Ok, This totally blew me away today. My 2.0 97' GS has 77K on it so I figured I would go ahead and replace the manual trans fluid. I have a friend who has worked on many a turbo DSM, so I had him come over and give me a hand. Problem is, when we went to drain the old fluid, we couldn't find the Drain or Fill Plug.

We found the trany, on the drivers side, and we found where we figured the fluid would drain from - a 2" long bolt, pointed toward the bumper and somewhat toward the ground. After we removed the bolt, nothing came out. The car was on a jack stand but still..

Two questions:

- Where are the drain and fill plugs?
-Is the drain plug infact 2" long, and am I running on a desert dry trainy?

If anyone has a website with info / pictures on this, I would appreciate it. If I can get some answers, I think we are going to try again tomorrow.

I actually saw this site, however this is the part of the website that I was looking at:

http://www.plymouthlaser.com/tflu.htm

The problem is, this is not the same tranny as the GS. The tranny is on the driver side for our cars.

BTW, I do very much thank you for the help!

If you have changed the GS tranny fluid before, I would like to speak with you, try and catch me on AIM, with user name zilchmister

Thanks!

Since you guys keep an archive of info, here is what I came to find out about changing the NON Turbo 2.0 tranny fluid:

To start, you need to be sitting in front of the Driver side wheel well to properly locate your plugs. I found it easiest to remove the driver side front wheel and to remove the back part of the big ass plastic splash guard, it made things 1000X easier.

1-Locate the drain plug: Look around tranny, you'll notice a bunch of bolts around the outside, all pointing at your. These bolts hold the tranny to the bell houseing. Along the bottom of the tranny run your hand along, you'll notice that right along the bottom you will find a lone bolt, all by itself, pointing toward the passenger side of the car. You can see this bolt only if you crawl under and look, otherwise you'll have to feel for it. It is located at 6 o'clock in relation to the drive shaft.

2-Locate the fill plug: I belive you will find the drain plug at about 2 o'clock on your tranny. It's easy to spot with the wheel off. It is plastic, and does not screw in, you simply have to pop it off. Remove the drain plug BEFORE you remove the fill, otherwise you are going to have a gusshing mess on your hands when trying to drain the system.

Hopefully this is enough info for you guys to find what your looking for.

I have a 2g Esi DSM and have found the easiest way to get to the fill plug on the transmission is as follows....

1-Remove battery and battery tray
2-Remove brake fluid reservoir and windshield washer fluid reservoir and move them off to the side
3- Look down behind the splash shield for the tire and behind the cv axle and you will see a rubber plug on the side of the transmission.
4- Pull and twist until plug is removed.
5- Check and fill tranny fluid as needed (Refer to owners manual for transmission fluid type)

Right next to your drivers side axle(to the right of it) is the fill plug. I just took a funnel and attached a hose to fill it but another option is to remove the speedo gear on the top of the trans and fill till it comes out of the plug near the axle.
