Do those gauges sweep on start up?

Also, what are all the buttons for? I understand the button on the speed-o, but what about the others?

Unfrotunately, they do not "sweep" that I noticed. When I put power to them to illuminate the gauges, they did "jump" a bit, but no sweep. I haven't gotten the chance (more so, I've been lazy) to read the instructions, so I'm not sure what each button does, but I think they've got a "warning" setting that you can access through the button some how. Not really sure. I do know that their Fuel Level gauges are completely programmable for Empty and Full, I presume the button has something to do with that...

Nice set up man! Looks freakin great, and what kind of paint did you use?

1. Thank you.

2. I used SEM's Chip Guard in Satin Black finish. They also offer a Clear version if your needs require. Might be special order only, I'm not sure what kind of specialty paint stores are in your area.

The only thing i found "customizable" on that site is this:
Eagle Gauge Glow Dials and Custom Gauges by SpeedHut
and:
Mitsubishi Gauge Glow Dials and Custom Gauges by SpeedHut

Maybe he can clarify?....

In any case love the project looks good.

1. Thank you.

2. You have to actually select a gauge in order to customize it. This took me a while to find since they don't have a "Customize this gauge" link.

3. I wish I had seen that custom HVAC item (Mitsubishi Gauge Glow Dials and Custom Gauges by SpeedHut) before I ordered my gauges... Now I have to spend more money... Thanks... :sneaky:

Just scroll to the bottom of the page and let the flash script load. You can't actually order the gauge without "customizing" unless you want the default gauge.

I gotta say I am utterly impressed with your fit and finish overall. I'm so glad you went with a textured look instead of a gloss sheen. I LOVE the OEM style textures to really make these type of modifications blend in.

Did the texture paint create a slightly soft texture, sort of like rubberized splatter, or a hard texture closer to plastic?

1. Thank you. I've seen my boss (who's been doing this kind of stuff WAY longer than I have) do projects both ways, and we both agree that if you want an "OEM" look, it's gotta be textured.

2. The SEM Chip Guard is exactly that. Chip Guard. It's tough stuff (well, at least for paint anyway). We used to use SEM Texture Coat at my shop, but the boss likes to experiment, and we found that the Chip Guard created more of an OEM look than their Texture Coat, and it came in the color we used most (Satin Black), whereas the Texture Coat only comes in flat black and has to be painted afterwards.

Side note: You can't really tell in the pictures, but the glow is on maximum. They're pretty dim in person. Perfect for night driving, but if you want to run them behind smoked plexi, or constantly illuminated, it might not work out too well. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if they're just that dim in the day light. It might be the fact that I was using a "not so recently" charged 12V Dewalt battery to supply power... Maybe they'll be brighter on the 14.4V the alternator should be putting out...

Also, if I didn't thank you for your positive feedback on my work, thank you. It's greatly appreciated.

So... is it possible to use your stock wiring and sending units? Or is that a no-go.

Unfortunately, I don't have a positive answer. Since each gauge comes with a new sending unit, I assume that they won't work with the stock ones (except fuel, tach, and speedo). The only gauge that didn't come with a sending unit besides those three was the Air/Fuel WB, I need to buy a sender for that one.

Hey no problem but i just reallize i linked you to the non turbo ones because I was looking for myself :p. In any case if you havent found it already you need the turbo ones listed here:

Wouldnt want you to order the wrong ones. Or for anyone else who wants to choose different models here:

Wow, that looks neat!

Back from the dead, how are the gauges holding up? Going to start on a project like this for my TSi. Very nice work, inspired me to spend some $$$$ :thumb:

Since I haven't found time to do much work on the car (or money for more parts) the gauges have been sitting in my tool box surrounded in microfiber, so they're holding up fine!

Wow, that looks neat!

Holy crap that looks nice!

Thank you both!

I didnt see a coolant temp gauge.. What are you doing for that?

I knew I was forgetting something when I started this build... Crap, now I have to find a logical place for another gauge... I suppose I could put it in the factory cig lighter location... Maybe do a vent delete... Hmm... At least I'll have something to do when I can afford it!

Just have to use Link V3 to keep checking for codes then and we re all set! I Just spent far too long making a ballin setup with everything I would ever possibly need. 1700 bucks worth LOL. Never touch them again after that. Gimme a year or so and I may just order it all haha

I would love to start a project like this myself, however, I don't know squat about electrical systems other than audio. I've got a cancer running through mine and keep putting off trying to fix it, anyway back on point, is the wiring for these gauges pretty straightforward/idiot-proof? What really confuses me about this set up is this talk of the ECU, and the stock cluster. I'm guessing that the the ECU is bypassed and everything is hard wired, being controlled through ECM Link.

With my questions out of the way, I want to say your write up is pretty good. I'm only having issues following you with the wiring part.

I still, as of now, haven't gotten to the wiring stage. From what the instructions show, it appears to be pretty straight forward. All you have to do is either connect the gauge to an aftermarket sending unit, or find the factory signal within the car.

The fuel level gauge is a prime example of the latter. All you have to do is tap into the factory fuel level wires from your fuel tank and set your gauge to either full or empty, maybe tweak what resistance it needs to read properly, and you have a working fuel level gauge.

Hope this helps!:thumb:

Seems pretty simple actually when you say it like that.

Great write up. Fantastic job on putting it together.

Nice work! Plan on tackling this within the next three months myself. I m considering one of these for space concerns:

EDIT: I was linking to their quad gauges....

If the RPM one went higher I would do it as well.
