Newbie Forum - Beginner/newbie/general DSM modification questions. First mods, how to run 10's when you haven't run 12's yet, any tech question that doesn't fit in another tech forum.
90-94 CAS were just slotted..and lined up with a slot on the cam (No threads in the cam...)...Located on the passenger side or the head...
95-96 CAS was bolted under the intake cam gear...Not sure if there are threads or even if the cam was slotted....Located on driver side of car....
97-99 CAS Was BOLTED to the intake cam, threads inside the cam, and was lined up with slots (1g style)Located on passenger side of motor
90-94 CAS was round
95-96 was much like the 2g Crank Position Sensor...
97-99 CAS Is more Squarish...Look under that blue hallman MBC...
it'd be a different story, just wanted to say thanks for the help in current and in advance
Passenger side of intake cam is slotted and tapped for a bolt...
Pics would help...
As they says pics are worth a thousand words....
And the motor from 96 GSX thats now in it looks like this:
How do I make it work?
note, all these parts came off of the car, yet everyone local to me cant figure the cam sensor out....

^^ this is my strange CAS

^^ yet I have a crank angle sensor
<a href="http://s646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/?action=view¤t=1020091722.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/1020091722.jpg" border="0" alt="weird thingy"></a>
^^ what in the world is this?
<a href="http://s646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/?action=view¤t=1020091747.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/1020091747.jpg" border="0" alt="tming"></a>
^^ intake cam has the pick up ring on it, yet the exhaust gear has 2 timing lines?
<a href="http://s646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/?action=view¤t=1020091736.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/1020091736.jpg" border="0" alt="cams"></a>
^^ the intake cam is on the left right?
<a href="http://s646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/?action=view¤t=1020091742.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/1020091742.jpg" border="0" alt="why only one plug?"></a>
cam seals, yet only one plug? what do I put inplace of the sensor like the post above?
<a href="http://s646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/?action=view¤t=1020091745.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/1020091745.jpg" border="0" alt="mach up of top end"></a>
^^ yet the top end all lines up great, spins freely, but I can't figure out these top sensors, most people have the square/round one on the intake cam on the passenger side, or they have one sensor on the intake cam under the gear, yet I have 2 sensors up top, and a crank sensor.... I'm going to start putting everything on the block back to par (swapping the crank sprocket since the one on it has a chunk missing) and redoing all of my timing components and getting the head on, I just would really like to know if I have the wrong electronics... I'll start taking the sensors out to the car and looking for connectors they fit, I'm still dumbfounded by the cam sensor having one for the intake and exhaust, because obviously, the exhaust cam gear has nothing for the sensor to read.
pic 2 is not the CPS that is your 95-96 CAS
Pic 3 is a barrel capacitor....It should be bolted to the top of your intake manifold...
Pic 4 Your intake cam is no doubt a 95-96 intake cam gear....All Cam gears has 2 timing mark lines on them....
Pic 5 Intake cam gear is in your RIGHT hand...notice the notchs? Not sure what year cam that is (I know 97-99 cams gears have threads inside the cam to bolt the bracket assembly/CAS to the cam) I'm not sure if 95-96's came with the notchs or not.....(I know for a fact all 91-94's Did though)
Pic 6 The 2 open area seals go on the cam gear side of the cams.....The plug would only be used if you choose to stick with the 95-96 style CAS
Pic 7 Looks nice....Personally to make life easy not sure if your doing a 6 bolt swap of not but I would buy a 6 bolt swap harness from JNZtuning. Everything would be a bolt in affair if you have a 95-96 car and tap in 1 wire for 97-99 car... Then you can just go buy a black top CAS from a 93-94 and your set....for about 100 dollars for wont have to really mess with the wiring....
I would just disconnect your CAS off your motor and swap it onto the new motor....But be warned you will need to swap intake cams....I dont think 95-96 motors are tapped to accept a bolt like the 97-99 Intake cams....BTW you know you dont have the cover on top of your motors CAS?
I apprecite the help JFZERO.BTW the cover is off because I took the pics while working on it.
my only remaining question as of now, is with the plug for the intake cam pas. side, do i just place that plug in as im putting the valve cover back on to seal the hole, or is there something eles that goes in there too. sorry i took these pics in a hurry, then i went through the electronics i have and figured what certain things were, but the item in the left of pic 1, is that? it has purple wires tied together into one little pin of a plug/connector. and does anyone have a picture of placement for that barrel capacitor? and what exactly, is it for?
Boostantix... Sorry if I stated some obvious info....No idea on the purple wires never seen them on any of my dsm's before....I would put some RTV on that plug and slap that valve cover on....
Just bolt that barrel capacitor anywhere on the manifold....Its there for noise insulation and crap....Electronic crap....Just please keep it connected and on the car.
If anyone local is willing to help/teach me how to change the cams, the car is in a heated, well lit garage with tools and plenty of cold beer.PM me.Im a painter by trade so I can barter some paintwork.Id rather have someone that knows what theyre doing there than trying to figure out written instructions.Seriously.
Boostantix, didnt mean to whore out your thread, just seemed like the right place to post.
Squirrel82- its cool cant blame ya
everything went together pretty soon. no pics yet, i didn't have my phone on me when i was working on the car. only missing the fuel rail spacers, and an exhaust. cant wait to drive it
Make sure the motor is at TDC for starters....
Then the 2gb CAS has to be in correctly....You CAN have it 180* out....There should be a painted mark on the CAS that painted mark will face the sensor or back towards the intake manifold...
Make sure you that done and report back in to me.
Another possibility is that your lifters all popped up when you pulled the cam, and the valves now aren't shutting all the way. Sometimes letting them bleed down overnight will help.
Got it fired up. I checked the sensor like you said and it was fine. I ended up swapping around the plug wires and it finally started up
