How to: ?Go dark? on Jan 18 to fight SOPA/PIPA | Digg Technology

Forum sites like ours will be in great danger of getting shut down if you guys don't contact your state rep and tell them to vote against SOPA and PIPA. Hopefully the typical American trend of inaction doesn't kill the way we all use the web. The large corporations are about to dictate what you can and cannot view online, all in a big power grab fueled by profits. Write a letter folks. Do it quick.

Why will sites like ours be targets for the big corporations? Read that article. It says that any sites that even link to sites which have been accused of copyright infringement can be shut down. That makes every forum site, blog, and any other site that allows user contributed content fair game. As well as sites like eBay, Wikipedia, Craigslist, YouTube, etc. There's a reason all the big websites are strongly opposed to these bills. This is a BIG deal folks. Only you can help stop it.

Life as you know it on the web will change drastically. Please take action people. Good resources will go away overnight once the big corporations get this law implemented. Write a letter to your state representative.

How to find out who your representative is - enter your zip code on this page:
https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml

Google who your state Senator is, if you don't know. Send them the same letter. I've written letters to mine already. The bills should not allow sites to be shut down without due process - the onus should be on the accuser to prove their case, not the defendant to prove their innocence while the site is shut down. The smaller sites will have no recourse to prove their innocence. Forum sites will be the big losers in all of this.

As the saying goes, you don't know the value of what you have until you loose it.
I hope that all the DSMtuners members will see this and add their voices to stop such legislation before it is too late!

That's some bull stuff, guess this really is not a fee country. Next thing you know they will be telling us what we can and can't eat or drink.

Craigslist posted something about this on the home page, I was wondering what it was all about

It's because Craigslist could easily be targeted and shut down if either bill passes. Imagine life without Craigslist, eBay, Youtube, or even a smaller site like DSMtuners.

If the government wants to shut down forums, blogs whatever....There is going to be a huge lawsuit...And the violation of americans first amendment rights....

I don't see it sticking..

It's not the government that wants to do it, it's the corporations who want to protect profits that are behind this. They're simply using Congress to pass a law that will allow them to force websites to shut down in the name of copyright infringement and online piracy. And though it makes sense to allow companies to protect their intellectual property, these bills grant them way too much power. A simple accusation can result in a site being shut down. And any links pointing to a blacklisted site on our site could result in our site being shut down. In typical Washington fashion, most the state representatives are standing on the side of their lobbyists. It removes due process from the equation and gives all the power to the corporations with the big money.

In typical Washington fashion, most the state representatives are standing on the side of their lobbyists. I truly believe it will completely reshape the way information is shared and business is conducted online in a bad way. If you are seen as a threat to a big corporation in any way, they will be able to shut you down immediately. And the burden will be on you to prove that you are not a threat to their profits - how fat is your wallet?

Take a look at how many politicians are supporting these bills - the majority are:
http://projects.propublica.org/sopa/

Unless people speak up, they won't change their position on these bills. Don't just stand by and let them pass, assuming they won't.

Well..Untill corperations are not people anymore..Any can't use their money to buy stuff like this..Then we as actual people, may get some rights back...

Just another reason for me to hate Comcast and Walmart.

If that gets passed, they would be screwing themselves and every little guy over. More and more the US is turning to shi*

Honestly I hope this stuff is just a scare.

Look at Sony, supporting the greedy side of it after that huge Credit Card incident.

Sent emails to my representatives weeks ago. I encourage all of you to do the same.

Signed and letters sent! Besides if SOPA/PIPA passes whats next? Yeah piracy is an issue but not to be loosely interpeted by our government and then misused to no end....

I'm glad to see this posted. I've been informing everyone possible. Emailed Sen. Sherrod Brown.

Don't Tread On Me.

My Hero's. Only if I had the skills I would join the cause LOL. You can not arrest an idea. Expect Us!
Anonymous: Message to SONY on SOPA - YouTube
Anonymous: SOPA passed. We are displeased. - YouTube

Just because you don't currently possess the 'skills' doesn't mean you can't be helpful to the cause. Sign the petition, notify your state representative, educate your friends and family or anyone who will listen. Seriously the more people we tell about SOPA/PIPA, the better the chance we have at beating this legislative abomination.

:aha:
If you would like to gain some 'skills', you can 'train up' at hackthissite.org.

I don't know what makes me more mad, SOPA, or Anonymous.

I guess I'm too much of an oldf4g but the real anonymous does not care about anything. This activist internet gang is such a joke.

Let's not have any script-kiddy talk about "hacking" in here either.
