I currently run Prepared AWD in my 2g. This 1g is to be more competitive. I have held my own in the 2g as I am usually the only non-Subaru car in my class. This 1g will be driven hard. At the moment, budget is my key consideration as there will now be two cars for competition that eat up money. There is much less drive-train maintenance going fwd. This is more of a strategic move to be competitive as my girlfriend is showing interest in participating as well. The 2g will move strictly to street competition. I am very excited about having a dedicated car for Rally cross even if it is FWD. It should be a very competitive car in PF. All of my current rally wheels/tires will swap right over as well!

Biggest thing right now is getting all of the maintenance up to par. The car is very clean, but poor shape mechanically. I have a fresh motor nearly ready to drop in. The motor and trans-axle are currently out of the car. I need to replace the power steering rack and figure out suspension for this car. I am debating on rally-spec coil-overs, or Evo Bilsteins up front with GC/AGX in the rear.

I have nearly finished my build of a 1990 GSX for Prepared AWD. I'd really recommend the FEAL rally spec coil overs. Performance-wise, they've been great. The only issue is that they don't have an integrated mount for the brake lines, so you have to make something up. A stiffer rear sway bar helped a huge amount with being able to initiate lift-off oversteer, too.

I've also got a couple of random 1990 specific parts laying around - shift cables, ECU, and cam angle sensor. Let me know if you need something.

I have been looking at the FEAL setup with good reviews. I have narrowed it down to that or the Bilstein/AGX combo. Brake line fitment will be creative with either suspension choice. I made the same choice upgrading my rear bar on my 2g with the same results.

Really looking forward to the start of this years Rally Cross season in the DC area. Always wanted to rally, best of luck with your build.

Rally cross is a lot of fun. I have completed my first full season and have learned quite a bit. Power is not as big a factor as suspension and tires. My region started the new season in January. I am hoping to transition to the Laser in June.

I don't have good tires or suspension to start with, so 'm just in it for fun. I have KYB/AGX and the car I bought came with brand new all season tires on the rims I planned to use for Rally X, so I don't want to pull them for a set of better M/S tires just yet. Then again, I want new rims now that I completed 3KGT VR4 brake upgrade and had to use spacers.

Feel free to send questions or want advice my way. I have caught the rally bug.

Some recent updates.

Power train is out. I was able to get the car to run, but poorly. Here is what I found to likely be the issue:

Also picked up an LSD:

Nice buy, looks like you are going to make it pretty solid. I might have a 1G ECU around here if that is fried... I will check. I am interested in what you find about the Feal coilovers. When I talked to them last month, they said they don't make them for the 1G anymore, so hopefully they still will make them... Here was their reply to me...
Hi Peter,
We have actually decided to only build rally kits for Subaru and Mitsubishi EVO models.
We can only provide a street/track kit for the DSM platform.
Thanks,
Aurimas Bakchis, “Odi”

Let me know what you discover, I am interested in moving away from the DMS50mm that I have, but have found very limited Rally options!

I would look into the MAP upgrade, over the MAF, it made tuning easier for me, if you go that route.

I would love to go with DMS, but I think that would be a bit out of my budget at this time. I have an ecu on the way, but hope to find in the budget some funds for DSMLink. I have to keep the stock sensors for my class unfortunately.

No updates in a while,so here we go.
The motor is just about ready to mate to the trans. Just waiting on a few odds and ends that I would like to take care of in the engine bay before the motor and trans are in.

Of course, there are those fun things you encounter. Such as a snapped bolt for the front cross member. After completing the repair, the area was repainted to prevent rusting.

Heli Coil to the rescue:

Got the exhaust installed. Impressed with the fitment!

These dollies are the best tool purchase I have made in a while!

:hellyeah: going to be attending any winter cross events ??

Our region holds rally cross events 11 months out of the year. I also do a couple ice rally cross events in Jan/Feb as well. I plan to retire my 2g from off-road events so I can properly set it up for road courses when this car is ready.

I just got a FEAL rallyX setup. Car broke down at the event last weekend so I can't say much about their offroad performance, but they feel good on the highway. The brake lines aren't too bad. The rear comes with a bracket that you can mount the lines with one of those pressure clips. The front has a hard mount for the same thing, you just have to take note of the position and make sure you install the coilovers with that mount facing forward. You then have to get a line coupler (double male fitting not sure the proper term) to go in between the two flex lines or rebend the stock hard line to go from the caliper to the mounting point on the coilover. I should have pictures up next week once I get some time.

For the time being, I have a set of GR2s that are going to be used while I have the front Bilstein HDs revalved/rebuilt. Unfortunately coil-overs are not in the budget for this year. Unfortunately, being a fwd 1g yields minimal results for suspension choices.

Good looking Laser! What year of build is yours? Mine is June of 1989. And nice wheels - must have came off of a Chrysler Minivan. I plan on getting mine looking as good as yours. Thx and good luck!

Thank you for the kind words. To be honest, I have not looked into the build date. I suppose I will have to when I search for rear brake calipers. I bought this car specifically to compete in rally cross. I wanted a rust free shell. There was a bit of a learning curve on this 90 as I am more of a 2g guy.
Yes, the rims came from a Chrysler minivan.
Unfortunately, the build is on hold while I complete my Master's program at the moment. I may have some time around the holidays. I am really looking forward to beating on this car!
