Hello tuners,

I have a problem when I turn very slowly in any direction it makes a loud thumping sound, no click but thump thump thump coming from either the front right side area or center area. But no sound when going straight. So I thought it would be the axles also the driver side had a torn CV boot so I rebuilt the axles on both sides and I installed them today and everything bolted down and then went for a drive still making the sound.

So I tried listening on where it was making the noise by putting it in neutral with the engine off and the wheel turned to one side all the way and it seems like it is coming from my transfer case. I jacked up the front side and turned the wheels and rotated the tires and there is no sounde so it only makes a sound when it is on the ground. I just want to know if this is the problem or please let me know what you guys think.

thanks in advance

It makes the noise when the car is not moving? Have you check tie rods inners and outers? Check ball joints. Also check hub bearings. Could also be the rack.

Car still makes noise when I have the engine off but jus pusing it and turning it makes the nise. For sure there is no play in the tie rods so they are fine and the ball joints are worn but still good. Hub bearings should make a noise while driving straight or anytime I move the car but the sound is only when I make slow turns.
Thanks

If there is no front end play and the ball joints and wheel bearings are good then I would would look at the cv shafts considering that you just messed with them.

How can I mess them up, is there a possible way I can bolt them up fine and there still is a problem?
I followed the directions in the book/manual and use dsmtuners article as a reference. And it was not hard to do.
But is there a possible way that the transfer case is bad? I just drained the oil from the transfer case there was less than 1/4 of a quart that drained.

sounds like your strut mounts went bad....check those out

The strut mounts looks good but hearing the noise in the center on the bottom of the engine bay.
Thanks for the advice

Still need more help on figuring out the noise...

I was just saying to look at the cv shafts again and just double check to make sure everything was fine. Its hard to mess them up and they usually don't make noise. The transfer case takes 0.5 quarts. Re-fill the transfer case and see if it changes anything.

Cool I did double check everything and to me it looks good to me.
That was my next step was to fill up and see what happens hopefully it fixes it self but being a DSM probably not LOL... Going to do that tomorrow if not need a transfer case ASAP... Anyone have one for cheap if it does it tomorrow.

thanks

I remember seeing some in the classified for pretty cheap. Otherwise someone like dsm graveyard could probably hook you up without breaking the bank. Keep us updated on what you find out tomorrow. Interested to see what happens!

Yes I will let you know what happens hoping for the best if not time to buy a transfer case. Will start looking in the classifieds for a 91-96 transfer case 23-spline.

How much is it to rebuild a transfer case? Just wondering.
thanks

So I fill it up with 75W90 and it still does it I guess time to buy a transfer case and hopefully that will solve my problem. And this started after a week after installed a built 1G head with cyclone manifold, so now my talon is down again until I get a transfer case.

I dont see how the problem could be related to the transfer case. It is not affected by turning at all...

That is true but what else can the noise be if it is coming in the center area where the transfer case is. Unless the noise is coming from the transmission, is that a possibility too?

Have you tryed driving it at all?

I tried driving the talon but when getting out of my driveway the noise is very unbearable, no grinding just clunk clunk clunk when I turn and seems normal going stright.

Please help me can it be the transmission or transfer case or is it a totally different problem.

Well, it doesnt make sense for it to be the transmission or transfer case if it still dos it with the engine off and the car not moving. My buddys 1Gb FWD talon does the same exact thing, all i can say from experience is that i had a few cars come in to our shop doing the same thing, on 1 it was the sway bar end link,on another it was the upper ball joint. The way we found it was we sprayed a certain part or joint with WD40 and turned the wheel, we just kept repeating this process untill the noise quieted significantly and checked out the last thing we sprayed. Its worked pretty wel for us so far and all it costs is a bit of WD. Good Luck

Ok so I pulled off the tranfer case and it looks and feels ok but then I started playing with the output shaft on my transmission that connects to my TC. It comes in and out like a testing a turbo for shaft play and the play is about less .25 inch on the output shaft. Is this normal? Could this make my car make that loud clund when I turn?

PLEASE HELP!!!

IF you get a tranny DONT GET USED! I've told people since I bought my tre stage 2 transmission dont buy used. In the long run ya it cost me $2200 but i know its not going to break and i know exactly how many miles are on it. Besides also counts as another part to tell people your car has :D

Ok so I removed my transfer case and held up my driveshaft with some cable and I pushed it in neutral and now there is no sound when I turn. Is it possible that my transfer case is the culprit?
I took apart the TC and seems like it is in good condition and there are no breaks in it. So can it be the TC or my center differential in my transmission making the clunking sound when I turn?

Please Tuners I need help to fix it, please!
Thanks

Well, if your center diff is whats making the noise then you probably have some bad shims in the tranny. Same goes for the TC. The diff should not move enough to make any noise. I dont know how much you know about the transmissions, but you can check the center diff while the tranny is still in the car. Just remove the outer case, and the center case and the differential should be easily visible. Its just held in with a C-clip.
