Axle seal question 2g n/t

Im trying to install a new seal on my 98 talon and ran across a problem. For one Im not sure if the metal piece around the hole is part of the old seal and needs to come out. There is no way my new seal will go in with this metal piece in so we tried to take it out but had no luck now its all bent up and I dont know what to do. Can somebody please explain to me why Iam doing wrong ? I cannot find a picture of a video of the exact part im looking at. Here is a picture with the metal ring we bent that we are unsure of if it needs to come out. . Here is another picture

It should be part of the old seal. Just carefully keep prying it should come out. I was a bit confused also cause it wasn't coming out. eventually it just popped off.
