Post up your most recent welding pics/beads/projects.

I had a spare 3" vband and 3" 90* SS pipe and a friend wanted a turndown for his s2k. I never tried SS on my miller but figured I would give it a shot. Turned out rather well, here is the shot of the best welds on it. I didn't use a heatsink because I had to weld it in an awkward position so one side of it warped, but hardly like 1/32" of an inch.

I set the welder to max 60amps and just kind of kept on it almost full throttle. 15ish cfh, orange 1/16th tungsten.

Here's two of mine. First one was making some cleats to use as tie down points and second (sorry for pic quality) added the center bung for a friends dry sump oil pan setup. I don't have any of my stainless pictures or I'd upload some of them also.

The last one is some stainless i didwith stick welding using the 308rod

Fantastic.
Boostdtsi; is that fusion welded? It's amazing.
99gst_racer; that right there is why I have no qualms about buying a tubular rear subframe from you. Beautiful!

Here's mine:

=(((((((((((((()=

I kid!

Great work from all of you. Wish I could get into welding myself!

Do it. You can get a nice mig with gas for less than 500 and make some pretty nice looking welds with lots of practice. I've seen MIG welds that look like tigs from the pros.

Do you always use a 1/16" tungsten on thin SS? I've been rocking a red on mine.
I have 1/16th and 3/32 and just changed over to 1/16th. Not sure when I would need 3/32 or larger, probably when I'm at more than 100amps I would assume, but i'm just guessing here. That pipe was actually pretty damn thick, I'll measure it when I get home.
I have always used red and it works great, but I want to get away from the radioactive crap so I am trying out some orange.

Yes, don't use 1/16 over 100 amps. It will explode! Burnt the crap out of me once. Lol

Here are a couple of mine on some mild steel. These are both oxyacetylene welds that I did in my welding class. That's the only kind of welding I know how to do LOL. I'm really hoping to find a cheap tig welder on craigslist so I can buy it and start practicing and maybe even getting a little money out of it too. I would love to make my own exhaust manifold and maybe even work on aluminum too.

So, is it easier to control the heat and the puddle with a 1/16" tungsten? I've been using 3/32" only, but I might have to run down to my local supply place and pick up a pack of 1/16" tungstens too. What size cup did you use in that first pic?

I'm not sure what your budget is, but there's a pretty good deal on a Miller on eBay right now. It's an EconoTig. Comes with the torch, pedal, work clamp and cable, cart, and a 125 cf bottle. All for $1000. I planned to pick it up until I found an inverter box much closer to home.

I feel the smaller the tungsten the smaller the hot spot so it's easier to control. I also use a gas lens which I love with I think a #7 cup
I found weldcraft tungsten pretty cheap on ebay

Remember I'm still new at this so this is just my own personal experience.

Well that is good to know. What's the limit of 3/32?

That's right around my price range but I'd rather stick to something local just so I can try it out before I actually decide to buy it. And plus I have to wait a couple weeks to save up the money haha

Nah bro its not fusion welded im not a fan of tht as it doesnt make a strong weld, thats y the make fillers to be stronger than th metal thats alredy present there if done correctly. Heres another piece i used 1/8" filler and notice how its more convex and thats how its supposed to look according to the welding code we abide by, for pipe welding i always walk the cup besides the rootpass, i alwaysfreehand that. Idk why it wont let me post the pic of the one i used the 1/8" filler

It depends on a few things in my mind.
Budget being the biggest factor.
What you want to do. If aluminum add a few hundred
110v or 220v? While 220v is ideal, not everyone has access to one where they want it, like me, so i had to be sure to get a machine that can go 110 and 220.
Don't forget to add the price of gloves, rod, helmet (can be pricey), metal to build yourself a work station etc.
Also consider some come with foot control and some don't.
The eastwood tig seems to do it all for cheap but I haven't found anyone that has it yet. So I would really like to see how it performs.

Well that is good to know. What's the limit of 3/32?

The size of your tungsten really doesn't have much to do with how focused the energy is. It has more to do with how much amperage it can take. Energy focus would be controlled by how your tungsten is ground. Long taper to a point will give a wider weld bead and less penetration, but better arc starting and a more stable arc. A blunt end will result in a narrower weld bead, deeper penetration, and potential arc straying issues.

3/32 is roughly 225 amps max.

first time picking up a alum, mig welder! LOL bit sketchy but still good for my first time, wish i could figure out the tig, cant even get a puddle started haha

I dont know if I'm allowed to ask this here or not, but I though since its roughly the same topic I'd refrain from starting a new thread and just ask my question here.

I was just wondering what welder I should pick up both are Lincoln electric welders I cant decide between the 140T or the SP-180T both are migs. What I'll be using it for is body work and frame work but I want it to be big enough to handle some diversity, But I only have the standard 120 volt sockets. thanks in advance

140 is 115v and anything more for a mig is going to be a 220/230

Here a couple mig welds on 1/4" thick pipe/plate to make ballards to hold up sign poles for my side business.

I have not cleaned the slag for these pics (as you noticed LOL)

I finally feel like I'm getting a hang of aluminum.
I even felt confident enough to weld up the turbo coolant line on my thermostat.
Let me know what you guys think.

Welding from last night. I bought a bunch of material today, so I'll be out welding in the garage all night tonight.
