Hey guys and gals! A little bit about me... This is my 4th dsm, and I plan on making my dream dsm like I have always wanted. I will be on a budget as I am in college and don't have all the money in the world to spend on the car like I wish i did.
Now onto the car. The shell itself is very clean, especially for Wisconsin, so a great starting point to do what I want to do. Overall, I want this car to be clean clean clean, and quick. Not blistering fast or " must have all the horsepower", but quick. When I bought the car, it had some great groundwork for modifications on it which for me was a perfect building block. I didn't have to spend money on a nice catback, or suspension, or brakes, or things like that, since it was all done. Me being in college this was PERFECT since I wouldn't have to spend thousands of dollars on that stuff that I would have wanted to do to the car anyways.
The only thing that needed to be done when I got the car was that I needed to pull the transmission and figure out why the clutch release fork was sitting too far to the left, resulting in a clutch that wasn't releasing all the way. I pulled the transmission right away after buying the car and decided to just shim the pivot ball for the time being until I tore the whole thing apart this winter. I also put a new OEM throwout bearing in since it had an aftermarket one that was falling apart, and some new MT-90 gear oil in. The car shifted through the gears hard before and the clutch grabbed the second you started to release the clutch pedal, and now it shifts smooth as can be. I figured this was fine to do so I could drive and enjoy the car the last couple months of the non winter before I put the car away and tore into it. While it was apart I also did the BCS mod for just a nudge in performance and it actually gave the car a nice little bump in butt dyno power.
I took the car to the local drag strip and with being on a failing stock t-25, a catback, fmic, and intake filter, I was able to run a 15.1 @91 mph. This was a nice baseline to get for the car. My driving is less than ideal, a better 60 ft would have easily netted me a 14 second pass, but I was happy with what I was able to do considering I had attempted launching the car twice before going to the strip.
My first modification I made to the car was a 3" Megan Racing catless downpipe. This required me to remove the reducer in the already installed Thermal R&D catback exhaust. I cut off the reducer and fitted a piece of 3 inch piping with a 2 bolt flange on the end to mate up to the downpipe. The install was a breeze and it was well worth the time and money. The tone of the car changed immensely and I absolutely love hearing the sounds it makes now, and the butt dyno seemed to have picked up a few ponies as well.
