The story of how the beginning of this build coming into fruition is alot longer than this is so I am going over key points. My license is suspended for 1 year. I can’t drive anywhere due to a huge misunderstanding with the law that I truly do not wish upon anyone. So, with that being said, I was looking around to do a build to bide my time. Initially I wanted to do a resto mod with a 70 chevelle, 55 Chevy, or a 68 Camaro. However 8 grand on a shell alone was insane. Plus fabrication etc etc.... I simply did not want to shell out every penny I had into a build. So I started looking into swaps. Most likely an 5.0 swapped f100 or the generic ls swap. I actually did look into doing an ls swapped Miata at one point. So, based on this information, a good friend of mine hit me up and was like, “you want my minivan?” He was moving to Vegas due to future job opportunities. He got a call from the apartment and put a security deposit on it however he had to get rid of everything within a month. I knew this guy had a good relationship with his knowledge of cars. He’s owned several badass cars including a 2003 480 whp terminator cobra which is how we met... shared the common interest in the cobra and cars in general. So, he sold me his 1995 Mitsubishi expo with the 4g63 swap from a 92 galant vr4. The van has had all the work done to it. 3 grand worth in parts... When it was running it made a good 300hp to the tire. Tires spin all the way through 2nd gear on top of this... on a 40 roll, this kept up with an 02 catfish Camaro ss to put things in perspective. One day, he was cruising around town and all of the sudden the oil temperature shot up and so he shut off the car and had it towed home. The oil balancer had shattered along with the bearings and the crank got a bit shaved up. I’m taking it to the shop over this month to see if the crank is saveable. If not, I’m going all the way and getting a new forged crank by eagle. Most likely going to just do this however the 6bolt crank in there is definitely worth saving. (Heard it was stronger than the aftermarket cranks and is good for the power numbers I want to make) Parts already ordered include a new set of off the shelf wiseco pistons, piston rings, aluminum oil pump, race balance shaft, bearings, etc etc. This particular 6 bolt 4g63t is from a 92 vr4 galant. Figured eh... why not get this fully rebuilt since the motors already apart. Already has Pitsons and Manley rods (one of the rods got burnt due to the oil balance shaft blowing) but the engine builder wants to try to save as much as he can.. The heads were already ported. Just need to get it back from the engine shop and wait on his inspection. Once again... Taking it into the shop to get everything inspected for warps and cracks. Block should still be good seeing as it’s a 1rst gen with no obvious signs of anything too alarming. If not, I have a 2nd gen motor standing by from my other friend with 120,000 miles from a 1998 gst. I’d rather very much use the first gen 6 bolt that’s in it currently so I’m not dumping too much money into it and simply because it’s preferable to go with a 1rst gen 4g63. Future plans include running a “boost by gear” or boost by speed (more accurate term lol) tune on e85. Off the shelf borgwarner turbo on 40 lbs of boost... A reliable 600 plus to the tire is the goal. If this is going to be a thing which most likely will be happening, I’m converting to awd with suspension upgrades and slicks. I read somewhere that these expos came with an awd setup but I have yet to find someone I can talk to about this.. I’d like to keep it as sleeper looking as possible without loosing too much traction either. All in all, this is truly a great project and I look forward to getting started.
