Hi all,

This is intended to be a general discussion thread regarding quick spool turbos.

I've experienced the following turbos...

T25
14B
BP V-Trim
BP 57-Trim
BP S256 Non-ETT (current turbo)

...and I like them all but my I want my next turbo to be quick spooling to give back that mid range power.

I was thinking of going E316G but two things are holding me back. 1 is price & availability and 2 is power & flow.

I would like a quick spooling turbo that I can make 400 awhp (so about 45 -50 lbs/min) on 94 octane with no meth or water injection. It would also be nice if it could spool faster than the S256 I currently have.

I was thinking of 20G but I don't know how laggy it is compared to my S256...

Again, ultimate goals are 400 awhp (45 -50 lbs/min) on 94 oct (no meth) and quick spool.

I think you didn't take the time to search around for the info thats already out there on our forum. I see this topic covered about once a week and this site has been around since November 2002. With that being said, there are 52.17 weeks in a year times 10 years (give or take) equals 521.7. That means there is potentially 500+ posts covering this topic, which ones did you read through that didn't already have enough opinions/facts in it?

Not trying to be rude man but the information is out there, you've just got to look. The list goes on and on and... I didn't even bother linking to any of the Holset threads and how they spool, there are just too many to list.

I don't think he had a real question. More or less asking how people felt about the turbos they have used. I could be wrong and I see your point in the matter.

Pretty much. I just wanted to know what was popular for quick spooling street turbos.

I've considered the 16G but it doesn't flow enough to make 400 awhp on 94 octane. 20G was my second choice but I don't know what the spool is like compared to my S256.

I just wanted to know what else was out there....

Thanks for the info Gofer, I've already read some of those threads. I'll read the rest tonight.

Have you dynoed your FP HTA68 on pump gas? Do you have a log of the dyno run you could post?

I am running a 20g, with a 3" anti surge housing, and am currently flowing 49lbs a min at 25psi. Spools as quick as a 16g and packs a powerful punch.

Never dyno'd it on pump, I never had a reason to. I just street tuned it for DD'ing duties at low boost levels for passing cars, going up hills, or on ramp scenarios.

Here were the HTA68 spool characteristics on the dyno, the red line was 21psi and the blue was 28.

You've got to remember that A LOT comes into play with spool time, its not just the turbo.

I know, that's what I'm hoping to figure out. I want to stay with the 2.0L and FP manifold (DSM flange). Basically, my current setup plus a turbo.

Is there any way I can help increase spool on my current setup without spending an arm and a leg to change everything? Maybe a turbine housing port?

FMIC and piping, intake manifold, cams, cam gears, engine displacement, valve size, exhaust manifold, turbine housing, turbine, boost pressure, and the tune, just to name a few (I might be missing something?), are things that can affect (increasing or decreasing) the time it takes to spin up the turbo.

forget the V trim, and possibly the 57 trim althoughi've made great 438whpo daily with one for a long time even with worn comp wheel blades.. it spooled fully by about 4200 RPM starting early in third.. but you left out the best t3/t4 hybrid there possibly might be for DSM's..the goold ol'e 50 trim, get that with a t31 stage III turbine wheel and a .63 ar exhaust housing and you'll see full 30psi by 4200 on that as well with better transient response and a possible 450hp (most make les cause their combos aren't correct, some make more because theirs are perfect combos to the turbo)

the 68hta is no laugh at turbo, but i'd not shrug off an E3 16g either (i'm trying to get one and i've got a turbo good for over 750hp on my car right now, a lacking torque range can suck on a daily driver and the eIII has a great torque curve epecially when run on e85 and boosting 3032psi letting it fall to whatver it can make in the top)

screw a v trim they surge too easily, also screw the 14b and t25, we all toss those for a reason :D

Now, an hx35, that's what i REALLY want, they spool fast and make more HP than any 50/57 trim could think of

ignore sentence below... how does the 256 spool, say startingin third at 3500 RPM and laying inot it from a cruise
I can't spoeak on the 256 as i have no expeirence with them, so you'll have to get info from others on that one
