Awesome find, Jose!

How is it that I never heard of these cars before? How many did they make? Are any of them still in existence?

Leon, not sure how many we're produced. The above pictured one I attached that is not from the magazine was one I found for sale. It was in the Japanese version of an auto trader. A lot of the cars ended up in privateer garages. You still see them show up to open wheel events. The last one I saw was 2 years ago at one of the Idler's events.

On a side note when mitsu decided to go with the 2liter 4G they knew they had something special so they really tried to push it out to everyone and get it noticed. The Formula Mirage series was just one of those pieces. It was a full blown point series program with something like a $200,000 purse for the series champion. So that enticed some notable racers to commit to the series. Keiichi Tsuchiya was the 1st years champion(1990). Better known to the the younger crowd as the drift king and of Option, Best Motoring and D1 fame. It's demise was F3 had just started and the Formula Honda And Formula Toyota series got a better foothold and enjoyed greater popularity.

There were other 4G series Mitsu tried to get rolling but they never took off past one or two series. I'll post those as I unbox them.

Sorry for the length, but I know some of you enjoy the history.

Later
Jose

Just did a quick search on the web and found some recent pics.

1.Some guys who have the formula mirage and still race it, in the one pic with the red car the formula mirage is actually the white one in the background with "3FOX" on it.

2. Looks like one is sitting in the HKS museum.

finally scanned some new 4G63 goodness for the thread.

From the Mitsubishi 1989 new cars catalog:

The Mitsubishi Galant HSR is the first page.
Because it was the rolling laboratory which developed the 2.0 4G63.
Also whose technology went into the Galant and Eclipse.

In 1987 this 4G63 powered Concept car generated 295hp and went 330kph.
This speed was in large due to the incredible aero and low drag coef.
You can see from the photo how the 4G63 is angled to achieve a lower profile.

I will scan more in as I continue to unpack.

Mitsubishi continuing to try to capatilize on the success of the 4G63 Mirage series and the recently created Formula Mirage series went a step further and tried its hand at the international stage and introduced the Eclipse Macau Grand Prix.

Cars where all FF (Front wheel drive)
all spec in at 230 hp
all had to use Work Equip 5 spoke wheels (16" x 7")
all had to use Yokohama tires (A008R, 225/50ZR16)

ArcticTsi, those pics of the Macau Grand Prix are amazing! I especially love the one where they're all on the track at the same time... Wow! So sweet! OMG All of their front bumpers were the ones with the extra lower lip like the one I have on my car in my avatar picture. ;) Those are so hard to find now, but just look at them all back then... Man! (shaking head)

Glad you like, here is another one with a closeup of one of the cars and you can see the details a little better. It is awesome that these were all factory built racers. A few years after the Grand Prix a few of the cars made it back to the states for some racing schools. Sorry for always adding my commentary.

Anyway, Ad for the 3-piece Work Equip 5-spoke wheel all the cars had to run for the event.

Just got this mag in the mail. Notice the front and back mud guards and the vent visors.

^ my exact car but it's black LOL

I absolutely love the constant cheap shots at honda. So funny.

DSMBanditFZ6 - Do you mind editing your post. Your quote has twenty pages attached to it. If all twenty pages are relevant then no big deal.

Nice, the window vents are still so popular in Japan. Also, the turn indicators on the side of the front fenders are market specific. In Japan you have to be able to see the turn indicator on all for sides.

Another piece for the thread. Ad for the Russell Racing School: Sedan Techniques of Driving Course (TDC). I believe this is from 92' or 93'. They utilized some of the the Macau Grand Prix Eclipses.

Makes sense. Uncluttered for your convenience. ;)

Much appreciated :thumb:

Another article on the Macau Grand Prix Eclipses.

1. Caption under the large photo of the car basically reads:
And the car looked cool on the track.

2. Hatch photo reads:
The trunkroom is filled with the gas tank

3. Seat photo reads:
Full bucket racing seat with Britax 4 point full harness

4. Rollcage pic:
Complete 6 point rollbar installed. With special attention to provide head clearance.

Funny how they did "6 point roll bar". The front 2 points are very different from what we do in US :). "Attention for head" was a bump out in bar. Another thing that US tech inspectors do not like.

What year what this?

1989. I believe in one of the articles it stated 20 were produced. Which could be legit seeing how in some of the photos I have seen 15 - 17 at one time on the course.

Couple more scans.

1st photo is poor quality, but shows a lot of the cars on the course

2nd photo shows a few more points of the car.
through out the article they keep stating how the car is running its normal horsepower. The only power adder they say is on the car is a straight pipe which bumped up the car to 230ps.

Gotta show the lasers some love. Have this old ad from June of 91'.
Since people did not know what the Laser was, if you look at the bottom of the ad it says, "Same as Mitsubishi Eclipse"

But you can see how much bang for the buck you got with car compared to the prices of the other performance cars of the day. Before I test drove and bought my 91' Talon, I test drove the same 91' 300ZX Twin Turbo advertised as well as a 90' Corvette ZR1. Needless to say the Talon blew me away with its performance and price.

Both concept cars actually not far off, especially the 1g. Impressive.

The Macau cars were sweet. I knew Russell's Eclipses were those...

I also always wondered if some of the cars that made it over to Wolin's camp were also Macau cars. Seeing how he was in bed with Ralliart at the time.

I need a VHS to MPEG solution. I have old Option,Best Motoring and other tapes I need to capture for the thread.
