I am going to be pulling the engine out of my 90 GSX this winter break and need some answers. I have pulled blocks before, but both of them already had the head off, so where would I connect the cherry picker to pull out my block with the head still attached? Should I remove the valve cover and attach somewhere there or what?

Pictures would be excellent. Please and thank you. :D

when i pulled my engine. i left the head on.. in my oppinion its easier..
There should be a place to attach one part of the chain by the fuel rail on far left. and the other connection is by the manifold.. but i wrapped the chain around my motor mount on the drive side..

worked just fine =) good luck!

Well if it is stock above the exhaust there is a metal piece there for a hook, and next too the throttle body should be another hook. For the cherry picker, but most people take those off hope this helps

Yes that would be it. I have also pulled engines by using the exhaust and intake manifold studs.

Use the Power steering bolt holes and AC holes on back of the engine block for one chain and put another on the transmission......I personally wouldnt put it on the Cyl. Head because its all aluminum and would be afraid it would damage it :hmm:

Edit::plus if you do it like that it keeps really steady when moving it and if you need to you can do work to it with it in the air...makes life so much easier

If you have the two stock brackets for the cherry picker thats going to be your best bet. Disconnect Ziplock/Label Remove hood Pop her out.... Now if you wan't the easy way for dirt and gravel areas. Skip the cherry picker and chain it to a back hoe :D

HAHAHA back hoe thats great sounds like something Ive had to do here in the NC mountains before ROFL

alright, a couple more questions. so I just attach hooks to the points where I am pulling the engine>
and how much weight should my hoist be able to lift? I don't want to drop a ton on a 2-ton hoist if a 1-ton hoist will work.

I just pulled mine a couple weeks ago and I used a tow strap (like 7 bucks) ### I didnt have a chain. I tied it to the drivers side motor mount (remove the whole motor mount from the car) and then I wrapped the strap around the flex plate and it came right out.

You shouldnt have any problems with a 1 ton puller if you are just pulling the engine. The engine doesnt weigh that much, but Ive seen cheep engine pullers (harbor freight) bust their welds well below their load capacity. If you pull the engine and transmission together, Id lean towards the two ton puller though.

I'll be pulling the engine and tranny together, but I ffigure if I leave it in the 1ton position it shoud work just fine right? I mean, there's now way that that can even come close to 2000 lbs...

I have a 2ton engine lift and i set it at 1/2 ton and pull the engine and trans at the same time. done it this way with a couple motor jobs and have never had a problem. I dont have an engine tilter so i just use a seatbelt to pick the motor and trans up with. It makes it a lot easier to tilt rather than a chain. If you need an idea of how to lift it just check out my pics in my profile.

UPDATE!!!
Alright. So the engine is out of the GSX and into the TSi and I have a few questions.

First, I can't get the damn driveshaft into the transfer case. The engine is bolted into the mounts, should I unbolt the mounts and lift it and try to squeeze it in? Or can I drop the t-case down and hook it up then reattach the t-case? I'm at a loss here.

Second, where do I refill the tranny and t-case fluid at? The pictures in the haynes manual are dogpoop

Third, When I tip my intercooler on the side a ton of liquid keeps spilling out. I don't think this is normal. (aftermarket no name intercooler BTW)

Any advice would be fantastic. THANKS!!

Ok Well first you have to put the drive shaft into the transfer case and then bolt it to the transmission.

Unless you have a water to air intercooler, which I seriously doubt, there should be no fluid inside it. post a picture just to be sure.

as for the filler plugs

DSM nOOb covered just about everything. With pictures, too! Except I'd like to know... what kind of liquid are you finding in your intercooler?

To tell you the truth, I have no idea. It is colorless and doesn't have a strong odor, I was thinking it was just water. But I am going to be out of town for work until monday when I will get back to this.
another quick question, what the heck are the black squishy plug things on the tcase and the tranny? They pop out if you pull hard enough?

And thanks for the help guys. I'll let you know how things go when I get back into town.

Those "black squishy plug things" in the transmission and the transfer case are just vent plugs. They are there to allow the pressure on the inside and the pressure on the outside to stay equal as well as to keep dirt from entering.:)

Oh. Sweet. I was messing with them when I had the engine out and wondered what in the heck they were. I won't be back to work on the car again until Monday, but I think the car should be running by work on tuesday night (if all goes well)

Oh yeah, and I guess the other thing is that I broke the bolt holding the speedo cable in the transmission...so...I ned to know what bolt size that is. If anyone knows that would be a HUGE help. Thanks

Just an update, ordered a new bolt from DSMgraveyard. So...yeah, got that problem solved. Got a brand new hallman pro boost controller, some ss valve cover bolts, and an EGR blockoff plate on the way. Needless to say I'm pretty excited for this thing to be running.

Quick question, car is almost back together. What kind of grase (if any) do I need to put on the splines of the driveshaft before I put it back into the transfer case? And transfer case back into the tranny? will the tranny fluid and xfer case fluid take care of the lubrication, or do I need to add something else?

Please and thank you :D :D
