Hey guys. I have a mhi big 16g turbo that needs to be rebuilt. I'm looking for a reputable vendor to buy the kit from. I want to support our vendors and not buy some crap kit off ebay. Any suggestions on which of our vendors well have the kit and which ones all hold up. Thanks

Im more into doing things myself. Not just to save money but because I enjoy working on my car. Which is good since I have an addiction to dsm's ROFL

it depends Whats wrong with your 16g... I just recently rebuilt my 14B and a small 16G, the oil seals were in need of replacement on both, and they still spooled, and both had no evidence of compressor or turbine housing contact, it was not as hard as I thought, but you need to have all the tools to do the job right.

And it's critical to make sure that there's no damage to the compressor wheel, or the turbine shaft/wheel, if they are in good health, you should be able to rebuild it yourself, just do some research on how to rebuild an mhi turbo [lots of hits online], but honestly, it's almost not worth it to have someone else rebuild it... I mean considering you could put that money towards a better brand new turbo.

Mine has some shaft play and seals are blown, I just bought the car in Feb. The previous owner put the turbo and some other stuff on the car. I wish they hadn't touched any thing, so far I have fixed every thing they touched. The oil feed is coming off the ofh with out a restrictor. I'm going to be changing to off the head after I rebuild. Any ways I do plan to rebuild myself. I'm in no way new to cars or dsm's or turbos. Just want find a decent rebuild kit. Money isn't a issues just quality.

Looks like trader greg has some great reviews. And price is reasonable. Thanks Mitsubishikid. I think I will be going with trader greg.

are you guys sending your turbos out for balancing after you rebuild? or are you just not worrying about it?

It won't hurt to have a shop balance it, but as long as you carefully mark the compressor wheel, and the shaft, you should be okay.

On a more expensive turbo I'd say get it balanced, the mhi 20g and under I think you should be okay, so long as you keep a close eye on the marks, and torque specs when assembling it.

Good info, but also, all mhi pieces are component balanced from the factory. This isn't perfect, but many have rebuilt their turbos with stock parts and no balancing with zero I'll effects (myself included).

Balancing for an mhi would be in an extreme duty case imo. Or if you swap to a non-mhi part, or if said part hasn't been component balanced. Vsr balancing is fairly spendy, but can be nice piece of mind if you have dropped some coin on a billet wheel or upgraded turbine, and in some cases can mean the make or break a turbo build/rebuild.

Past that, tradergreg has a great rep and quality parts, go for it!

Yeah I just rebuilt my 14b recently, and I ported my exhaust housing and the manifold too, I installed it, have not had a chance to run it on the street yet, but so far not bad,

Another Tip [I did this] : rotate the engine a few times with the fuel and spark cut so you can get the oil to the turbo before you start the car, and don't go rev happy with it, let the car idle for a few minutes to help get the oil circulated, and the temps up after normal operating temps are there check for leaks around the turbo water lines and the oil lines etc.

I used royal purple assembly lube on the turbo journal bearings when I assembled mine, it worked really good, and all said and done it stuck to the surfaces without making too much of a mess.

I essentially did the same as you mitsubishikid for my 14b, down to the porting and whatnot. I used a high zinc assembly lube, pretty HD, didn't end up cranking the motor before start at all, just fired it and watch my oil pressure gauge.

So far all is well and the turbo spools quick with zero shaft play, and boosts well.

I think cleanliness and lube are the biggest issues with rebuilds, save decent components

I can vouch for the trader greg kit I purchased one myself for a old fp 18g turbo and it worked great after I rebuilt it. Still running strong on a mitsubishi starion at 15+ psi. Also you don't have to have a MHI turbo balanced each part is individually balanced. But all he is doing is installing the rebuild kit which will have no change on the current balance.
