Anyone running a dog box from tmz? Seems to be a affordable option but I can't seem to find much for reviews on them. Also, how good are the rear ends in these cars? Anyone weld them? I'm going to run a welded front diff so I don't see why I won't weld the rear as well. Also, What are your thoughts on the transfer case for strengthening

Magnus 300m or the t-case cover is all I know that does anything for the T-case. I'm sure TMZ or TRE probably has something too. You could swap in a 3000GT rear end if you have the time and skills.

Thanks for the feed back, hoping to run low tens high 9s on slicks. I'm thinking it will be in the 800whp range but we will see I haven't settled on a turbo yet.

I'll start posting pics soon as I get it in the shop and torn apart.

The Red Demon doesn'f run a 3000gt rear diff. Get the Front Line Fab rear diff cover the 300m trans parts and a PPG dog box. But I have toask how much WHP is the guy putting down?
Ppg dog box is almost 3 grand more, is it that much better or would I be paying for the name?

Hes not running a stock rear diff either. His build says "bp built rear diff with spool" who knows what he did to it but it isnt stock.

I would look in to get Evo LSD guts. And go tht route. And 800 whp is a low 9 sec car with the right set up and driver. I need to up date my build thread to night. But Im going with a goal well above you whp wise.

To be honest those numbers are my guess, I had a 91 tsi years ago that I always liked, I'm starting a new build and wanted to get back in a dsm. I picked up a 96 gsx which I'm gutting to the bone. I'd like to keep the glass but other then that full drag car. I want a drive line I don't have to worry about, I looked at the ppg trans but couldn't find anything saying that they are any better then the tmz boxes to justify 3g more they cost,

According to the website, to handle the 800whp or so you want to throw at it, you have to spend another $500. So you're up to 4 grand. That doesn't sound to bad to me. Also keeping the weight down and launching and shifting properly will help or you could go auto.

4K vs. the 7k for a ppg box

I'm not sure if guys read the TMZ website but the TMZ dogbox is HD stock gears that are liberty faceplated, they are not straight cut gears. When people refer to dogbox transmissions they are referring to the engagement of the gears. Synchromesh transmissions uses brass or carbon synchros and dogbox transmissions use large "dog" teeth engagement for switching gears faster. Dogbox has nothing to do with how the gears are cut.

if you want to know more about the difference of the two, check the link.

I understand the difference. The website says new gears that are face plated. It does not specify if they are straight cut gears or not, something I will find out when I get the tranny pulled and ready to ship out. Are you saying the price difference is the helical gears versus the straight cut?

Faceplating is supposed replace the sliding hub, which is also the weak point.
The weaker hubs are in the 92.5+ transmissions. They use a larger synchro to shift better, but the hub/sleeve are thinner and shatter.

I've never had a hub or sleeve break, but I've ripped the teeth off of the gears several times.

My stage 5's are based on DSM 91-early 92 3/4 gears, Evo 3 input shaft and 1st gear are discontinued now. If you want a great price on a 2g ppg trans currently, Mike wohler is selling his dogbox that has an open front, spool center, 1/2/3/4 gearset and shep steel 1/2 and 3/4 forks.

The faceplated transmissions still use stock DSM gears, so they'll be the weakest link. Driveline survivability relies heavily (no pun intended) on the weight of the car. I run a faceplated transmission, albeit not built by TMZ, and it has worked real well for me. I also have a really light car, so I haven't been blowing drivetrain parts as frequently as some folks, though.
