hi all i just recently picked up a 98 gst 5 speed (was told it was a gsx) found out otherwise when i loaded it on the trailer:banghead:. the turbo was off of car when i picked it up....i bought a new turbo for it but i have never had a turbo car before. (i had a 94 z28 when i got this). The car is in great shape and well taken care of, it has front mount intercooler, turbo xs boost controller, cai, short throw shifter, full 3 inch exhaust(supposedly borla),megan racing front and rear strut braces. The previous owner said it had a forged bottom end but i have no way to tell...as well as a turbo timer. New to the eclipse and turbo cars any and all help and advise to re installing the turbo and general info would be greatly appreciated! looking forward to having fun with this car and learning all i can from this site...i will upload pics when i can.

First off, welcome! Check out the tech section or vfaq.com for many tutorials. Also use the search function as much as possible, many question you will run into have probably been asked.

Congrats on the purchase. I'll be anxious to see those pics when they are up. In being new to DSM as well I've found the best route to start and follow is the free mod list. Because I've come to find when taking on someone else's car, it's easy to find how much general little maintanence they did NOT do. So start on making it a reliable car before a fast one. Just my opinion and the direction I'm going though. Best of luck and hopefully it does not give you too many headaches.

UPDATE! got the car running and everything checks out great im in love! the car pulls hard and sounds great. its a blast to drive. its pushing 15 psi i dont know if i should tone it down a bit though.

Congrats on the purchase!!!

Now, as to your comment about the forged internals, I'd be careful. If he told you it was a GSX and you ended up with a GST then theres a good chance the internals are just factory. He may have just not known, but he could've B.S.'d you as well, unfortunately it's just to hard to tell. I would treat it as stock until you tear it down for an overhaul or an upgrade. As for boosting to 15psi if you have the proper fuel upgrades and a turbo thats right for what mods that are on the car now you won't have an issue running that boost pressure just make sure your not leaning out at W.O.T. and you should be fine.

If you don't have one snag up an a/f ratio gauge, it won't be perfectly accurate unless you spend some dough, but any information is better than none at all when it comes to afr's. I used to run EGT and AFR to kind of check against one another when I couldn't afford a good wide band 02 and gauge from AEM and what not.

Have fun with your first turbo car you may not ever go without one from this point on...LOL

Sounds like a nice purchase. Take some time and do some searching on this site. You will find all of the answers you need. When I first joined I didn't know the first thing about turbocharged cars. Now look at me, I just finished a complete rebuild on my TSI AWD. I was able to find out everything I needed to know aboutthem right here.

Thanks to everyones coments .....and I don't think im turning back anytime soon. The car has new plugs and wires and I changed all fluids.....its good and solid. I plan to drive it and learn as much as I can then upgrade more in the future when im ready. Ill try to get picks up.
