I'd say it's viable, you're essentially doing what Mueller is doing. They're just creating a kit with all the parts needed to adapt it to the 1g, maybe swapping out spring rates to better match the 1g and the specific car/application.

I would just think one would save themselves some money doing it that way. But I am still a total noob on suspension so I wasn't sure if that idea was ridiculous or not. $1500 savings over mullerized is a lot of money, which is why I tossed it out there.

because they are different shocks maybe ?! the mullerized ones is a track coilover and the ones you linked to are just a litle better than stock .

/A

why not i will get them if they can survive brutal new york winters. also they would look great with my willwoods...

I see you are keeping in line with the tradition on this forum of composing vague responses with nothing to back it up.

Please elaborate as to why modified evo ohlins aren't even comparable to mullerized 1G ohlins.

Humm, one's a full coilover suspension with fixed rate springs made for track driving, and another is a set of stock style struts with progressive rate springs made for comfort?

It's pretty dang obvious.

You can't change spring rates or corner balance with the stock style shocks. And to fit the rears, you'll have to cut and weld the lower mount.

Your still comparing a one off set of $4,000 coilovers to an oem replacement strut.

First sentence in the description for "stage 1"

"with an OEM-style damper"

Sounds like overpriced oem replacements with a nice spring on them.

Plus they are $2000 and not a direct bolt on. Why not get a set of dsm coilovers or koni/gc's for cheaper?

Or fork out another 1k and get the bolt on ohlins coilovers and have the real deal.

@ the test mules-

Any ideas about how this particular set up would handle drift vs. grip? What I'm hearing seems to be how we'll they stick, what about breaking them free?

Koni/GC is MAYBE $25 cheaper than going out and buying 4 brand new Bilsteins.

Evo Bilstein w/ Lowering springs-$1166 (Everything used on evom is like $700, I had mind as well spend a few hundred more for some new, non-rusted, 0mi equipment)

1G/2G Konis with Ground Controls and misc (helper springs, torrington bearings, and such)-$1140

"Cheapo" coilovers like Meghan, D2, K Sport-$1000 to $1100

Haven't been back here for a while so sorry for the late reply.

Breaking it free is going to be a combination of suspension setup and differential setup. These coilovers are fully adjustable to suit your needs but power-on balance is going to depend heavily on what differentials you're running. When you say "drift", you're talking about a lot of hp and upgrading at the very least your rear diff and at the most, putting a Cusco tarmac rally center diff in which is really expensive. The Custo tarmac rally diff is an open diff that splits the power 35/65 (front/rear). That being said, you can set up the handling balance of the car however you want. My car is setup very neutral. I can coax the car into sliding the rear end out by lifting and/or jabbing the brakes, but getting on throttle reels it back in. By upgrading to an evo rear diff and having Mueller make some suspension adjustments I could shift the car into a more tail happy on-throttle car if I wanted to.

If all you're interested in is getting the car sideways there's probably much cheaper ways to achieve that with lower end coilovers. If you want extreme handling abilities with a smooth ride and the ability to set up the balance however you want, get the Ohlins. Oh, and no matter which route you take, be sure to get the toe eliminator kit before doing anything else. This is essential.

The Cusco Tarmac is no longer available - I spent last winter hunting a replacement down. None - nothing, not even spare parts at Cusco, nothing in Japan and nothing in the Antipodes where most ended up. Nothing. It's like they never existed.

However, if you remove the VC the car behaves quite similarly to a Cusco - just a hint more push at mid-turn heavy throttle. You'll need a 4-spider with Torrington conversion, or the centre diff will self destruct pretty rapidly. Still not as good as the Cusco though :-(

Thanks very much for the reply, it does answer some of my questions. As far as the concerns about the awd/center diff/big power goes, I won't need to worry about any of that as I will be true rwd shortly. So when i say 'drift', I mean legitimate rear tire smoking sideways fun. That discussion is for another thread tho:D
Having said that, I'm interested to hear more about the street manners of this kit, and how that translates into what I'll call 'track mode', and vise versa. I've been on a few different suspension set ups over my time owning DSMs, from reasonable street ride to abusively stiff (but the car handling like its on rails).
I'm also quite curios to know how low this set up will go. (*equips flame suit*)ROFL
If you spun everything to max-low, how far off the floor would your frame rails be?
Just looking for some information and perspective here, a different suspension set up is on my short list and I'd like to only have to do it once

Haha, yes, but most people in this community can justify trying to make big power. The ones that do spend money will spend it on turbos and motor builds. I wish I saw more DSMers taking as much pride in their suspension (and paint and wheels and everything else) as they do their power output. These cars can be made to handle very well if people just put more effort and quality parts into them and not just opting for cheap shocks and lowering springs.

Anyway, hope to see some people going with these kits. If you like FP-like quality for your suspension, this is it.

Here you go, your wish has been answered! Built DSM and soon to be Muellerized suspension! It should be installed next week or the following! Thanks for the guys involved on getting these done!

Your 1g is beautiful. Very similar setup to what I'm currently building. :thumb:

How's your control arm angle up front with it that low? I can see the pickups being severely lower than the ball joint with that setup.

I think that's the car with the Tomei 2.3L Stroker. Insane.

If his youtube description is correct, than you sir, are correct. :thumb:

Very nice!...I wonder how many of us have this kit now. You will be smiling ear to ear no doubt. Did you have to set ride height?

Even though I have a set of JIC's that probably have 250 miles on them, I'm contemplating purchasing this kit for my AWD. I'd think you'd have some recommendations for me on the set up. Was unaware you have to drill the shock towers and knuckles, but, no big deal.

It looks like this might be the "V2" model. My ohlins did not require any modifications to the shock towers...or drilling of the knuckles. I did however use the spherical top hats from my JIC's, but since you already have them maybe you can get away with my version. Either way ask Mueller.

Well, I'm sure my JIC's will be fine initially. But as a potential upgrade, this is obviously the direction to move in. I'll talk to Mueller.
