Hi I have an SRS catback for my 98 GSX and I was thinking that I was just going to go ahead and replace the rest of the exhaust while I was at it. My question is... does anyone have any personal experiences with exhaust setups? Specifically for 2g DSMs.

I was wondering what setups people have with high flow cats and what setups people have with down pipes? Pros and Cons?

I have a 3in SRS catback and i'm trying to look for something that will fit nicely with it.

Pics included

So the SRS is 3in where it connects to the Cat it seems, and the front of the exhaust (the downpipe) has a 2in inlet?

I was wondering what kind of setups people were running for high flow cats or downpipes that don't use a cat at all? Is there anything else I need to know? The o2 goes right on the catback it seems right? So should that be all I need?

Pics inc are SRS catback, old cat and down pipe (which I figured I'll replace since it seems so rusted and maybe get a better flowing system)

Oh and here is my thread for what has been so far to my car..

If you go catless then you'll wanna get a gapper so your o2 sensor doesn't go off for the cat not being there. Is there any emission tests in Wisconsin?

oh well mine came on instantly when i put the test pipe on. :| I've read multiple people running the srs with a megan downpipe. I need the test pipe to swap for emissions. :sosad:

let me get this straight. you have a virgin 98 GSX and your first mod is ebay exhaust? oh well, your car...

anyways, the problem is your DP. if your state does not do emissions, go with a 3" racing downpipe (delete the cat). if your state does have emissions, go with a 3" DP to 3" test pipe. When it comes time to get your car inspected, have the test pipe cut off and weld on your cat real quick. have the car tested, get your sticker, and have the test pipe rewelded and put your cat up for next year - thats what I do. as for the CEL resulting from no cat, i wouldnt worry about it. ive had 3 DSMs with deleted cat and none of them threw a light for it. if it does you can use a spark plug protector to add a gap to the o2 sensor which will bring it out of the heavier flow of the exhaust fumes thus tricking the computer into thinking youre running cleaner than what you are. OR you can do it the correct way and invest in some engine management like an eprom chip to flash the deleted cat CEL or DSMLink to ignore the CEL altogether.

if i were you, get your money back from that cheapbay exhaust system. buy dsmlink and a wideband o2 sensor, then invest in a NICE exhaust system thats not gonna start rusting in 6 months. I recommend Megan's 3" catback system - sounds good and can be had for between 3-400$.

you can do what I did and buy a nice muffler w/ 3" inlet such as the HKS Hi-Power T, or Megan's carbon fiber titanium, or a thermal, or greddy, or WHATEVER YOU WANT... take it up to a muffler shop and have them make you custom 3" piping from your 3" downpipe to 3" muffler inlet. think i ended up spending 400$ on the entire system and thats with the Megan Carbon Fiber titanium muffler. not to mention the custom piping sounds retarded nasty with no resonators and i freaking love it... sounds like a damn v8 with the 16g and FP exhaust mani :sneaky:

another plus of having custom piping done: its cheaper (my dude charged me 170$ cash for full piping and added a bung in my DP for free) and if somethign happens to your exhaust, like when i tried to straddle a rut on a nasty backroad and scraped the bottom of my car, you can always take it back to the muffler shop and theyll lift it up and weld any exhaust leaks up for FREE.

I hear its all about luck. some cars will never throw the CEL, some will come on instantly. some will come on after 100 miles, some will come on after 20 miles.

sorry if i came off as a jerk but if it were my car i wouldnt let any ebay parts come within 100 yards of my ride. looks like youve done a lot of good work to the car, keep it up man! sell that exhaust system and buy a good brand! like i said before you can get a full megan catback for about 100$ more than the ebay system.

i ran a 3" megan catback on an ole 95 talon and it sounded really good and mounted right up super easy.

A pipe's a pipe brah.

The SRS is a good exhaust. I have mine coupled to the Megan cat-less DP and it fit flawlessly. Great sound and flow.

if you say so.

anyone making real power is going to tell you to stay away from anything ebay. period.

sure itll bolt up and flow but for 100$ more you could have something nice.

Honestly an exhaust is an exhaust the only real concern with "eBay" exhaust is to make sure it's the true sizing 3 inch is best 2.5 if staying under 400whp but then again you just want 3 inch anyways and call it a day. Pass emissions with stock cat then just get a 3 inch down pipe that will fit your exhaust and call it a day. I always have passed emission without a cat.

Props on that 3" exhaust. A 3" pipe is a 3" pipe, it don't matter what its made of, gold or stainless steel. As long as it fits good then you're set. I have a home made 3.5" exhaust on my car with a vibrant stock looking muffler and its not all nice and shiny, flat black. Car makes over 600 whp and I drive it everyday, I'm sure my exhaust will rust out ways before that stainless steel one does :) Good job on saving your money for something where name brand matters a little more :thumb:

I like what Afizzle said about saving your cat but instead of rewelding it every time you have to do emissions just buy a 3" down pipe along with a 3" test pipe. It will come with the same flanges like on your down pipe and cat back. Put all that together and you're rolling with full 3" exhaust. When time comes to do emissions, unbolt your test pipe and bolt the cat back in its place. Literally 20 minutes of work every year or two. You might have to replacing the gaskets when you do that, maybe $10 dollars but that's a cheap fix to pass emissions.

Nice looking car man.

Says the guy with a Megan muffler on his car? You do know that it wasn't so long ago people said the SAME exact thing about Megan? They got their start on ebay.

I paid $450 shipped for a Megan downpipe + SRS exhaust to show up at my door. $150 more would have got me a Thermal CAT-BACK that necked down to 2.5" near the flange...

Not everything on Ebay is garbage. Hell even the welding is some of the better I've seen done on exhaust work in my life. In fact, the exhaust was so well made and packaged well to my door, that I was surprised I only paid $250 for it! Full 3" Stainless exhaust at a bargain price? This isn't a turbo man, its an exhaust.

Thanks for all the constructive criticism and positive responses, I appreciate every single persons opinion, i'm sure some people don't fully agree on some stuff but it's nice to get all of the feedback anyways.

So specifically for a DP I'd be looking for something along the lines of...

Mitsubishi Eclipse 1995-1999 MR-SSDP-ME95GSX $130.00 Add To Cart
Car Trim: GSX
Product Specs: 3 inch piping

Megan Racing Downpipe Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon [Turbo TSi AWD] MR-SSDP-ME95GSX

???

Does that seem about right? What is the difference between the two? Is there another one I should know about also? Or a better priced place?

I noticed the inlet seems to be 2.5inch... is that going to be a problem? My stock GSX was 2inch? From the picture I posted showing the 2inches, unless I'm mistaken about something? Any modifications I need to know about that I might have to do or extra pieces/flanges?

I'm assuming that the Megan 3in DP will bolt directly onto the SRS, i've had the SRS sitting in a garage for over a year so I'm going to be sticking with that..., my main question was about the DP and it fitting in with my SRS and the inlet of the megan DP being 2.5in and my old one looks like it was 2in correct?

So I was looking at..

Megan Racing Downpipe Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon [Turbo TSi AWD] MR-SSDP-ME95GSX

and,.,,

Megan Racing Downpipe Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon [TSi FWD Turbo] MR-SSDP-ME95GSTV2

What is the difference between the two? and if this is the correct part feel free to direct me elsewhere or to somewhere better to look at the part.

NVM I need to learn to read..

http://www.redlinemotive.com/part-number/megan-racing/mr-ssdp-me95gstv2.asp

isn't for the AWD models, the other one is.

this one

http://www.redlinemotive.com/part-number/megan-racing/mr-ssdp-me95gsx.asp

so is this the correct part?

Anything else I need to know, I've been looking around and googling, just wanna make sure it all is smooth sailing when I go to put it on. :D thanks!

You still using the stock o2housing?

That's about as cheap as you can find them. Punishment racing also carries a true 3in downpipe if running an aftermarket o2 housing.

Yeah I am for now, eventually I will replace that, the manifold, fuel pump, then maybe the injectors, DSMlink, and a bigger turbo..

For now I have the clutch, catback, flywheel, and some suspension stuff that I can work on. If you saw the link to my first thread.

And alright, seemed about as cheap as I would be able to get it, any supporting parts anyone think I'm going to need for that 3in DP to my SRS?

How about how my inlet is 2in and that one is 2.5in on the downpipe?

OMG

It'll be fine. You just need to dent the megan pipe a little to make room for the stock o2 nuts.
