I have a 20g compressor wheel with the anti surge housing and the CHRA/turbine housing are from an MHI B16g. Is it worth my while to have the turbine housing machined to accept the TD06H turbine or just keep the TD05H? The flapper is welded shut and ill be running a 38mm wastegate off the manifold. 1000cc injectors and link to tune with. 22-24psi max, 93octane and the rest of mods are in my profile. Turbo and injectors are not going to be installed till I figure this out. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.:)

I think it is definatly worth it. i just posted up a bunch of info i collected from running the td05/7cm and td06 in 7cm and 6cm housings on another forum. There were times were I ran 2 of the combos back to back on the same day. I logged the pressure ratio from my intake and exhaust manifold with a zt2. Basically, what I learned was that the mitsu housings SUCK even worse than i imagined. The td06 is definatly worth it, I notice almost no difference in spool. Really, the td06/6cm is the hot ticket in my opinion. The car is a blast with it. You'll find a lot of people on the forums saying the 20g is there favorite street turbo,or they miss their 20g when they went bigger. and let me say at 28+psi with td06/6cm the car is a riot.Tdo6/7cm still spools great though. I think it still spools like 16g basically. I run 32 psi but it drops off to about 27-28 by 6800 or so. Its really amazing that such a small turbo with such a crappy exhaust setup performs so well.

Since I am FWD/auto I just want something that gives me the extra umphh on the top with a stock turbine housing. I do love the "hit" of the 05 turbine but I bet my trans doesn't.

This means that you definatly need the 06H. The "hit" is cool when you have an AWD that has traction. Not having the hit will help your traction and help keep your tire bill lower.

We switched from a clipped TD05H to a TD06H wheel on a 20g on a friend's setup awhile ago, and it definitely gained a bit of top end pull. It still had the same insane hit down low, too.

I was about to ask this but you already answered my question. I do have a clipped turbine just not sure of the degree of the clip. It was the last of my choices though.

i have tried 20g in every configuration as well.
the 20g and 18g with 06H in 6cm housing is my favourite as well.
it just rips with power and response. I recommend getting the bigger thrust setup. do it right the first time.

The 20g is a fresh rebuild with a larger thrust collar, extra oiling hole on the thrust plate and better journal bearings. It just needs to be rebalanced before I run it this summer. The 6cm/06H combo sounds great but doesn't the small housing choke flow up top? I bet spool is stupid fast in that turbine housing though.

is the 6cm more restrictive than a 7cm? of course it is. just as a 7cm is more restrictive than an 8cm. yet 99% use a 7cm before an 8cm because its better houisng to use in most instances. this is no different. the 6cm works better in my opinion. and I have tried both. so you heard it from two people that have tried both and both like the 6cm. what more do you want? maybe you should try both yourself and form your own opinion?

I was reading your posts from some years ago and I thank you for the input. As you can tell not many people have gone this route so this is why I asked. I don't have a spare 6cm housing to use so I have to go with what I got and hence why I asked this question. I think I am gonna do it.

I didnt have the luxury of being able to get a 7cm housing when i got my Frank 1 from a friend, but i did have the luxury of being really good at porting, and could get my 6cm flowing like a 7cm with the quicker spool. I posted elsewhere that with the 10 degree clip i could still get full boost by 3700 (18psi on pump) with the 6cm housing from my original 14b. If i do get to upgrade the exhaust side and have it rebuilt, i do have a 7cm housing that i will use because of the more restrictive TD-06H wheel i would use.

Its amazing that people would 'throw' away their 14b's for $50 complete and sometimes with an O2 sensor on them, and now they want $150+ for a rebuild-able core just about.

You do know that porting a turbine housing doesn't do shit for the overall flow it's capable of? The total mass flow is determined by the interface between the turbine wheel and the nozzle. Neither of which are touched by porting.

I'm also getting the impression that you thing a TDO6H wheel is more restictive than a Clipped TDO5H wheel. You couldn't be more wrong.

By the way, 18psi by 3700 for a turbo that might make 400whp on a good day is slow as balls.

you can easily change the nozzle by porting. on 6cm this is done by rounding the sharp corner leading into the turbine wheel. (entire circumference) but be very careful how round you make it. i did two. one performed like 7cm. the other was laggier and what i considered ruined. there is no way to get the nozzle velocity back once the material removed.

I cant really stress the importance of how little material needs to come off that corner. It has a huge effect on performance of the housing.

That seems like really slow spool to me as well. With the tdo6h wheel, the 20g is still connected to your right foot. I build 25+ psi really close to 3000rpm. Maybe 3200 or so. with the td06 wheel, it takes a second to go form vacuum to maybe 5psi and then it just buries my 30psi gauge in a split second. I run 32psi and drop off to 27-28psi by redline with 22psi springs in my tial 38. I am hoping to go to a spring combo that nets 27-28psi and hold 30+ to redline.

BTW, if you are doing td06/6cm i think it is pretty important to use a really good 6cm housing. You need to be able to port the shit out of it including in the volute. After logging backpressure:boost pressure, on all the exhaust combos, I just feel that the 6cm has better architecture than the 7cm housing. They all kind of suck though. I really want to switch to t3 and use the 12cm t3 housing. I love the 20g. I was expecting to be able to go to 25psi or so on pump. I had no clue how far this little turbo would go with a really good custom intercooler setup on pump. I've never used a 50 trim, but I cannot imagine that a quicker spooling 400hp turbo exists. I'm sure I would even have better results if I switched from a ported 2g manifold to something better.

I am interested in this as well. If I could ever find a 6cm housing in good shape(which is getting damn near impossible) I would like to test the results myself.

the setups i built were internally gated. the 6cm were not that great of shape. two large cracks through the WG seat. and many cracks at turbine input. as long as cracks are not leaking to atmosphere its all good. small cracks at wastegate hole dont adversely affect spool. only curbside appeal.

I too have been experimenting with turbine housings and various Mitsu compressor wheels for a long time. Also like the 6 cm housing. Have one housing that came NEW on my 93 TSI AWD. Its been on a 92 Laser AWD, 90 Laser FWD. Galant VR4. And now a 94 TSI AWD since I got back into DSMs again. It is is gutted. I cut so much out of the inside. The area people say don't grind too much off of. See if I can find pics of the inside to post up. Yes the boost comes on a bit later like this. But hits like a freighttrain. Running an OLD BR O2 housing with an HKS gate. Circa 1995. FP cast manifold. Earlier setups used an Early Archer Racing header.
Never did like the 7 cm housing regardless of how it was ported. Internal, external. Couldn't really tell any difference up top over this 6 cm. Didn't own the dyno either back then to do any real testing.
Currently its on an EVO3 16g with an unclipped TD05 turbine wheel. Same HKS gate/FP manifold setup. Would like to try a 10-15 deg clipped wheel on this setup. As that is what ymy original 93 had with a Big16g. Ran 11's on a stock motor on pump gas, full weight with a sidemount, VPC and Denso pump on stock injectors.
Now look whats available today. LOL

Here is a dyno graph of the 6 cm housing on the EVO 16g, same above setup.
Old Alamo sidemount with a Griffin core. 2-2.25 inch lower pipe and 2.5 inch upper. EVO 9 pistons and rods. Ported 1g head and old Crane 264 cams. Supertech valves. 168k orig block. Single walbro with relay and 660ND inj on E85 with an old HKS VPC/GCC and TMO chip ECU. Its out of fuel.

On a small 16 all else the same it made 340/340 hp/tq on 26 psi.

Just put an orig BR FMIC on. 720 ND. Lean and makes roughly the same power but way better IAT on the street obviously.

Clipping hurts spool in favor of flowing more. Do you know how to do a spool test? With the same housing and a 14b i could hit 18psi by 2800ish.

The Frank 1 had a T04E 46 comp and TD-05H ex wheel.

Ok. I have picked up a 6cm housing for $30. Its completely stock unported. It has a crack near the WG hole and appears to go through the housing near the inlet. But I honestly think its very much useable. I see all you guys that have done the 6cm swap are AWD. I am FWD and do not wanna break the tires loose everytime I hit the throttle or do you guys think it wouldn't be that much of a difference from my original plans for 7cm. Maybe I should just do both...:hmm:
Galant665 how did it run on your Laser FWD??
