    Hello DSMers,

I bought a 95 TSI AWD over the weekend and now have it in my yard and have been tinkering with it. It has 1200 cc injectors, HX35, along with many other mods. When I bought the car, the guy pulled DSMLINK off his other car to get it to start because it apparently had a bad MAF. He gave me a "black box ECU" with the car and told me I would need a new MAF and to tune it to get the injectors and turbo dialed in in order to it to start.

Fast forward to now, I wanted to see if I could get it started enough to move it, so I pulled the fuel rail and installed my stock blue top injectors and unplugged the MAF to get it into limp mode which would be enough to move it. After doing this it still just turns over and doesn't start, so I decided to look up the ECU. The numbers are : MD345713. I looked that up on this thread and found that it is out of a '98 2.4ltr Spyder. He had told me it was a flashable '98 turbo ECU. So what I want to know, and I believe I already know the answer, is this compatible with my 95 Talon TSI AWD? It might be helpful to know that the harness is from a '97 GST (Engine swap). Also, can someone confirm that this is a Spyder 2.4 ECU? He swears that it is out of a '98 Spyder turbo. After I get this confirmed, I'll be looking for some advice on where to go from here. Thanks for any info, guys!

A Spyder ecu wont start your car, the fuel pump driver that it uses to turn on the pump is triggered differently in the Spyder, on top of that if its for the 2.4l engine the injectors wont be set up for your 450 injectors anyway, although it might allow you to at least move it, you can try turning on the fuel pump by jumping it and then see if it will start and run but ultimately I would try to trade it for a black box non Spyder ecu in the end.

I jumped the fuel pump and as you suggested it fired right up. Now at least I know the ECU is good so I can sell it. Would you guys recommend me buying another black box, the correct one, and getting ECUFLASH or getting an EPROM and going DSMLINK? It seems to be a lot cheaper to go with ECUFLASH, but I am not sure the differences between the two.

Ecuflash works really well, its also based on a much newer and faster ecu, there is more of a learning curve with it I guess, because there isnt a forum dedicated to spoon feeding for it like Link has, but then again Link is paid to spoon feed customers whereas Ecuflash is not.

I do know that this car is running on E85 with an aeromotive 340 pump. Does black box tuning have support for E85? When I see link and black box tuning talked about together, people often say link supports E85, but never say that black box does or doesn't. Anyone know for sure?

Ecuflash does support E-85 in fact I ran for years like that just fine, I ended up getting a standalone system but that wasnt the reason, I just wanted finer control over things. You simply have to set up an E-85 tune for yourself the same as you would with any other system, and since there are alot of Evo guys running the flash based ecu, you could probably use an E-85 map from an Evo as a great place to start.
