Long time no see,

I used to have a 1997 Talon TSi AWD a few years ago with a 16g set-up that I was working on and unfortunately it had a run in with a deer that left it wrecked and me out a vehicle. I searched for a while and ended up with a MY04 Subaru WRX (that is a long story in itself full of long nights at the shop building an engine ROFL) that I ended up selling a few months ago to pay for school. I still checked the car ads religiously looking for DSM's and finally came across this one after almost 2 years of searching.

It's a 1998 Eagle Talon TSI AWD. It was completely stock minus a GFB BPV in place of the 2g bpv when purchased and has 95,000km (56K miles). Nearly no rust (just some surface rust on a few suspension components exhaust etc. Zero on strut towers and rocker panels. Black exterior with black and grey leather interior in mint condition minus a but of mud in the carpet. Even has a mint stock infinity stereo! The paint is in the usual black DSM condition missing clear coat.

Needless to say I am pleased with my find. :hellyeah:.

So some maintenance comes first, changing fluids, any worn components (brake pads, rotors, tie rod ends etc) and now that she is all up to speed it's time to start collecting some parts. Basically I'll be collecting throughout the summer and installing over the winter.

Goals with this set-up are high 11 second 1/4 mile in a full weight 2g along with being a fun (not built for class) autocross car. It is not my DD (have an Isuzu Rodeo for that LOL We will see where the world takes it though!

Thanks for reading, any comments or input is greatly appreciated! Pictures to come!

Congrats on the find. Should turn out really nice. What's up with the purple?

Second favorite color next to orange and purple black flows a bit better :).

Something different I guess. It will be this shade

Thanks for the kind words! Engine will be out of the car probably at the end of the month.

Pictures speak a thousand words! Here is some pics of the interior as I have it not black/grey. Will be black/tan soon. It's pretty much mint minus some dirt on the floor. I've also decided that it will be resprayed Subaru's Plasma Blue Silica Pearl. I've included a photo of an STi painted that color on the bottom.

i was like dafuq subaru? that's a nice dark blue. I want to paint mine the darker blue found on the newer mitsus

K&N FIPK

Personally, I think the FIPK is overpriced. I use this K&N filter and a MAF adapter. Bought the filter at AutoZone, got the adapter a long time ago so I don't recall the price but they are relatively cheap. -That setup was less than even 1/3 the price of the FIPK, but I also got a 30% discount on the normal price of the filter. Mine fits fine with the OEM accordion tube.

So I purchased a powdercoating setup and am picking up some more parts tommorow! Pictures again soon and I'll also post some pictures of some attempted home powdercoating.

Joel

More stuff! Including a test T bolt clamp I powdercoated. Pretty happy with it. Lots of practice ahead :).

Thanks Sirbow. I ordered another whack of parts so more photos will be up soon along with photos of the tan stuff I got. Build will commence on my week off coming up here after I finish getting the garage insulated and poly'd.

Can't wait for spring already. I'm also considering doing rods, pistons, head studs and cams and then going to E85. Depends how big I want to go I guess.

Joel

I think for your goals you might want to reconsider that ACT 2100 clutch, to get into 11's you'll be pushing its limits on a full weight car. It'd be a lot easier now to change it than when you find out it slips.

The general consensus is also that the OEM tob is better choice.

Thanks for your input jdnxc, it's definitely been one of the thoughts on my mind of whether or not to go to a 2600 or not but on paper the 2100 with the 6 puck should do what I need.

The car is mainly going to be used for autocross and street, not much drag and I wanted a lighter clutch. The 2100 with a 6 puck is rated to hold 415 tq while having a lighter/easier to work pedal and less stress on the crank (that being said, I have a revised split thrust bearing engine so I'm not that concerned about that in particular). I'll be at the top end of it's rating but like I said on paper it should work.

Who knows though, by the time the engine goes back in I may convince myself otherwise haha.

Joel

Ya if you don't do a lot of launches that config might do alright for you.

I guess I'm a little biased against ACT clutches, I've seen so many locals and elsewhere with issues, broken fingers on the PP's and stripped splines on the puck disks. But then again, some people swear by them.

Photos!

Here are some more parts I've picked up, HKS cams, FP intake and some misc items. Also more pictures of powdercoating. Practice, practice practice!

Engine should be out of the car next week. Still debating on building or sticking with the stock block though.

Don't forget to rewire that fuel pump!

Looking good!

Ah yes! Need to do that for sure :)

Also gotta relocate the battery to the trunk. I'll add that to the original post so I don't forget haha.

Snow is flying once again and that means one thing! So it begins! :rocks: Got the hood/headlights/bumper wiring harness all disconnected from the engine/trans and started removing the auto starter that was in it :barf:. Man is it nice having a vehicle with such little rust. Bolts come out sooo easy :)

Engine will be on the stand tomorrow.

I didn't take as many pictures I anticipated, I kinda just started rolling with it. Engine is out and on the stand now :) Up next is stripping the bay and painting it, then stripping the interior and painting the exterior. Fun fun.

Pictures for your viewing pleasure:

Been a few weeks now, got a bit more done. Extremepsi's black friday sale got me going a bit and I've now decided I'm doing a bit of a build on my engine... :)

Got Weisco pistons, Eagle rods, ACL bearings, ARP head studs and a few other goodies!

Onto photos! Could not believe how clean the inside of my head/valve cover was. Also since some of my other parts were so dirty, I started sandblasting/powdercoating them.

Also included is a fancy trick on removing your crank pulley without any special tools.

Long time no update,

I've been crazy busy with work/school over the last couple months so I have not gotten a whole lot done. I've started to remove the interior, got the engine to the machine shop which I should be picking up tomorrow. Turns out my crank is cracked so I'm on the hunt for a new one now.

I did get my turbo powder coated though. I really gotta start picking up my socks and getting on this otherwise it won't be ready in time for July.

Heres hoping but honestly it's not looking good :(.

On the plus side though, school has been fun ;).
