hi,
i am interested in putting 18" motegi MR-7 wheels on my 1991 plymouth laser. my only problem is i do not know if they will fit in the wheel well with tires. if anyone out there has 18" wheels on their laser....please let me know so and also tell me what size tire you have on the wheel. i would also like to know how snugly they fit in the wheel well. if 18's dont fit i guess i will have to go for 17 inch wheels. what is a good size tire that would fit a 17" wheel?

thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me

cool so then basically the 205/55/16 and the 225/50/16 are about exactly the same, the only noticeable difference is the 225 is wider... but since i already have an awd i dont need to go that wide...or do i need to spend $20 extra per tire... and if i went with a 205/50/16 tire id have the same width but the profile would be super low, and since my car isnt lowered it would leave a huge wheel gap and look like shit.... so basically the best thing to do is go with the 205/55/16 and thats what ill do.... thanks to everyone for the explanations and the help :thumb:

I would say you almost have it...

The most confusing part about tire sizing is the profile height. It's a percentage, not a measurement.

205/55s and 225/50s are almost identical height. 205s may still be the best choice, but I hate to see you make a decision on flawed reasoning.

my brother got some new rims for his 3kgt and is letting me put his old ones on my car. will i have to get new tires for them? its the 5 spoke 16 inch rims off of a 93 NT...thanks for the help

edit: i have the stock swirly rims off of a 96 gst

im not worried about cornering traction....im just looking for an alternative of swirlies...thanks for the quick reply

Well... they are 16x8 but they are boat anchors, so they are not great for performance.

TT RX7 had ultra light (only 15bls) 16x8 rims, but they are much tougher to find (and for a good reason).

Other cars that 16x8 rims that fit our cars are:

TT 300ZX and Ford Probe GT (V6 model)

Leon
RR

I took the stock wheels from my brother's 3KGT after he got new rims... they fit fine and look 20x better... It doesn't make much difference, but I have a 90 Eclipse. You shouldn't have to get new tires.

-I don't know what size of tire you have now, best to go to a tire store and ask to put a tire of whatever size you want next to your car. if you have 205/55/16 and switch to 205/45/16, there'll be a hugh wheel gap.

i have the 195/65/r14 on them now. i want to stay about that diameter, but a bit smaller ok, since i am lowering the car 1.5 inches

The stock tire on 14" rims was a 195/70R14, so right now your speedo is 3% fast. Stick with either the 205/55 on 16" rims or the 215/50 on 17" and save your existing rims for snowtires. The weight difference between 16" and 17" is a red herring, you can go as light with either as you can afford. Like I said before my 17" rims and tires are lighter than my stock 16" rims and tires and as strong but my rims were $250+ each.

With the 205/55 your sidewalls will be 1 in shorter than what you have now and the 215/50 will be 2 inches shorter but they will be the right diameter for the car.

235/45-17 tires are not designed for 17x7 inch rims. You would need at least an 8 inch wide rim to make them fit and work properly. I have had 235/45-17 tires on 17x7 rims and had the outside edge of the tire started to peel and flake off. 225 wide tires are the largest tire that can safely operate on a 7 inch wide rim. You are also changing the overall diameter of the tire to larger than the factory size which would result in an inaccurate speedometer reading and taller gear. A 215/45-17 is the size you should run. If you run a 17x8 wheel, then a 235/40-17 is the tire size to run. :thumb:

What total nonsense!

There are a couple of items of misinformation in this post.

First of all, if 225s are fine for a 7" wheel, then 235s should be fine a 7.5", and 245s fine for an 8". One inch is the equivalent of 25.4 millimeters. So, half of an inch is the equivalent of 12.7 millimeters. So, for every half of an inch increase in wheel width, you have room for another 10mm of tread width plus an additional 27%.

Second, 215/45-17 is not the size you should run. The originator of the thread has a 1996 GSX. Those did not come with 17" wheels. Their stock total wheel diameter is different; it is 215/55-16. So, this means that you should run a 225/45-17 or a 235/45-17. If you run 235/45-17, then your speedometer will only read .1% too slow, which is negligible. If you run a 225/45-17, then your speedometer will read 1.3% too fast, which is also pretty negligible.

Research by Mark Carrier and Harold Pashler at UC San Diego very nicely showed that people learn better - at least as indexed by later recall - when they solve the problem on their own.

Grrrr.

I was wondering if anyone knew if these 3g wheels will fit on my '94 n/t. If so could u tell me what size tires I should use b/c I know nothing about this sort of thing. I have the stock 10 spoke 16" 1g wheels if this makes a difference, thanks.

Don't kill me if this subject is already been through once :) just redirect me to right topic...

But i'm planning to buy 18" wheels to my 1g, how wide wheels should i buy ? 7.5 " ? and how wide tires and with what profile that they don't come over the body edge....

I'm thinking 18" (7.5" wide) 215/40 tires... will they fit fine ?

And what kind of et would be good... et40 ?

if you only want to run 215's i think you can get by just fine with 7" wide wheels.

I've heard of good success of 17x8 on talons & GVR-4s... I know that when i get mine i want to run a 245 series tire, so... 8" is a requirement.
