First time I've seen fender flares on a 2g

Before I had my old fenders flared in metal I had originally planned to use fenders like the ones pictured in the original post from The Z Store (thezstore.com). I believe these were the ones I picked up:
Motorsport! Fiberglass ZG Flare Kit, 70-78 240Z-260Z-280Z - The Z Store! Nissan-Datsun 240Z-260Z-280Z-280ZX-300ZX(Z31/Z32)-350Z-370Z Parts

I had held them in place by hand and they looked like they would fit nicely with work. I spoke to a few body guys locally to do the work though and they said it was going to cost as much to install those as it would to get metal ones made (especially since the rear overfender would have to be cut/re-welded either way), so I ended up have my fenders flared with metal work. Sold the fenders to a 1g owner.

To be honest, I like how the 240z fender flares look on that 2gb better :) Not the best aerodynamically but they look pretty damned cool!

Haha, nope, didn't run across that thread in the 420A forum. But it's only a few days old too so I don't feel so bad. Thing is, flares are not for everyone and most likely appeal more to those who need them in order to run wider wheels/tires for racing. Everyone else will just look at them and comment on whether or not they like the look. Threads that get started outside the racing forum will likely just fizzle and die off.

I'm hoping we'll see more in-depth discussions here in the racing forum that will lead to specific product options (like identifying which ones will actually fit the fender arch of these cars) so that those who do need them can easily find them, buy them, and get them to fit fairly easy. These ones look like they fit pretty good, it would be nice to know which ones they are.
 
Kind of off topic but is +27 truely the most aggressive offset to run on 2g's w/o risking wheel bearings, or is that just for 1g's and if so, what's the limit for a 2g?
 
So let's not focus too much on looks please. In fact, I may go through and clean up all the replies since most of you likely didn't pay attention to the forum this was posted in.

Great solution for someone who wants to run a negative offset or a 9" wide rim. I'm hesitant to believe the car in the pictures did it for anything other than looks. Aren't most bolt-on fender flares, like the ones in the picture off a 240z, just "bolted-on" over the existing fender? I get it, you don't want the tire sticking out and "looking" ridiculous (maybe SCCA rules make it illegal for your tires to stick out X" from the side of the car? I don't know) so you bolt on flares, but unless your fender is actually cut and modified to accept flares and you're actually running a wheel/tire combo the needs a flare, adding a set would appear to only be about "looks".

Just thinking out loud....and thinking about how I could do that to my car with the molded side skirts....:hmm:
 
a solution (flairs) so they can run wider wheels and tires and the wheel wells on these cars don't allow much more than a 8.5" wheel without the tire sticking out or rubbing on the fender in a racing application.

Thought I would emphasize the above point here by quoting.

The point..

No flairs:
1. Tuck a smaller than optimal wheel/tire, and lower the car appropriately.
2. Run an optimal wheel/tire setup with a non-optimal, non-tuck setup

Flairs:
1. Tuck an optimal wheel/tire, and lower the car optimally.


All theoretical. This car does not look to be track tested, but the idea could be useful in making a 2g faster if the rest of the car was setup to work at the lower ride-height.
 
Aren't most bolt-on fender flares, like the ones in the picture off a 240z, just "bolted-on" over the existing fender?

To run a wheel that wide, you probably would have to modify the fender a bit, especially in the rear. It would get in the way most likely unless you really roll/pull it or better yet, chop it. Just most people have a hard time chopping the rear fender since it's not easily replaceable.

Not to mention there's a seam there that makes that part structural. The fronts are easy, chop a bunch of the stock fender out, bolt on flare, easy clearance (provided your tires are actually the limiting factor on travel, not us SPC UCA guys). The rears are tougher, and I'd like to see how someone would actually implement a flare back there that made a difference in available travel. It would have to involve cutting the rear fender up, unless I'm missing something, but would be tough to do since that is not a cosmetic area like the front is.

It's similar on the 1g - that seam limits how much you can cut. I know you can cut it and then weld the seam again but not sure how much clearance can really be gained. Seems like a lot of work that might only result in less than an inch, with a whole lot of risk of it all looking like complete ass if it's not done right.

But then again, that's only assuming the car will be lowered enough to where the tire would rub. I have rear tires that don't tuck on my 1g. Ideally, I'd like to lower the car another inch or two and have the tires tuck but I think I'd need flares with cut up fenders.
 
The main reason I don't run flares on my car is because I'd get kicked out of my "Street Prepared" class in a local time trial group I run with (Corvettes of Massachusetts aka COM). Keep this in mind before cutting/bolting up some crazy setup, as you might get dumped into a higher classification where you end up with gutted rollerskates with 10k in suspension setup.

9" Wide wheels fit fine under DSM wheel wells. If you plan on running 275 width tires, yeah, they're not going to fit.
 
Hi everyone, my name is Allen and I own the car that you guys are talking about. I have been a "lurker" :) on this forum for a long time now. I have been using my friends account to browse the forums and get some ideas. I "semi" customized those flares on the car myself. Those pictures of the flares on facebook and nasoic are about 90% done. I painted them with plasti dip temporarily because my friend wanted me to bring my car to one of the car meets in my area(wheels and meals). I am in the process of painting my car and shaping the flares right now (more arch on the flares and finish off the section where the gas tank door is located).

I just started working on my car again and these flares and rims are the most recent project that I have done.

Anyway, Thank you for all the kind comments.

The tire/wheel specs are Enkei Rpf1s 18x10.5 wrapped in Hankook RS3 265/35/18

The car looks amazing dude, where did you get the flares? Whats the offset on the wheels?

Instead of cutting everything up you could simple run close to stock ride height with good spring rates and place the flares lower than the actually wheel well. That would net you suspension travel, good suspension geometry and little to know fender gap . That is what RWB does with many of his widebody Porsche's.

Just a thought.

That's what I was planning to do with my 1g - well, I'd do as much cutting as I could without touching the rear seam and then lower the car enough to where it wouldn't hit the fender. I'm still hesitant to start cutting though the rear though.

AJ, what offset are those Enkeis? And as others have asked, any idea what application the flares were originally meant for, or were they universal? Do you have a side shot so we can see the curvature of the arches?
 
Wheels appear to be +15 offset based on what's available for that size
