Howdy.
Just recently transferred to TX from Illinois. In IL, the 96-98 2G's were on their OBDII exception list because of the "Ready State" monitor problem, so they just did a MIL check. Not so here in TX. Once the 96 & 97's fail the OBDII scan, they get a Dyno two-speed tailpipe sniff test. Fair enough. My 98 has the exact same problem as the 96 & 97 but it just fails with no chance to get the dyno test. Why the difference? The dude in Austin told me that cars don't make the exception list unless 20% of them fail the OBDII scan. The problem is that Mitsubishi fixed the Ready State problem in 98 for the non-turbos but not for the turbos. (See TSB 03-13-005) Since most of the cars were non-turbos, 98 has a much better test success rate. The texas system doesn't differentiate between turbos and non-turbos so I'm screwed.
I called the dealership and while the guy wasn't rude, he sure wasn't helpful.
Got any sage advice?
As I understand it, the 99's don't have the awful drive cycle procedure like the 96-98's had and aren't on the EPA's exception list. Could I put a MD359402 ecu in mine and get the improved drive cycle procedure? (TSB 04-13-012) I only need to get 3 of the 5 monitors in the ready state. Oh, and I do remember reading somewhere about spyders having a different ecu pin out than coupes. Something about it sending 5v to the fuel pump relay instead of supplying ground. Sounds strange to me, but is it a concern?
Thanks in Advance,
Rob
