Hello, I'm new to the forum. I have researched like crazy which is why I have ordered the parts I have, But I am still left with a few questions. I bought my car pretty much stock, It has a 3" Downpipe back exhaust and a cone intake.

What I have ordered (still in the mail):

Garrett big T28
FP race manifold/ all hardware including the 2 evo bolts
1g "style" bov
mbc
recirc intake
"cxracing" hardpipe kit for the smic
boost guage

This is not a track car, nor really a DD more of an evening grocery getter/ weekend warrior.

My question is, I followed the build path but it gets fuzzy at the end. It says you can run a 16g/t28 with the factory sidemount. (as far as cfm) While others say you can't. Anyone have personal experience?

It also says the factory 2g fuel system can handle up to 16psi but that's its limit And its a good idea to upgrade. Now, is that the limit on the factory t25? Or with the upgraded 16g/T28?
 
I am a big T28 fan (pun).

In my experience, you will be just fine upgrading to an SMIC (assuming you can find one) if you plan to keep the turbo below 20 psi. If have run this setup on more than one DSM with little issue with heat soak to include open track days (road course). On a rewired fuel pump, you can safely run this at 15 psi. This can be achieved on the OEM solenoid by removing the restrictor. The T28 will safely peak at 15 psi, then settle to 13-14 psi to redline with upgraded exhaust (o3 housing, downpipe, etc.)ECM. If you are open to suggestions, see below:

  • wide-band AFR ( This is a must for logging/monitoring purposes)
  • SS oil feed line with appropriate restrictor.
  • fuel pump rewire kit.
  • Tuning solution
    • ECM Link by far the best setup.
      • Logging features
      • narrowband simulation should you not trust the built-in wideband capable units.
      • proper tuning
      • trouble-shooting/diagnostic purposes
    • ECU-Flash/EVO Scan
      • more economical
      • not as user friendly
      • Many of the same features
    • Apex-i S-AFC
      • Cheapest solution
      • Easy to set up
      • adequate for your *current* needs
Some personal suggestions I would recommend:
  • Evo 8/9 fuel pump
  • Evo 8/9 550cc fuel injectors
  • Evo MR metal bypass valve (if you are still on OEM UICP)
  • Use OEM bolts/nuts where you can. ARP stuff sucks for this application
  • Good quality nickel-based anti-seize or assembly
  • Evo 3 o2 housing (must modify downpipe)
 
Thank you for the response, This is why I asked.. I have seen a write-up on the rewire and will at very least be doing that. I will see about sourcing an evo pump. I did get the hardpipe kit that includes the UICP. I also today ordered an aftermarket o2 housing. So at this point there is no restrictions. A wideband is on the list, Probably going the AEM route since its tried and true. As far as the hardware, like i said I payed the extra $$ through forced performance to get all new with the mani. And I was planning on running around the 14 psi mark. I had a SAFC2 in one of my SR 240's, But am intrigued by the link.

At 16 pound the injector were max out to 110% replaced them.
At 18 pounds it heat soak got a front mouth.
Ran that turbo at 27s pound and was fine till I spun a bearing but that was a bearing problem only.
But 1st gear spun tires while 2rd spun tires around 3rd it caught.

If you go with ECMLink, the AEM tends not to play nice. There are much better options. AEM is just a popular brand. Innovate would likely be your "tried n true" for this platform. At 14 psi only, you will be fine with just a fuel pump rewire assuming all other fuel components are functioning properly.

Not sure if cams were a great pairing for a T28 setup, but to each their own. On the heat soak, are you trying to say you soaked a stock side-mount, or soaked a FMIC. The OP is considering a larger side-mount. At 14 psi, the OEM side-mount would suffice.

Will be looking into innovate as well. I know I have heard of them before. And yes as far as the smic stock or not, I am really questioning its limits with the big t28. @ ~14psi It sounds like it should be adequate, as i stated its not going to be driven overly hard/ tracked. I have heard of people (on this forum if i'm not mistaken) who have ran mk4 smic. But if it is not necessary that's money that can be focused elsewhere. Thank you guys again for the responses, it really has been helpful. I'm still in the process of ordering parts, and all input is greatly appreciated.

If you choose to search for an aftermarket one, I would focus on better aftermarket such as AFDX, Hahn, Alamo, or Dejon as opposed to the Supra SMIC. The Supra does not fit well and it hangs too low for my comfort. You will also want to make your own ducting modifications to account for the extra surface area for air to flow.

I've ran my Aem O2 for years no problems so far good luck the t28 is a fun lil turbo

Good to know. Do you by chance have any vids posted of your setup? There really isn't alot out there on the t28
 
Could always have a water injection system for the track when you go, and just not fill it when you're daily driving. Personally, if I was to run the stock SMIC, clean the heck out of it first. Most likely it's gunked up with oil and that won't help things. Quick way of doing that is with fuel but there are other ways too. Also, if using stock SMIC, make sure to "repair" the fins; as in, straighten them out as much as possible (can be done with some time and two flat head screw drivers). The more are bent, the less air is going through it which again decreases its efficiency.
 
I will be cleaning and straightening then. My hardpipe kit came in today, Ill do it when I go to install all that. I will post when everything is up and running. Get a few pics etc.

Awesome, thanks man. I have actually seen the first video, watched it a few times on youtube haha. Can't wait, Everything is here except the FP manifold. It should be delivered by the first of the week.

Any recommendation on the oil restrictor setup? I have read that on a few DSM pages now. Im not 100% familiar with this. I have ran a t28 on an Sr20 before with no restrictor that I know of. But that's apples and oranges as oil pressure and source changes from one to the other.

If you are running an SS oil feed line from the OFH, you would want to consider something in the .70-.75 range. The last T28 I ran was with a .70 restrictor. I believe that was also suggested by Jusmx141 as well.
 
They're intended to be fed using the OEM TB2566 hard line which has a .070" restrictor in the adapter which threads into the filter housing.

If you're using an aftermarket feed line, be sure to use a restrictor of around the same size and you'll be fine.
 
Right on, so if i were to run the SS setup I need the restrictor but if factory lines are used (for now).. It is built in? Just want to be 100%, everything is here except the wideband. Not in a hurry on this small build. I want to make sure everything is setup proper. That being said, is there an advantage to the SS feed line? If so, maybe a link to purchase what is needed? Thanks again
 
Correct.

If you replace the OEM feed line with an aftermarket model and don't use a restrictor of the same size, it might be OK....or it might dump copious amounts of oil into the exhaust system. :p
