Wrapping interior pieces

I've seen threads and posts about painting the grey parts of the console black. I've also seen multiple people suggest wrapping in some material. In all my research I've never seen anyone actually go through with wrapping their pieces. I just think it'd be more durable than paint. I'm just wondering has it been done? What did you use? How does it look? and how well is it holding up?

Not to hijack your thread, maybe it'll add insight, but if anyone has ever used PlastiDip with permanent primer on interior parts. Its supposed to be pretty durable with the permanent primer stuff.

I've read about Plastidip, Krylon, and SEM and I have no doubt that they would be durable but I was just wondering about the wrap just so I'm confident I'm choosing the best way to color my interior. Just exploring my options

I wrapped my center console lid with leather. Pretty simple since it isn't a complex shape. I made it with three pieces of leather, sewed it together, folded underneath the lid, and sewed it on by hand. Basically under the plastic inside the lid it is a spider web holding the leather on.
Now how to go about doing the larger interior plastic parts I would think glue would be the number one thing holding the fabric on. Several people have redone things like headliners, door inserts, sun visors, trunk liner, trunk privacy cover, etc. You could look up people in those threads and pm them. Maybe they will see this and throw some comments as well. So doing my part to the top!

Excuse me. But just to add my .02 plasti dip is cheap, great ect. ect. ect. At the end of the day when its all said and done it will peel off by itself regardless if its metal, plastic or rubber.
It is only a matter of time.

That's what worries me about painting

Did you use the permanent primer? I've heard it doesn't come off that easily when done properly.

Sorry, not fixated on this stuff, I just like the texture and I want to treat my interior, but not find out the hard way.


As far as wraps go, I would definetately go with faux suede and follow 2slow4now advice

Make no mistake the dip looks sick. And if you baby it well you may get lucky on longevity. Yeah i used primer, you may have better luck, as far as wrap i lost my F*ING mind trying that on interior pieces so i gave up on all of that and decided to have a clean stock look.

Ok so wrapping=really hard thanks for the tip. I'll probably go with krylon or sem

I just got some thin leather out of the scrap pile at a leather shop that I liked. Just a black cowhide that I think was only 1/16" thick or around there. I think they call it 4 ounce. From what the leather guy said 1 ounce is about 1/64th of an inch.

Not a good pic but I'm at work and it was the only one I could find.

That looks REALLY good almost OEM. I might pull a few interior pieces and try to wrap them but in the meantime I'll probably just paint. Thanks for the info though

No problem. Have you checked out Jaxness's profile pics? She did a pink plaid on a bunch of her interior. A couple other guys did too. Uhm well not pink but they did the same wrapping.

You might be able to get away with glue if you use a thin leather that will form to the curves of the big plastic pieces. I thought about it but the cost would be high, very labor intensive, and even doing this little lid I had to get creative with fastening it. I think if I did the entire interior (covering the plastic with leather) I would have stitch lines in specific spots and actually sew the leather at the stitches to the plastic instead of just relying on glue alone. I wonder how many hours that would take?

I'm with you on the paint and try to wrap some little stuff. Start small and see how it goes is a good plan.

Have you looked into Hydrographics/hydro dipping? It's pretty durable stuff. I guess it's up to you on what type of feel you want (cloth vs. smooth surface). Example done on an Evo gauge cluster -

Cloth is one thing wrap is another, i love what Jax did, that is what inspired me to execute this move, i bought $ 20.00 in fabric/leather. And redid my headliner with a mean stock/sexy look and even stitched my own shifter boot.

I re-did most of my interior black. Just missing a few things I decided to not do. For the panels I used Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric spray. It's a dye that works great. I sprayed the cloth door inserts and carpet with it and also used it for the plastic panels. Looks great! I only have a few pics to show. Also, I didn't use adhesion promoter or sand paper or anything that I should have to make the dye stick. I just wiped it down with alcohol and sprayed. With proper preparation it could look even better. Nothing has scratched though, other than a couple scratches from forcing in a table into my hatch (quick fix).

For my silver gauge bezel I used Plsatidip to black it out and give it that textured look I was looking for. I even painted over the high beam and turn signal inserts. They still show through, but hard to see during the day in sunlight.

Its been great no issues. Just if u decided to use krylan. It dryies super fast. My first attempt on my dash cracked everywhere over night. Trick is once u lay your final coat of color clear it instantly. And as long as u prep your serface realy good. You wont have any problems.

Jusst let it all dry n cure for a few days n gas out before u install or touch it
