You do not adjust anything at the cam gears. When strictly follow the timing marks on the crank, oil pump, and cam gears when installing the timing belt.

Base idle timing is done by simply grounding out the connector that is located towards the top of the firewall. Black 2 prong female connector on the passenger side. Or simply select ground timing if you have Link. After this you will loosen the nuts on the CAS so it can be rotated by hand.

Start the car.
Connect the timing gun to the #1 cylinder spark plug.
Point it downward towards the Crank pulley, there is a notch in it for setting timing. It helps to put a little whiteout on it to increase visibility.
Rotate the CAS either direction to advance or retard base idle timing.
Set it so the mark lights up at 5 BTDC, as is marked on the timing cover.

Thanks for the fast response Villarrs.
Im following the camgear method because i dont have a timing belt cover.
From the guide, i got everything aligned crank mark, oilpump mark, and gears. It tookme several hours to have everything on marks.

With car warm and pin grounded to firewall (i have ecmlink anyway),timing light needs to be set to 5 or 10? in some guides says 5 in others says 10??

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking.:hmm: Are you asking how to check your mechanical timing, or are you trying to set base timing? I showed you how to set the base timing, so you must be trying to check the mechanical timing.

To check the mechanical timing do this. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...-1g-2g-quick-timing-belt-alignment-check.html

Mechanical timing was done in the engine, so im asking for base timing, but without a lower timing belt cover, i'm forced to use the marks in the camgears method. I know timing marks and lower cover needs set to 5* but using the camgear method?
my confusion comes from various posts claiming for 5 * others for 10*.

I'll be using 5* at gears for now and hopes runs fine.......:hmm:

For reference I used this method and set my timing light at 5* advanced then adjusted the CAS accordingly. If you look at the post referencing the 10* advance comment, you'll see the person who posted that remark also linked back to the how-to in the tech section which again recommends using the 5* advance method. I'm just going to assume (dangerous word there) that they mistakenly typed 10* and meant 5*. Hope that helps you out a bit but you should really invest in a lower timing belt cover before some road debris makes its way into your timing belt.

PM Stangmurdera from Miller Import Parts and see if he can get you one. They are a site vendor and I had a very good buying experience using them when sourcing used parts to finish my car.
