If anyone wants to see the first thread I started on my build from back in Dec 2010:http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/hangout/385936-poor-hs-student-build-thread.html

First some history. Growing up, my neighbor had a 2ga Talon. I didnt know what is was back then, but it was sweet. Whenever the neighbor hood kids were out he would threaten us if we got anywhere near it. Now I understand how he felt. I guess thats where the dsm bug first bit. So through out highschool I saved money, and went on the look for a Talon. For my first car I picked up a 95 TSi AWD. Its the gold one. It was clean, mildy upgraded, but had problems. I wrecked it the first few months I had it. I sometime wish I wasnt so dumb, but things didnt play out as they did, I wouldnt have learned so much and I wouldnt have the car I have now.

Well after parting most of it out (kept eprom, sideskirts, door panels, wheels and shift knob) and working, I saved up enough to buy another dsm. After a very short search, there was a 97 TSi AWD for sale right up the road. I jumped on it. It had a very clean interior, paint was horribly faded and it was bone stock (except hks bov)Bought it for 2500. Only had 114k

7-2010

Swaped over the rims from my first talon, changed the whole car.

talon057.jpg

I then spiced up the interior a little as well. I took the black door panels from my first talon, removed the cloth insert, the put in the tan leather one. I loved how it turned out.

Shortly after that, I wanted to make it go faster. Then money was tight, and couldnt afford much. I ditched the t25 and picked up a 14b. Pieced together my own instal kit, ebay front mount, and a full ebay exhaust.

It was driven like that for quit some time. It had bad boost creep, leaked oil (messed up AN line for turbo return) and was slow. It was my daily driver, and it did good in snow.

When I had the money, I bought parts. I didnt go out and get lunch, go to the movies, I saved my money. This money pit is what I actually love to spend money on. Heres some various parts along the way.

I stock piled parts for the longest time, I didnt really have the know how. But sure enough these cars turned me into a gear head.

6-2011

I graduated high school! My parents got me a tool box for my graduation present. Finally was done with school and had time to tear Victoria apart.
Decided to do some maintenance and fix some things that needed attention.

Picked up some Redline heavy shock proof and mt90
Talon038.jpg

I was tired of boost creep. I wanted control over my car. I bought a spare 14b, and ported the piss out of the turbine housing. Threw that on and walah! no more boost creep. I could then install my halman, and can finally control boost!

I also had a spare 2g Intake manifold. I cleaned it up, ported it for a 1g JDM TB, and painted it. I installed an EGR block off plate as well. First week out of school, I put it on. Man was the not fun. Craming your arm in the smallest places just to get bolts off, and getting them back on was another story. But damn did it clean up the engine bay. Also deleted Cruise control.

My one nipple 1g throttle body:
Talon039.jpg

Who needs cruise control and emissions?
Talon041.jpg

All clean and purty
Talon050-1.jpg

And after that I decided I didnt want to drive my baby everyday. I started to save for a DD.

I installed a few things along the way
Solid aluminum shifter bushings
Talon054-1.jpg

And finally got my Fuelab AFPR in
Talon053-1.jpg

Shortly after I could then get my wally 255hp in too.

I then found a not so perfect DD. Another DSM!

I picked up a 92 auto TSi AWD 6/4 combo. With only 102k! It was a steal of a deal.
Talon069-1.jpg

Talon066-1.jpg

Talon075-1.jpg

But that was short lived. I had some problems with it, mainly just old things that were rotting. Causing leaks, leaving me stranded, eating more money. And the last straw was it wouldnt pass emissions. I ended up selling it, and made some money off it. Sometimes I wish I didnt sell it. The guy I sold it to is a good local dsmer and is taking really good care of it. He keeps me updated. He makes me jealous. But I couldnt afford 2 money pits.

Now that the Talon was back on DD status, all I could really do is pile up parts. Heres a peak: Tial 38, XTD extreme clutch kit, Precision 1200cc, poly bushing set, all 4 corner gets new brakes, and front gets all new control arms, motor mounts, tank to rail fuel line ect ect

What good does all these parts do just sitting around?? I needed to find anther DD so I could tear shit apart again. I looked for another dsm, but after thought I just need to find a good beater thats good on gas. Well I found one aloth better then that. Rare too!

Thats right! An 89 Mitsu Mighty Max! Only 121k on it. Best 1600$ ive ever spent. Ive done a bunch of maintenance on it. I think I see a 4g swap in the future :)

Now the thread is up to date. The last week and a half (3-10-12) Ive got a lot done.

You know those brakes, and control arms from above? Yeah those are in now. Everything came apart fairly easy, only had a hard time getting the axle out of the half shaft. Other then that it went smoothly.

As I do with everything, when I take something apart I clean it. So I painted all my brake calipers, and I also painted my front wheel wells.

Got alot done today. Today was my day off so after school I tried to finish everything up. Got the wheel bearings in. Also got a package yesterday.

BNIB BC racing coilovers

Talon179.jpg

I love getting packages! Today my favorite guy showed up, the ups guy! I had to take a break and awh in its SS beauty. Thermal R&D cat back exhaust. I also have megan dp on the way too. I just hate the Punishment racing DP i have now. Pisses me off.
Talon172.jpg

Talon180.jpg

Back to work, in this organized mess.
Talon183.jpg

Got the new powerslot rotors, hawk pads, and freshly painted calipers on. Cant forget the ss braided brake lines! Also got all the coilovers in as well.

Talon182.jpg

Talon184.jpg

The rears only got new rotors, hawk pads, braided lines and the calipers painted. Those are still drying.
Talon185.jpg

Torquing to spec is very important guys! Every bolt I touch gets torqued to spec
Talon175.jpg

I also threw on a small 16g. The 14b was doing good, I just needed a bigger kick in the pants until I get the real set up on.
Talon186.jpg

And thats it for now. Ill keep you guys posted, expect some changes to come soon, mostly under the hood :)

Man those first pictures remind me of the beginning of my upgrade path!! HKS SSBOV, cap off the stock intake connector, plugs/wires, probably capped the factory boost plugs, blocked egr LOL. Eventually the HKS broke and put a crushed 1g on and recirculated.

Would love to hear back once you get to ride it with the coilovers. Picked up some SS lines...may get evo braaks but I def need a set of shocks/coilovers before anything else. Keep up the good work I can't wait to get my car back...just got ECMLink v3 and some other goodies.

Small update:

Well it just so happens that the small 16g I threw on has screwed up j pipe bolt threads. So I need to re tap it, just havnt had time off of work and school. Other then that the Talon is ready to drive. A buddy from work came over and helped me bleed the brakes. Stupid turbo is the only thing holding it back from being drivable.

Also have some teaser pics

FP HTA68, FP mani, PR recurc o2 housing, Tial WG
Talon191.jpg

Well what good would a stock head do with all those goodies? Your right, it wouldnt go good together

Talon195.jpg

Rebuilt head with Manley Valve springs, Ti retainers, 3g revised lifters, and DKS 272 cams. 3 angle valve job, new seals ect

Talon196.jpg

Repainted my valve cover, and polished the leters

and all the gaskets, timing belt, tensioners and a new water pump. Good time to do maintenance. I have a new set of arp heads studes to go with as well.
Talon193.jpg

Although I highly doubt the hta68 wont perform as I hope it will, I decided to make a back up turbo in case. I have a new 11 blade td06h turbine, new 20g compressor wheel, 7cm housing machined for said wheel, CHRA machined for 20g wheel (was a 14b) and a 3 inch compressor housing.

Talon188.jpg

Next update, Ill let you know how the new suspension rides. I bet its night and day, cant wait to drive it. Havnt felt boost in almost a month

Good shit T , Im glad to see you and how far you've come =) I bet she is a whole new beast!!! Now kick some of those honduh girls square in the snatch LOL Hey I also love the mighty max That thing is gangster!!! =) That tranny i got from you, i sent to shep for a stage three and double 3-4 gears. well trevor called to say that the center diff was cracked, the viscous coupler was burned up along with a few other things that were bad so it ended up not being a good core=( He helped me out tho and it's only going to end up being 2600. shipped instead of 2200. so it sucks but i can't wait. Maybe at the end of summer my project will be close than ill post a journal like you. MAD RESPECT MAN ON YOUR BUILD, Im glad to see you come up. When i get link, you think you can show me some tunning ?

Oh forgot to tell you that I got a B16 turbo in the junkyard a week ago!!! For 2 dollars!! LOL No shaftplay just a few cracks in the hotside but man for two bucks!! I had to let you know man im still on high from that find LOL

Update:4/24/12

The talon has been running for a few weeks now. The suspension rides amazing. It was a night and day difference. I have no experience with anything other then stock suspension on a dsm, but these BC racing coilovers ride pretty good. Maybe its just the fact 15 year old bushings and tie rods were replaced, but now it handles great. Just need to get some good shoes on her.

last weekend a buddy came over and helped me remove all the bushings from the spare rear subframe I had. Just need to press in the new poly bushings.

Talon201.jpg

Talon199.jpg

Also picked up a evo 3 intake manifold, soaked it in degreeser, ported it for 1g TB and then painted it.

Talon204.jpg

Should keep the power band low, but not really choke up top like a 2g manifold. Hopefully kicks ass with the HTA68.

Other then that I havnt done much. Just enjoying boost. She needs a tune pretty bad, but Ill just hold up until I get the new head and turbo set up on. Mostly been working on the mighty max. Trying to get it to pass emissions. And it leaks more then 4 dsm's combined so Im trying to track those down. Replaced the fuel pump and checked all vacuum lines. Unfortunatly I think it needs some carb work, and thats way over my head, so I might just have to bite the bullet and take max to someone who knows what there doing. So funds are going towards that, so I can get plates for it. Otherwise I would be saving to get some good tires for the 17x8 5 zigens I have, then after that a paint job.

5-1-12

Well I started to tear the talon apart last weekend. I had a local shop suck out all the refrigerant from the AC so I could remove it. Removing everything went fairly smooth. I got all the AC out, and also re did my power steering cooler.

Talon212.jpg

Talon213.jpg

Talon214.jpg

It fits perfect with the radiator in. I wraped the lines with heat tape just incase.

The head came off easy. Only problem encountered was the tensioner tool didnt thread in correctly and when detensioning the T belt the tool bent. Hopefully it will hold together for the install.

Talon216.jpg

Talon217.jpg

Got the new head on, with a new oem composite gasket. Installed the evo intake mani before, because putting it on with the head in the car is not easy.

Just waiting on a few packages in the mail to be able to finish everything up. After that going to go get her tuned. Maybe see a dyno before winter. I really want to see what it runs at the track, so I know I will be hitting bandimere up before this season is over.

I got the oem knuckle kit from extremepsi, and found the coilovers on the classifieds here new in box. I also got alot of parts from rockauto. I used rock auto for my upper ball joints, and tie rod ends.

Forgot a few pictures of the new head on:

Update 5-8-12

Got some more things done after yesterday and today. The new timing belt along with a new balance shaft belt are in and timed. Also got the alternator and PS pump back in with new belts. Just a heads up, if you put the wrong timing cover bolt by the water pump, the water pump pulley wont spin. Had to take the pulleys back off to remove the bolt.

Talon225.jpg

Installed the both poly motor mounts and one of the roll stops. Also removed the battery tray and charcoal canister. Im going to be dropping the battery onto the subframe, so everything had to go. I was able to bend and pound the stock battery tray into position to bolt it to the body. I plan on racing, so I need to be able to pass tech. With the stock tray I can use a battery tie down, even though the battery will not budge once in.

Talon226.jpg

Installed the throttle body and TB elbow too. Want to share what I learned from another DSMer.

Instead of buying the throttle body gaskets separately, go to autozone or orielys and just buy a roll of gasket paper. I like to use the stuff for water pumps and thermostats. Its thicker then the regular gasket. Then just trace on your gasket, cut out with scissors and blade, then install. Boost leak free for cheap. I use it for TB gaskets, BOV, J pipe, and even used it for intake mani to head for a while, and it holds up great.

Talon228.jpg

Also I found that when you take of your throttle body numerous times, the elbow (if made out of aluminum) can bulge around the bolt holes making it not flat. Best to check all gasket surfaces with a flat edge and then file down as needed. Saves from doing things twice, which isnt fun Im sure you all know.

Talon229.jpg

I then attempted to do a wire tuck. I ended up giving up because I would need to start to cutt and splice to get to where I want, and I just want to get it up and running with no issues before I start anything like that. The TPS wires are short along with another sensors wiring. So I just did the cheap wire tuck, by turning the injectors over, and then plugged everything in. Looks a lot better. Ill do a better one later.

Talon231.jpg

Still waiting for a couple of things in the mail. I broke the CAS bolt ( one that threads into the cam) so Im waiting on one that I ordered to arrive, along with the coil on plug that is taking forever to show up.

Couple more pictures
Talon224.jpg

Talon230.jpg

Ill probably get the battery all in along with the turbo set up by the end of this week. More pics to come!

Update:6-5-12

Everything is put back together. Ive put almost 100 miles on the new head. Unfortunatly I havnt boosted it, as it needs to be tuned. The new clutch and SS clutch line are about to get installed this weekend. After that its getting tuned.

Heres some pictures from the last few weeks:

Wrapped my punishment o2 housing

Some turbo porn. HTA68 next to S16g
Talon233.jpg

Talon234.jpg

I made a custom 3 inch cold air intake pipe. I bought a giant 4.5 to 3 inch 45 degree couplet and cut some 3 inch pipe. Routed it to the stock sidemount place and stuck the filter right in the bumper opening. I love it, and should keep intake temps down.

Talon236.jpg

Talon237.jpg

I wrapped my J pipe with exhaust wrap as it was really close to the exhaust manifold, also wrapped my Lower intercooler pipe with cool tape. Along with the turbo blanket and wrapped o2 I should be pretty safe with under hood temps.

Since I wrapped my J pipe, the stock radiator fan wouldnt work. I went to ebay and bought a cheap fan shroud kit with fans. I cut my old harness and wired it in stock. I had to take out the drivers side fan as the damn tial wastegate would get in the way. Should be fine with just 1 fan. Ive never had over heating issues even with no fans. Sorry for the sideways pictures. Sometimes photobucket changes the picture

Talon247.jpg

Talon248.jpg

Talon239.jpg

Also got a new set of rims for the talon. 5zigen 17x8, just waiting on tires at work. I went with hankook RS-3 in 245 40 17. They are on back order so I should get them in a couple weeks. I hate the look of stock rims.

Talon245.jpg

Talon246.jpg

Thats all for now

Awesome build thread. It's a great read. The car is really looking good. Our cars were nearly identical from the factory, if not identical. Keep up the good work. Any plans for fixing that paint?

Yes actually have some money saved up going to get a paint job hopefully this winter. Ive fallowed your thread too corey, You have a great build as well. Thanks for the encouragement

She will sure look good after the paint is done. Do you plan on keeping it black?

And thank you! Mine has been a very fun project for me as well.
