All automatics function similarly, Mitsu or Chrysler.

Check for codes, (P0700 from the ECU) and find out where the fluid leak is. A bad front pump can cause you to not shift gears, and leaking from the input shaft seal often accompanies a bad pump. Many things can cause the transmission not to shift, such as a faulty TCU, bad shift solenoid or wiring, stuck valve, and worn clutch packs.

Limp mode will result in your being stuck in second. If you're stuck in limp mode, clear the codes to get out of it.

Got the problem resolved it turns out it was a bad tcu relay it was intermittent the coil would energize and operate properly for a short amount of time then the coil in the relay would burn out shut down the solenoid pack and kick the tranny into limp mode!!!! new relay no problems thanks for the help.
    Check your relay wires:
green/black: signal from the tcu +12 with the key on.
    Black: ground constant.
    Red:+12 constant
Red/Black: +12 when the relay is active (with key on)
