OK, here is my delima... I bought this tranny form a guy who scam me along time ago. This same tranny i send to jack transmission to have it rebuild to stage 3 and cryoed. But not knowing what i have they(jacks) rebuild it and send it back to me in brand new paint...

The tranny is now in the car. i came to curiosity and decided to check the transmission Vin and find out what exactly i have. well guess what... its evo3 tranny! i refused to believe it so i check with several other sources but again they confirmed my findings. I talk to twicks69 and he help me id my tranny and again its evo3. He told me what need to be done and was a great help.

I emailed jack like 5,6 times/days and finally got an answer. He told me to look at his videos on how to identified what year of tranny i have. Thants a good way to look at it if you have the tranny out but, what about if its in the car already? what can i do to look at it without having to take the tranny out to save money? should i pull the tranny apart like changing the clutch and look at it form that way?

i just don't know what to do. its been since summer the car been sitting. i am afraid to drive it. i don't have cash right now ### i am in school and trying to save money to do something about it. It would of been great if Jack would let his customer know what they have because sometimes we normal people don't know what we have. I need to know what other ways i can check the tranny for different output gears without taking the tranny all the way out of the car. Here is a video of him showing how you can check when the tranny is out... but i need to find other ways i can check to save money at the shop...Please help, from all the transmission gurus out there... thank you..

What is the big deal with knowing what the year is? You already k ow its from an evo III so just let it be...

Raise your car completley onto jackstands. Somehow lock both passenger side tires. Put your car into 5th gear without running. Mark both drivers side tires at the 12 o'clock position, and then rotate either drivers side tire and make sure the marks on both the drivers side tires stay the same.

Im pretty sure this will work unless the viscous coupler starts to slip, but there isnt much resistance in the driveline when the car is in the air.

I know its an evo3, but jack said he dose not send out trannies that won't work with the U.S cars. He advised me to make sure it is the same output gears for the transfer case and rear end because there are differences among us cars. like old vs new... that's what i am trying to figure out. Not, me in question about what i have. I know its evo3. Again, this is the same tranny i send it to jack to have it stage 3 rebuild with cryoed. He fail to notified me what i have before the rebuild and after the rebuild. Now this same tranny is sitting in the car looking...well... "pretty". I just don't want to risk driving it and shredding the rear end and everything underneath. I drove it couple time without any noise but still,.. its good to know what all I've got("output gear wise"). Please help...

thank for the help bro. yeah, i was wondering the same thing about the viscous diffs. i don't know how well it will work because they will start to slip when you lift it up the ground.

i was thinking today, what if i can take the transfer case out, then mark the output shaft(transfer case) form the transmission. somehow mark the tranny out put shaft(to the engine). Rotate the front wheels and watch the tranny and transfer case out put shaft spin and see where they end up after a certain number of revolutions. just like what the video said...ofcourse the car will be up in the air. i don't know if i can do it this way put, its just a thought...please help!

i have done business with jacks transmissions and everybody in his shop seemed very reliable and very knowledgeable. when you sent the tranny to him did you ask for him to verify what it was before he rebuilt it for you?

Bro, look if you like him that's great. i got nothing to say about that man and his business because this isn't place to discuss. But i spend $3000 on this tranny and at least he could of contact me and say something about my tranny being evo3. He could of said look what we got here..oh i don't have to do much to rebuild it. Let me contact him and see if he know what he's got.

But, lets get away form this subject... My concerned now is trying to figure out what the heck the output pinion gears is in the car right now and i don't have money to pay expensive shop to take the tranny out again. I am gonna send jack another email and see what he suggest i do.

Again i just want everyone who respond to my crisis to know i thank you. I don't know everything about my car and i would be appreciated on any information you could give. I know there will be good and bad comments out there but i am will to take it as a positive criticism in order to learn. But please take it easy on me i beg you....

Dude it sucks you got scammed. But, How is Jack supposed to know what your intentions where with the trans? Did you tell him it was goin in a 2g? Probably not.
It's your responsibility to know what transmission you have, And if it's compatible with the car it's goin in. Not Jacks.
If I where you I'd see if the Revolutions are the same. If not, I'd be lookin for a Buyer.

Yes i did tell him and i requested "its going in a 2g" i stated 1995 "awd premium rebuild with 'cryo treated gears" please... i send him a bank check with the tranny. Mann i am just looking for solution to this problem, the tranny is in the car. i can't turn back time. yeah, i just need to check the tranny my self. i can't relied on a business to pay attention to details. Look i am not mad a jack, it my fault for not checking before i put the tranny in. i can't depend/trust anybody but my self. I just hope he can give me expert opinion on how i can check the pinion gears thats already in the car...i just send him(jack) email so hopefully i can get something back.

Jack, if you are looking at this treat/post please give me your expert solution. its my fault for not checking the tranny before i put my tranny in the car. thanks.

Here's what i think i should do....

Put the car on the lift and put it in fifth gear. Take the transfer case out and mark the T-case output and front axle output, then rotate both front wheel to some number of revolutions. After that, check and see where the mark line up between the the two outputs. Will this method give me a good indication of what output pinion gear i have in the tranny? if the marks line up to the original marks, then its the same output gear right?

Please give me a opinion on this Dsm gurus.. and thank you..

OK if Jack said that he doesnt send out a tranny that wont work in a US car HE should know what he installed as the evo3 ring and pinion front shaft wont work in a dsm. I have an evo3 tranny and it uses a 97-99 tcase. (ratio is the same) but as I said he would have had to of changed it as this will NOT work in any year dsm.

Did you send your tranny to jack? If you did, did he automatically convert them for you?

no, mine is still all jdmevo3 spec. I am hoping to find a rearend. but he should know what was in it. as you CANNOT use the stock evo3 front ring and output shaft/pinion shaft in a dsm.

Why not just get under the car yourself and pull the transmission. It will cost you one day of work and you can know for sure.

Yeah i would but, i don't know how to, and don't have all the tooling if i wanted to. i already talk to several shops that do just transmissions and been getting a quote on prices. Now i just got to come up with money and time... Holiday break is coming and i should have time. i am gonna have them drop the T case first and rotate the front wheels. To see if the t case out put and front axles outputs line up. if not drop the tranny and see about putting/swapping to u.s dsm pinion gears. thats the plan now...

Just want to give an update on the progress. so i finally find the time to check the gear ratio in the transmission and the verdict is.... its an earlier transmission gears (the 58 tooth). watched the front axle output and let it turned for 5 times and after that i went back and looked at the transfer case marks and they do not line up. which indicates its a 58 tooth gears. if they would have lined up after the fifth revolution on transfer case it would of been the 57 tooth gears in the ring and pinion. since i have the 95 awd i needed the 58 tooth gears and mark that don't line up on the tc which indicates i have the right ratio.

The way i do this don't required me to drop the transmission...and heres how i did it just in case anybody have the same issues with their transmission.

1. Jack the car up (both the front wheels off the ground).

2. I dropped both front axles.

3. drop the transfer case.

4. mark the front axle seal and gear inside. and then mark the tc seal and gears shaft.

5. Put the transmission in 5th gear.

6. with the mpi and fuel pump disconnected, i crank the car with the starter (you are gonna need somebody to do this with. one to crank the starter and one to look at the revolutions under the car).

7. get underneath the car and look and see how many revolutions it have turned.

But, be careful and safety is a first priority. Do at your own risk. make sure the car is secure enough when doing this. This process allowed me to look at the gears without having to drop the transmission.

I hope this helps for everybody who is in the same situation.

Congrats man on figuring this out and sharing your findings :) Glad to hear you have the right gear ratio too!
