This thread is for discussion of vented rear rotors unique to Early '95 AWD DSM's. Any info or questions specific to this topic are welcome, including swaps onto other DSM's. Part numbers are encouraged and will be added to the list once verified.

FAQ's:
What is an Early '95?
Early '95 is the name given to the group of AWD DSM's manufactured before November 1994. These cars came equipped with some rare parts such as Viscous LSD, EPROM ECU, and large vented rear rotors. While the VLSD and EPROM are nothing new to the DSM platform, rear brakes of such caliber aren't found on any other DSM.

Do I have an Early 95?
To determine if you have an Early 95, check the production date of your DSM. This can be found on the info plate located behind the battery, or the sticker located within the driver side door jamb. If your date of manufacture is before November 1994, then you have an Early 95.

Why doesn't my Early 95 have vented rear rotors?
It's not uncommon for people to purchase normal rear brakes, ignore the obvious size difference, and just install them anyways. It's best to pull a wheel off and inspect the brakes up close, then go get what you need.

Should I upgrade to the larger, vented rear brakes? What are the benefits and risks?
If your asking this question then I would strongly urge you to read up on Braking Bias. In a nut shell- You don't want more stopping power in the rear alone. As you brake more aggressively the vehicle's weight will shift forward onto the front wheels and off the back. The added weight in front gives those tires more traction while reducing weight and traction at the rear. More traction means more stopping force without locking up, and vice versa. Not to imply that it's wrong to upgrade the rears; Proper braking bias goes both ways. Just consider the warning.

Speaking from personal experience, the bias is all out of whack with stock 2-pot fronts and vented rears. It makes for some fun times on dirt and snow, but you have to be ready to fight the rear end during an emergency stop. It's not hard to see why Mitsu went right back to small/solid rotors. So upgraded front brakes are a requirement before even considering the rear.

What's the big deal?
Simply put, the Early 95 rear rotors are huge compared to normal 2g rotors. Their diameter is ~284mm versus the normal 265mm. They're also 20mm thick and vented, while normal 2g rear's are only 1/2 as thick and solid as a rock.

Absolutely. The install should be similar between all 2g DSM's (excluding RS, Base, and Spyder GS models which have rear drums).

The rear vented rotors came more on the Talon 95.
If you search for venting rotors on the eclipse, you will get a hard time to find them, But if you look for talon, boom, there it is.

The vented rotors came on virtually all 2g AWD DSM's produced before Nov 1994. Eclipse or Talon doesn't matter, most vendors just don't have a clue what they're selling. But your correct that searching for Talon parts will usually yield better results.

Thanks for making this thread Wes! I do have a question I'm pretty sure I know the answer to but I'd rather ask to be sure.

Would performance rotors (ie drilled and slotted) that would work for 95-99 work fine on the early 95's in terms of the rear rotors? I'm assuming they would but it's one of those things I haven't seen brought up and would like to know for sure.
 
Would they bolt up... Technically yes but the rotor is bigger as well as wider. So you could put the rotors on but you wouldn't be using the full pad and going through them fast then usual. If you want performance rotors for early 95's look at the link posted above

So the rotors listed at http://brakeperformance.com/brake-ro....php?did=10035 would be the best way to go if I were looking to replace the rears with drilled and slotted?
 
The rear vented rotors will bolt on, but it needs the wider calipers that came with the vented rotors., Otherwise you will not be able to bolt on the regular calipers.

Solid rotors goes with regular calipers and vented rotors goes with wider calipers.

Im sorry I should have mentioned this already. Im asking about my 95 talon which has the vented rear rotors.
 
So, I was looking at calipers and came across NAPA AUTO PARTS. It says that it comes with the bracket. Could one go with this and not worry about the bracket from Mitsubishi or are these totally different? If this would work it would save people some money anyway.
 
Not all early '95 came with EPROM. Mine didn't. It is September 1994. It has the Viscous LSD, and large vented rear rotors I am sure though.
 
It's my understanding that the calipers are indeed wider on the vented setup. I can't imagine the normal caliper functioning correctly with a rotor essentially twice as thick. So you'd essentially need to buy the caliper assembly + bracket to make this work.
 
I didn't want to be the first to point this out, so I waited until a few others mentioned it.

Somewhere near the top of this thread there is mention of the calipers and pads being the same for vented/solid rotor brake setups. This is not true.

If you've ever had everything (calipers, pads, rotors) side by side (as I have) you know that NONE of those components are interchangeable.

That's what I thought too. So the link I provided has the caliper+bracket for about $80 a side vs $69 for brackets from Mitsubishi. Seems like a win to me then!
 
The calipers are different, both dimensionally and hydraulically. The caliper body is wider to accommodate the vented rotor, plus it has a larger piston diameter compared to the solid rotor caliper.

The pads are also dimensionally different - you can fit solid rotor pads into vented rotor calipers, but vented rotor pads won't fit into solid rotor calipers.

Because of the larger diameter vented rotor and the larger piston, the proportioning valve has a substantially different profile.

Rock auto seems to carry them as well. One of the sets I've dug up is CARDONE Part # 18B4666 and 18B4667 for the calipers and brackets. $92 each "unloaded".

CENTRIC Part # 14246535 and 14246536 for loaded calipers. $105 each

Just wanted to put this out there as well for guys wanting more than just a plain white box rotor for the vented early 95's.

We have in the past ordered slotted rotors from Stoptech/Powerslot for customers willing to wait.
They take from anywhere from 30-60 days to get made. Any questions just PM or email me.

I have not been able to find the pads yet. They all look like the standard 95+ pads. Maybe someone may have better luck than I did. I saw the pads listed from rock auto 5 post up, but I figured if one could just go to NAPA, it would save a little on shipping and possibly get them next day if someone was worried about it.

These specs are from R1Concepts - OEM, Drilled & Slotted Brake Rotors - Brake Pads - Brake Calipers. They stock the brake parts. Only thing I found with the "blank" rotors from here was, the stock rubber plug that covers the parking brake adjustment hole was too small.

The pads:

The solid rear rotors use 383 pad (industry number) while the vented use a 532 pad. 91-93 3000gt vr4 use the same pad, so the aftermarket pads work with them, hps pad are hb673x.603.

The pads for the solid rotors will "fit" into the vented setup, but the piston is as wide if not wider then the backing plate for the pad. They will also not use the outer 1/4" or so of the rotor and wear at an angle (the pad). I'm not saying you can use them, just that if it fits doesn't mean it is the correct pad.

A 94 3000gt sl should have the same rear rotor aswell but I haven't been able to get specs to verify.

Here is a Vin that has rear vented brakes : 4e3al54f7se098823

The rear vented do work with FWD (unsure of heat/dust shield), just need to remember/ use FWD mounting bracket (the one that goes between the hub and knuckle)

Solid rear caliper piston is 34.8mm
Vented rear caliper piston is 38.1mm (I believe)

I have more info/links saved on another computer but I wont be able to access it for about a week. I'll update later if it hasn't been covered.

The pictures I posted are from my gst. I swapped the big rear onto. Pix show the diff between both. The last picture shows why you shouldn't use the small calipers and should use the true big brake calipers.
