So I've done numerous audio installs but this one has me confounded. Everybody is telling me that I have to use this metra kit with the driver information center 05-08 PONTIAC G6 STEREO INSTALL DASH KIT COMBO 99-3303 - eBay (item 360246659668 end time Feb-17-11 09:15:28 PST)

Problem is I don't want to spend that much plus the headunit when I'm not sure how long I'll keep the car. From what I understand if I use anything else I lose the dic..which don't tell me much anyways. I can calculate my fuel and keep up with oil changes without that crap. So my question is; can I use this kit Stereo Radio install Mount Dash Kit +Wire Harness Plug - eBay (item 390283207583 end time Feb-23-11 06:16:25 PST)

If so, what else would I need? I think maybe a switched 12v power source..could I just use a togle switch for this? Anyone with experience with this type of car, please shed some light on this. Thanks.

Without the DIC adapter you will lose all of the DIC visuals, dummy light and door chime. Other than that the new radio will work and the rest of the car will too. I've used plenty of those cheaper aftermarket radio adapters on new and old cars ranging from all makes. They work perfectly but sometimes one may need a little trimming or something.

Ya, I have done many installs in my own vehicles and others.
Never paid more then 20$ for a install kit, Then again mine never had a screen either.

What is that screen for?

You will probably need that because they run all the sensor warning sounds and stuff though the stereo, so the extra cost covers the unit that allows everything to work. Had to do the same for my 2001 Grand Am

The screen is for all of his levels. on the G6 the fuel level, oil level, dummy light, door chime yada yada id run throught the factory headunit. Not many aftermarket headunits hace the DIC feature. The small screen takes over for the DIC and he can see all of his fluid levels and what not with an aftermarket sterio
