Well you never know... one of these days I might get back into what I like doing most with cars: playing with ECMLink and tuning them.

And I've just been reading the data from a guy in the States who's got a fairly similar setup as me, and having good success. He's running a HX-40 Pro on a built engine with the usual nice trimmings but stock intake manifold, but is only using 91 octane petrol. And he's doing a knock-free run at 30psi and making close to 600bhp according to his ECMLink figures (not good for a comparison I know, but still showing good power). Another good figure would be saying his 70-90mph times are about 1.15s and the turbo peaking at 65lbs/min of airflow.

What is interesting for me is looking at his timing maps, and seeing how much timing he's dropped compared to my map currently.

His timing map:

My timing map:
mytiming_zps6ab78b5e.gif

Now I know there are lots of factors involved, but it does look like I could still drop timing by a degree or 2 at the higher end of the rpm scale and pick up some more boost (running around 1.6-1.65 bar at the moment, or was the last time the car was fit for a 1/4 mile run). And knowing that the turbo is only starting to come alive, I'm wondering if sacrificing timing in favour of boost might net me some big gains in power.

I'll inevitably have another problem tomorrow with the car, putting tuning even further away, but it gives me something to think about.

My Christmas present for the car was a set of new shoes, in the form of some TE37 rims and Star Spec rubber. Just waiting for the new original decals to come through and they'll be put on too.

Those rims look sexy on your EVO, good choice!! Oh, btw, I consistently find myself in the same dilemma of whether to buy something of necessity or purchase something frivolous. Guess which one normally wins :hmm: Great build!

I second the sentiment about the wheels, I'm not a huge fan of white but those look the business:thumb: Now for another 1.5" moar low and you'll be killin' it:sneaky:

Is the guy you're comparing maps with running the same cams as you?

Any lower and the front bumper would be scraping on small kerbsides going in and out of parking. I love the HKS Kansai bumper to death but the front lip means I can't drop the car nearly as much as I would do otherwise.

go taller tires next time and drop her a bit more. but car is looking great Dave!

What do you guys think of these? Might be cool with the black & red theme inside the car. Or is original blue the way to go with white TE37s?

Hey, you mind putting the steering wheel/pedals on the left side of that beauty and sending it over to the states? I need an evo 3...... bad LOL

Serious, nice build thread and shes a beauty. Wheels look really good on it. But how long did it take to learn to shift with ## left hand? Ive always thought that would be tricky for awhile.

Thanks man. I'm in the lucky position though that being from England, I've always shifted with my left hand! Not sure how I'd do with my right though!

As for getting an early Evo in the States, there are a handful of them, but it's not easy to do. I do know of one guy who did pretty much a complete swap from a Mirage to an early Evo by buying parts and putting it together.

Realised the reason my car has had so many problems over the past 12 months isn't because of me trying to be cheap or not having JDM mad tyte skillz, but actually not having the right charm in my car. Sorted that out today with a visit to one of the big shrines in Okinawa, and prayed for a good year to come.

Let me know if you want one for the new year!

And the rims are almost finished with the Rays Time Attack decals on them. I know alignment of the stickers may not be 100% perfect but neither is the rest of the car! It certainly transforms the look, and I think in a good way.

And yes, the rims need a clean but I have to wait for a week for the adhesive to set really good before that.

Well my LEDs came in today so I pulled the cluster out and fitted them. Have to say I'm pretty pleased. There are a couple of darker spots, but you pretty much always are gonna get them unless you customize a whole ring of LEDs around the cluster.

Also did the licence plate too. Am thinking about maybe looking at getting LED for the brake light or reverse light, or even side lights at the front, but am not sure if the directional nature of LEDs will mean it's not so good for them.

Not so much a big update as an observation. I found out the car doesn't like being driven through about 1km of 6-8" high water coming down the road like a river! I know, it's hardly a revelation, but was certainly an interesting experience. Driving home from work and the rain was torrential, even in a very wet rainy season we're in now. As I was driving up this hill though the water was just getting deeper and the car in front annoyingly was getting slower. Bizarre as everyone knows the best way to make it through standing water is to floor it and not go slower.

Then the wipers started to slow a little and the lights dim a tad and I thought... well, not good things. Managed to get off the road and into a parking area (pretty lucky there was an opening as my windshield was fogged up and the lights not too bright so it was an educated guess that I wasn't going to hit a 6" high kerb). Just as I parked up the battery light came on. Turned all electrics off apart from the engine and it recovered fine after a few seconds of idling so it must have just caused a short at the alternator or in the battery line running under the car.

Saw a Prius make it up the hill and thought, "Awww, hell no!". Got to the end of the taxi parking lot and damn near launched it out of there past the river and onto marginally drier land! Car was fine after that so just needs drying out a little I think. Don't want to do that again any time soon though.

Riddle me this,
Riddle me that,
What in the name of all things sacred,
Would cause my fan to go splat?

Noticed my temps about 3-4 degrees higher than normal a couple of days ago. Not a huge amount, especially with temperatures soaring now summer has hit, but enough to make me have a look into the engine bay. And what do I find but this!

The gaps in the shroud I cut open to inspect, but all bar 3 blades have been broken off at the centre. Now I refuse to believe that those little Chinese children working 48 hour factory shifts would make something shoddy, but god knows what has caused it. There are no marks on the radiator from where it could have hit. There are no marks on the inside of the fan shroud from where there could have been contact there. It just seems like the fan decided summer was coming and it was time to pack in.

I'm driveable for the moment with temps just a little higher, but need to get another fan on order ASAP.

Dave, I hadn't been on this site in 6 months. I was reading through page 5 and 6, catching up. I thought to myself, nice, Dave's car is doing well for a change! And then your fan splodes and your alternator shorts. You have so much luck with that car man, LOL. Glad to see you are updating your build thread going forward though. That car deserves it. :thumb:

Thanks man. Thread needs to be retitled: soldave's 1001 ways his early Evo tries to kill itself!

LOL that would work, i would imagine that maybe one fan blade broke off and that cause the others to break, was it old? maybe the blades just got brittle?

Not really. About 18 months old, and even Chinese-made Ebay fans I've used in the past have lasted longer than that.

Reckon that water could definitely have been a factor though, looking back.

well not sure what brand that one was but I have been running Spal fans for years and never seen that happen, i had a pair of spal fans that were on a car I bought and they lasted for over 10 years between me the the previous owner. the bearings went on one and the other just quit working the motor went on it

Well it never rains but it pours with this car. Got a replacement fan on order but am ok driving around with one so far. However, I've not been doing much driving at all as about 10 days ago when driving I was hearing a squeaking noise at a certain rpm (around 1750) near the timing belt area. Got home and inspected it and the 4-5 year old OEM crank pulley wasn't looking in the best of shape. Seems like the Okinawan elements were claiming another victim. Decided that with the engine internals an upgrade wouldn't go amiss, so got a Fluidampr on order.

It arrived today and I've just come up from fitting it. Glad I've not been driving around while it's been squeaking, after taking a look at it when I pulled it off.

Threw on the Fluidampr and things seem a lot smoother with the car on idle now. Might just be a placebo effect and me trying to think there's a difference, but I'm sure it's a lot better than the old stock one.

So that's another bullet dodged and my new fan should be in in a week or so. Then it's counting down to August 25th and the first and only drags of the year. This time they're on another island about an hour away by ferry and will be a 200m or 300m run on a disused airstrip. Somewhere new and we can make a weekend of it, so providing there are no typhoons in the area that weekend it should be a great couple of days. Need to do a spot of tuning before then though - see how close I can get to 2bar :)

Wouldn't normally throw in car washes pics into my build thread, but it's all for a good cause. The Black Onyx Pacesetters Motorcycle Club - Okinawa Chapter, in conjunction with The Kandi Girls, put on a charity bike and car wash today, with all proceeds going to one of the orphanages in Okinawa. The Evo was only washed last week but was in bad need of a clean after the typhoon that skimmed us had covered the car in salt and dust from the nearby baseball ground.

Credit to the guys and ladies who did the car wash - was about 34C and 90% humidity out there - was scorching stood in the shade so am guessing there's going to be some sunburnt bodies tonight. Would have stayed longer but the girlfriend was overheating so apologies for so few pics. I'll go on my own next time and snap more pics! The Scooby's my good buddy's and is a very nice and clean little ride. Doesn't currently go in reverse, but he's decided he doesn't need it.

I miss Oki. I was there from 2009-2012 drove an EVO IV ,miss it everyday.

Transcontinental move in the next couple of months back to the motherland means the car has to go, and with the car market being like it is where I am, I'd lose a biblical amount of money if I tried to sell it whole.

Got to price things up over the weekend and work a few things out before a full for sale thread goes up. I did forget I've not got a spec list on the front page of my build. OK, heres a very quick rundown of what will be available:
-Mahle pistons (I think oversized as it's a 2.1L - will confirm)
-Scat rods
-Eagle 4340 crank
-fully ported head by Motorworx Engineering, with stainless valves, FP springs and retainers
-Ported oil filter housing to drop oil pressure under high boost
-Throttle body half shafts removed and ported intake manifold
-custom 70 MM intercooler piping (giving me a total piping length of under 1m)
-Treadstone Vertical flow intercooler with fabricated mounts
-Stock Evo III intake manifold
-JM Fabrications VR-4 top-mount exhaust manifold
-JM Fabrications exhaust manifold spacer
-Holset HX-40 with a .84 Garrett exhaust housing
-Twin 38mm XS Power wastegates (now using Tial 1bar springs and TIAL diaphragms) and external dumps
-Synapse Engineering Synchronic BOV
-custom 4" intake with Blitz stainless SUS filter
-custom 3" downpipe, and 3" exhaust, with Blitz muffler, and Apexi mechanical valve
-OS Giken STR2C clutch
-stock 1.5 way plate diff
-Left and right Ralliart motor mounts (with brackets)
-walboro 255 fuel pump
-850CC fuel injector clinic injectors
-Sard Fuel pressure regulator
-Winner Racing custom-sized aluminium radiator to fit where a/c condensor block sat
-Cusco Coilovers
-FreakyParts' Willwood kit (including rotors, Ferodo pads and brake lines)
-17" TE37 rims (genuine, with Rays valve stems)
-HKS Kansai front bumper (I'll clean cut it into 2 and send it, if you want it! Get a bodyshop to put the 2 pieces back together and call it a day :) )
-Integral knock meter
-ECMLink
-AEM Uego wideband
-Blitz Dual Spec SBC-iD plus Power Meter (in custom-modified centre console)
-Billion Variable Fan Controller (works... kind of!)
-Sabelt harnesses
-Fluidampr harmonic damper
-Custom-made catch can/swirl pot, with braided lines going to a modified valve cover
-Locking Aerocatch kit (the new version)

Plus anything I've forgotten and all the stock parts that are left on the car after that. Like I said, full for sale thread going up once I've got prices together (and the car's not getting taken apart for another 4-5 weeks at least I think). Just don't want you spending all your money before my pre-Christmas sale starts ;)

Good luck with the move man. Wish I was in Oki now with this cold weather coming.

I was born at Lester hospital & raised there for a lot of my life. But it's been quite a while.

Were those pics of the car wash taken at Kadena Marina? Looks kind of like it.
