In the case of DSM cars and even the current Mitsubishi's (Outlander Sport), at the same plant, the VIN is just a number for registration for DOT's. The VIN numbers are not in order on the assembly line. So if anyone has the highest VIN number that doesn't mean that it was built last. As Bastard said scheduled perhaps. Not assembled. I know for sure, even the "last Galant and Eclipse" weren't the last ones built.
The number that is used for identifying the car in the plant is the serial number. That is the number that identifies the specific vehicle and all parts on the track sheets. (the sheet each work station uses to identify the correct parts to be installed. In the assembly shops anyway)
The number of the vehicle that is in order on the assembly line each day is the sequence number.

I don't dispute that. That's why I keep saying VIN-sequential. Without official documentation from the plant, there's no way of knowing so it's pointless to speculate. If CAPS is right, then all the cars were made in a matter of weeks. So, does it really matter whose is last when there are multiple lines cranking them out in parallel at breakneck speed?

If I'm not mistaken, the last 6 digits of the VIN are the serial number...

There aren't multiple lines in parallel. all assembly lines are single file. Final inspection is the only multiple line. two lines side by side.
Yes it is at break neck speed. LOL

:nono: You are mistaken.

Just cause its the last vin does not mean its the last car made. I work at Chrysler assembly in Belvidere il and I'm looking at the cars on the line now and they are not in order by vin.

that was stated in an early post already.

Would be interesting what was the last talon made turbo or non turbo.

Cool, seems like you might know a thing or two about the Normal plant! I'm all ears! Why do they run single-file vs. parallel?

You have time to screw off online at work???

I posted that before shift. But I actually don't work on the assembly line anyway I am a teamleader my jobs pretty laid back most of the time and I have 2 computers at my desk one with Internet.

The paint dept. at Chrysler has 4 lines that run parallel it drops to one line when it hits trim.

My guess is they run single file because that's the way the plant was designed. LOL
I've worked there almost 24 years. :aha: Final assembly.:shhh:

Sweet, never known anyone that worked there! Obviously they don't treat you too badly to have put in 24 years.

Did you build any 2G DSMs?

My two biggest unknowns are:

1 - What do the Option codes mean? Can they can be used to derive whether a car had ABS, Sunroof or LSD? I've looked all over online, no luck. There are 233 unique Option codes. 72 are common to both 97 and 98, 125 are unique to 1997 cars, and 36 are unique to 1998 cars.

2 - How did they determine what "TSi AWD" lettering color to put on the cars?
I've seen black cars with silver lettering, black cars with blue lettering, red cars with blue, red with silver, gray with silver, gray with fuscia....but never red/fuscia, red/teal, and a few other combinations. What is the rhyme/reason there? Is it in any way associated with the car's Option code (G70, G73, J89, etc)?

Thanks Super Sport!

Interesting - those are totally different option codes than what CAPS has for these cars.

Check out the list of CAPS option codes for 2Gb AWD Talons:

The codes in my post 63 from Edmunds match the codes from my 1997 Talon Brochure. I have no clue how to map them to the CAPS codes and Google just failed me.

[QUOTE=jsmcpn-----The last Talon VIN is!

4E3AL54F4WE099109
P88D / Paprika Red Pearl
Option Code J14
Interior Code 78H Fabric??, Black Dash, Tan Carpet
Manual trans

well if this is the last vin # to be issued, than it lives in canada and owned by a woman.

has an open recall too for the t-case leak. and had 32k back in 2001.

makes you wonder how many 98 talons are still on the road, after accidents / totals, mechanical problems, or just not being used. and then of how many of those are awd and of what color.

I don't have any hard info here but the only 98 talons I know of in this general area are both paprika red awd m/t cars. There are probably 7 black 97 tsi awd's. definitely interesting how few of them were built in 98 with certain color combos.

What is the build date on that "last talon made"

That's exactly why I am doing this project. They are rare to begin with, and MANY have been totalled. For example:

There are 87 black/black 1998 manual-trans AWD Talons with US emissions class. Out of the first 50 VINs, 6 show in the NICB database as being involved in total-loss collisions. It is possible some of these cars were rebuilt and salvage titled, but 12% is a lot considering how specific a sampling this is. If that percentage stays true for all the cars in the database, then there are less than 1600 roadworthy 2Gb AWD Talons in the USA.

Lots of those have suffered other fates, like being defaced with aftermarket or Mitsubishi bumpers, crazy frame or body modifications, etc.

I have found one possible clue to mapping Eagle brochure option codes to CAPS options. They don't match.

The CARFAX for my Talon's Autotrader ad shows that the car has a power sun/moon roof. Or maybe I just missed it for 15 years.
CARFAX Vehicle History Report for this 1998 EAGLE TALON TSI AWD

I understand that this is just one data point, but it's not encouraging.

All build dates have been extracted from the CAPS 2001 database. 1998 Talon dates are now valid.

With a few exceptions, all 2519 cars were made in 49 10-day weeks. That's an average of 51.4 cars per week.
A few weeks were very light, producing only 5-7 cars/week.
A few weeks were heavy production, producing 100-145 cars/week.

The "Live" Result Charts (Hey Google, it's broken and hasn't updated forever!):

Still working on the 2Gb AWD Talon Registry, BTW :)

Some figures gleaned thus far:

344 2Gb AWD Talons originally built as California emissions model (MNGFL4E & MRGFL4E):
261 have apparently never been emissions tested in California.
13 have total loss collision records, without any further CA emissions test records.
22 have current emissions tests in California. Timestamp and comment fields updated to reflect the last emissions test date/time.
24 have expired emissions tests in California, with last-tested dates ranging from 1997 to 2013.
5 have been spotted in other states more recently than their last CA test.

96 2Gb AWDs are/were in Colorado:
7 total-loss insurance claims (3 that I am personally aware of), 1 rebuilt as shown by recent emissions pass.
17 are current on their 2-year emissions dyno test.
10 expired tests 2012-present.
63 pre-2012 records without timestamps.

105 hits in Illinois
22 have current registrations
23 have "JUNKED" titles, which I'm pretty sure are typically submitted by auto wrecking yards.

Similar data to above now available for:
Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia (only 2 hits!), Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Wisconsin

As for the "Last Talon" discussion, like I said, without official information from the factory it is pretty much impossible to tell. But it's easy to narrow it down when focusing on the turbo cars, since they're all in the CAPS database. I could do all this data mining for all 1Gs, GVR4s, and 2G Eclipse/Talon turbo cars, or any other group of cars in CAPS for that matter, but I only have so much time to dedicate. However, I did already extract all the 99 GSXs (1292 VINs) and turbo Spyders (9912 VINs from 96-99).

The newest AWDs have a build week of 98.2.1, there are 29 of them. They are all Canadian models, all 5-speeds, all gray seats/carpet. 19 fabric and 10 leather.
Here they are, VIN-sequentially... not the order off the assembly line.
