I am being offered a transmision, and I would like to know if there is more than one kind of tranny for the 1G, and if there is, how can I know wich one is it.

The transmission I am being sold is already out of the car, but mine stills on the car and I don't have the time to remove it by now.

Incorrect. Early 1Gs ('90 mostly) came with a 22-spline transmission while the later 1Gs and 2Gs came with a 23-spline transmission.

The spline count refers to the number of splines on the output shaft that drives the transfer case; consequently, the transfer cases will be different as well. The only way to check which you have in this instance is, unfortunately, to remove the transfer case and count the splines.

well a 22 spline tcase wont fit a 23 spline trans and vise versa

It's really a shot in the dark since swapping output shafts is possible and, apparently, a pretty simple and popular procedure.

Here's what CAPS lists as the "differentiation" and what I would assume to be the 22-spline/23-spline cutoff date in the USA. Know that the dates are not absolute as people have been known to find 22-spline transmissions in later year vehicles, but the transmission codes should be a pretty accurate indicator. Also, the part numbers listed are transmission + transfer case assemblies:

From 1989.03.1 Up to 1990.06.1 : P/N -- MD995573 ... W5M332NPZS ... 22-spline
From 1990.06.2 Up to 1994.02.3 : P/N -- MD995651 ... W5M332NPXV ... 23-spline

In Europe, neither of those transmission codes exist. CAPS shows there is only one code available for 1G AWD cars: W5M332WPBV

I am fairly certain that is a 23-spline; it shares the same transfer case with many vehicles that use a W5M31 manual transmission code, also 23-spline.

So i shoukld look in my tranny for the code MD995651 or MD995651 ?

My car is US imported in 94, manufactured in 92. My car has LSD, it's only rear LSD or 3 diff LSD?

Should I retrive something in my old tranny or not? I've readed something about swapping the shafts of the transmission, didn't look too hard to do.

Where is the number on my transmision?

Sorry for the confusion, the MD###### numbers are OEM part numbers for dealership reference. The code you want to look for should be on the outside casing engraved like in the upper left portion of this photo, straight left from the top breather (black rubber thing):

You must be logged in to view this image or video.

You will be looking for any one of the following assuming it is a 1G DSM transmission:
W5M332NPZS
W5M332NPXV
W5M332WPBV

The first one should be a 22-spline, the other two should be 23-spline. Again, this is also assuming the output shafts have never been changed.

KW5M332NPXV, why the K in front?

It is very safe to assume that it is a 23-spline. Most people swap their 22-spline to a 23-spline, not the other way around. Every DSM transmission I've seen has the "K", though I'm not certain why. It does not have any bearing over the "W5M332NPXV", though, which is originally a 23-spline unit.

So the transmission that you are being offered should also be W5M332NPXV or W5M332WPBV. It could also be a W5M332NPZS with a 23-spline output shaft swapped in, but you would need to count the splines on the shaft to make sure.

btw, you can see my bell had several injuries in the past.

It looks like it has certainly seen better days! :p

Good luck with everything!

Not a very complete list if he's only got 1 of the 3 serial numbers/codes I listed, but that is good info to have and certainly to link to for future searches.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure. I've been researching to find some meaning in all that information, but each website seems to have the same, unhelpful information regarding the gear ratios. However, I did find these links suggesting that the W5M332WQNK transmission will not work as a direct drop-in replacement but can be made to work by switching other components:

Sorry I cannot be of anymore help. Good luck with whatever you choose to do!
