Biggest difference is the 90's have the factory oil cooler. The 90's also were the only year that all the awd's were equipped with a rear LSD as anti-lock brakes were not available. The front driveshaft yoke is also a different spline count on the 90's. Also, the 90's used different length shifter linkages.

ECUs are definitely different with a different pin layout.

I personally would stay away from a '90, but there are some that prefer them. One plus is if you get a '90 that's all original, you're guaranteed to have a 6-bolt under the hood....no guesswork like the '92 owners.

So is a 91 6 Bolt guaranteed then too?

also if the 91+ AWD didn't come with an LSD what'd they have instead?

The main differences
throttle body and TB sensors
coil packs
ECUs
Gauge cluster. I've read the 90s read 145mph (mine does) and 91-94 read 140mph but don't quote me on this as I've not noticed in person.
22 spline transfer case which in turn makes the transmissions different
CAS, yes you can swap to a later model
The oil filter housing and water pipe is different as the 90's have an oil cooler
The shifter base, cables, and bushing are different
The fuel rails are also slightly different if I remember right

I think thats about it but I may have missed some things

damn so I guess ill be selling my 91 eprom ecu LOL.. Just wondering if 90"s come eprom??

They did but they are super rare and any of them I've ever saw were way over priced. I'd keep the 91 eprom and read up on how to swap them out. It's not to difficult to swap it properly

Oh and with the 1gs if they had ABS then they did not have a factory LSD. If yours doesn't have ABS then odds are it had/has a LSD. My understanding is that the viberation of the LSD would irritate the exciter rings and it would act up.

The 91-94's do read to 140mph but has one more line after that which is 145. The 90's count in 5mph increments and uses that last line.

Differences:

-Throttle body and TB sensors
-Coil pack
-Power transistor
-ECU
-90s read 145mph
-22 spline output shaft in transmission
-22 spline all aluminum transfer case
-CAS
-The oil filter housing and water pipe is different as the 90's have an oil cooler
-The shifter base, cables, and giant horse dong shift knob
-The fuel rails are also slightly different
-Cruise control located where ABS module is on 91-94 dsm's
-Very slight difference in LICP location on SMIC
-Orientation of stock BOV (90's BOV is upright)

Most 1990's have eproms. I've never of heard of one without.

That's funny because I've never come across a 90 that had one and believe me I've searched every yard I could find for one. Maybe it's an East/West thing for eproms or something.

Anyway, codeofdastreets, it is possible to use the 91-94 ecu in the 90. Heres a few articles about the wring differences.

I don't think there was any year where all AWD cars got the rear LSD standard, 91 cars were limited to either ABS or the rear LSD. The ABS controller couldn't deal with the LSD, so it was either one or the other. That was fixed in the 92 models.

I had the ECU rebuilt in a 1990 TSi AWD for a customer of mine a couple summers ago. It was a numbers-matching ECU that wasn't switched (car was all stock), and it definitely wasn't an EPROM.

There are both EPROM and non-EPROM versions of 90 ECU's. It's hard to say what the mix was but it's true that good examples of either are getting hard to find due to the capacitors leaking and other failures over the years.

One other difference, there were no automatic turbo cars in 1990.

Some of you guys are screwing this up, 91's could also have the early trans with the 22 spline output shaft...
