Hey so i blew my head gasket today just by being stupid. My timing wasnt set, running lean, getting knock at 5krpm, bad thermolstat so i was overheating, dont have a set boost. So I pushed it and Pop went the head gasket. My dsm has always been good to me, but i was bad to it.

I bought the full gasket kit off ebay for my other 2g gsx but didnt use the head gasket because I have heard some bad things about them. So i have an "ebay" AKA "Evergreen Automotive" headgasket and its somwhat tempting because i could be running tomarrow if i chose to. Even though I'm not going to use it. So my question.

How many DSMers are using the ebay headgaskets?
And how much are you guys pushing?

A few good question is if it was a cheap headgasket it must of been cheap head bolts too?
Re-used 1G 6-bolt OEM bolts torqued 30-60-90, the same as I have done on plenty of other jobs. The bolts were all still tight when I removed the valve cover to check the torque shortly before he picked the car up.

I drove the car a week or so putting around 60-80 miles on it prior to this happening and it ran fine. On his way home is when the gasket blew, and he wasn't even making boost at the time. He called and said the car started missing badly and smoking out of the exhaust. I drove down the next evening and cylinders 2&3 were full of coolant and had "0" compression.

The car was a bone-stock 1990 with nothing more than a Buschur exhaust, K&N filter, DeJon intake, and Small 16G turbo which replaced the 14B that had nearly locked up solid due to oil coking.

Also were the surfaces shaved clean?
Hell no, I didn't even remove the used gasket....I just put the Evergreen gasket in on top of the factory one.

Of course they were spotless. I don't half-ass anything I work on, ever.

How many headgaskets have you done that are still running today?
Every one but this example- it was the only problem I've ever had.

Personally, Ive used an Evergreen engine kit before. I did NOT use the headgasket, I used a Felpro composite. I also prefer to use viton valve stem seals, so the seals that came with the Evergreen kit were not used either.
Remember when people on this site were complaining about Felpro composite gaskets blowing and referring to them as "Failpros" haha? I would ask these people about their car's state of tune. Personally, Ive ran 25psi on 93 pump with 18 degrees of timing up top on a nice, flat 11:1 afr and no knock and had no problems whatsoever on a Felpro composite hg- of course, this was with ARP headstuds, and I ran it this way for years.

Hey, Jus, regarding the exhaust manifold not sealing using the ss gasket, did you check the flange on the manifold? I ask because a friend of mine had the exact same issue with leakage. He eventually got pissed and removed the manifold and layed a straight edge on it and come to find out, the damn flange was warped as hell and it was so bad that not even a composite would have sealed. FFWD has some very nice turbo and manifold gaskets that Im going to try out on my new build.

To the op, Id take the advice and experience of Jus regarding the cheapo headgasket. Its been tried and proven to fail; keep it off your car:p

I would only suggest a mls after the block and head have been checked for straightness! To allow the two to mate and seat correctly! Just my 2 cents

Why not just spend the extra money on a MITSU headgasket, or another headgasket you KNOW will provide all the satisfaction instead of going Ebay and taking the risk? If you're willing to take the risk of messing up more and spending more money...do it right the first time and dont look back. Just my .02 cents.

Yea it might be cheaper, but sometimes it isnt worth it in the long run. IF the headgaskets all of a sudden become the best thing on earth after a few years of thousands of members using them..they yea then id take the risk LOL

Ugh... I hate to admit it but I was really cheap when I first bought this car but I am running a "Nippon Racing" MLS head gasket.

When I took my motor apart the old motor surprisingly it already had an OEM MLS and I compared the two and they were identical. Apparently Nippon makes gaskets for all the big Japanese auto makers. Is it really the same as an OEM? I dont know but it was freaking identical down to every bent tab and all the black goo around the cylinders and oil passages.

Its held up to everything I threw at it so far. however I know looks can be deceiving and on my next build it will not be worth it to save the $70 on the most important gasket in the car.
I as well Bought a Nippon racing gasket kit. My ofh gasket leaked, my front case leaked as well as the crank seal. The mls headgasket I paired with arp headstuds and it has been 10k, boosting almost everywhere and I have spiked my 16g past 30 psi. So far so good on the mls hg.
