I don't lend out tools unless it's to a person that would do the same for their tools if I needed something.

I have more or less that same box as that Matco one but Snap On along with a top chest and side cabinet, plus 2 smaller roll-arounds, one Snap On the other I forget.

I had to add it all up for insurance a while back and cost to replace everything was right around $40,000. Toolboxes alone were $15000 and then figure some of the more expensive equipment like the welder, torch, plasma cutter, air compressor, parts washer, etc.

Damm that's a lot of money right there.... I don't have thousands and thousands in tools but have all the ones needed to take a DSM apart. I got them mostly from Auto Zone and its better than them crappy ones at walmart made in china. I wish I had top brand tools like matco or snap on though, maybe someday when im older:)...

No Sears close to you? Craftsman makes great tools and are relatively affordable. Plus, lifetime warranty FTW!!

Yeah there is one here but its really small, I have never really checked it out before but should:p. There is a nice sears about 45 mins from where I live, I always check out the tools when im up there craftsman does make great tools too.

I buy a whole bunch of Harbor Freight crap, breaks all the time, but Lifetime Warranty is Lifetime Warranty. Why spend 250.00 for a ratcheting box end wrench set and possibly never see it break with it's Lifetime Warranty, when you can buy a 21.99 set at Harbor Freight, break it 3 times a month and just go in and keep getting a new one. Heck saved me a lot of money.

So you do not have to run back and forth several times a month to return it. Simple. Spend the money to get a quality product.

People who spend the money, like myself. Use them on a everyday use. As a career, job etc...

So they need something that will last a lifetime. Not a lifetime of replacing it.

Most people on here use simple, cheaper tools just to work on their everyday vehicles on the weekends. And some who do it for a job/career.

Another way to look at it.

I am the kind of person that if I borrow anything, I return it quickly and in better shape than I borrowed it in.

However, most people do not do the same so I do not like loaning tools. They either never come back or it takes forever. I loaned a ladder once, my buddy used it and laid it on his front lawn. His buddy, who was a contractor, needed a ladder and loaded it on his truck. Three months later I asked about the ladder and my buddy had no idea where it was, he was going to buy me a new one when the original re-appeared.

Think it was Benjamin Franklin that said:
"Neither a borrower or a lender be"

You are right, you may never use the warranty, but it is nice to have. I had an old breaker bar that was my fathers, used it to break an axle nut on my donor and it broke along with a socket I was using. Took them both back to sears and no questions asked, got new tools.

BUT the biggest advantage - those Harbor Freight tools DO break, usually when your knuckles are most vulnerable. Ya band aids are cheap too, but I would rather not have to use them!

That reminds me. I have a couple ratchets I need to take back and get replaced. They locked up on me. :(

i agree. i get all of my tools from either Matco or Mac, if it breaks, they come by and replace it, i do not have to drive anywhere. besdides the fact that you get tools on a payment plan and pay 20 a week on whatever you get. i have about 5k in tools and another 1k in just the box (rollaway cart lime green, dont ask) and i lend my tools to people that return them, the minute i have to go get my borrowed tool back, they are on the list.
i have a mechanic next door, he has about 40k in tools, and about that in boxes as well. i get to borrow whatever i need, why? because i return it after i use it, i wipe it down to cleaner than when i recieved it, and if i break it, i let him know so he can get it warrantied.
i am one of the few that he lets use his tools, it is all about respect.
"to some, that is more important."
ROFL

You'll learn how much force to use, and what direction to push. It's part of being a mechanic. Kind of like learning that a Crescent wrench is actually only useful as a beating bar.

I've been buying tools since I was 12 or 13. It adds up over the years. I have most everything I need and when I work on something and I need a tool I just buy it.
