65 here youngsters. I'm retired now and my 92 awd laser sits most of the time with occasional runs to keep things loose. It was given to me by my brother in law. It broke down on the lady that used to own it and she told him to go pick it up or she was going to let the wrecker driver have it. He...
Follow the Vfaq authors personal note on how to set the tention on the belt. it's the best way to do it. The problem is torqueing the bolt on the tensioner idler pully without increasing the tention on it. You have to hold the cam portion of the tentioner pully(the part with the two holes for...
Forget them dude! They are the ones that lost out. What goes around comes around. You have the right attitude and you'll do good anywhere. Apply with the big companys, even out of state if you have to. Go for the big fish. It pay off in retirement. They need people with integrity. That place...
Tell me about it. The belt that was on it was not OEM but it was made by a company that manufactured OEM parts for cars blah blah blah blah. The Gates belt that was on it was not cheap. it was 130$ plus. It was just noisy.
I know you guys were hanging on the edge waiting to find out what happened to the gap and the bad super charger whine.First off I loosened the Gates balance shaft belt and reinstalled the old tensioner and that quieted it down some. It was really noisy around the balance shaft area. The...
Hey DSM I'm going to try what you suggest. Oren I made my tensioner tool that works pretty good. Either way I have an OEM belt on the way. If I'm going to take everything apart again something is going to get fixed. Thanks for the help guys.
I don't think it is after reading up on it. I ran the engine up and rechecked the belt and the gap was still good. One of the other issues is that it whines and I don't like that.I'm going to keep messing with it to fix that. I keep reading that the noise issue is the tensioner. I don't...
I replaced the timing belt and all associated components on my 1g. The belt is the high dollar Gates 167 and new Mitsubishi tensioner. I set the gap between the tensioner and the bracket at 0.15" like you're suppose to. Rotated the engine six times and waited. Checked the gap and it's still...
Why are cams for these cars so expensive? I just can't see the outrageous cost of these things. I would love to put some 272s on my car but they're cost prohibitive.
The timing marks are suppose to be flush with the top of the cylinder head (valve cover gasket surface) with the dowl pins up. To insure I'm in the right spot I mark the back side of the cam gear where it's closer to the gasket surface on the head. You can extend that surface closer to the head...
My other car is a 87 Buick Turbo T:D. It has the same drive train as the Grand National and it is ALSO up on jacks. They haul @@s in stock form and need very basic mods to give most cars a run for there money. If its cheap get it. The 86 and 87 were the ones that came with the intercoolers.
My unexpert opinion is that if your oil pressure was ok before than it's probably ok to put it back. Some trash probably got in there and got caught in the oil filter. If they make a oil pump rebuild kit than I would use it. It appears that the bushing for that idler oil pump gear can be...
If you are not going to make way more that stock horse power. Then I would keep the pistons and rods stock. Use a good quality hyper. Other turbo cars like the Grand National and Cyclone didn't come with forged pistons. If you do up the horse power limiting boost, knock and fuel mixture is the...
Just get a spring that is used on a carburator throttle shaft return and hook it to your dip stick. Use your imagination. I've been using one for years.
Several years ago my daughter overheated her 96 altima. At the suggustion of the machinist that checked the head. He suggested that I replace the rings. I'm glad I did because when I pulled the pistons some of the rings were stuck in their grooves. I guess this happened due to how hot it got. I...
I've read posts on here that say that the exhaust pipe has to be grounded to the chasis in order for the 02 sensor to do it's job. That's what the little braided strap on the down pipe does. Make sure its grounded.
A lot of fellows that run the translator mount it inside the car. that avoids having to get under the hood to make adjustments. It's a good idea. You can find another plug.
The balance shaft has to be in a certain position along with the cams and oil pump. There are procedures all over the place on how to do it. hopefully you didn't bend any valves. The only cheap way to find out is to put the belts back properly and do a compression check.
Thanks for the replys. Steve, If I were to guess. It's probably no more than 2000 RPM. It quickly comes down. It just makes engine stuff rattle. It doesn't rattle all the time. Probably half the time and the severity varies. I'll pay closer attention to the rpm when I start it up. Thanks a bunch...
What causes high RPM at start up? After which it quickly comes down and idles normally. Problem is it makes the lifters rattle and makes other noises untill it builds oil pressure.
I replaced mine from underneath the car on my 1G AWD. I might have removed the transfer case to get to it but it was no big deal. It is just four bolts.
:thumb:65 buckaroos is a good price for the complete setup. I paid quite a bit more. I was impressed with the functions. It also stores the log so you can go back and look at it.
You have to Identify what circuit the fusible link is in. Identify the components in that circuit and that they could be the cause of that short. If any wire in that circuit is rubbing against bare metal it could ground out and cause the short.
While trouble shooting the same problem on my...
I've used one off of a mid 80's Ford catalytic converter. I'm not sure of the year. But as soon as I get home I'll post the part number. I think it was over sized but still worked and it was cheap.
It was a given to me because it was going to be given to the wrecker driver that was going to pick it up from where it broke down. It had a busted timing belt. It was about a 500$ fix.
They are becoming scarce all the time. When I got mine about six years ago I would go to the pick and pull and see up to seven 1gs waiting to be harvested for parts. On recent pick and pull trips I'm lucky to see three to four. My other car is a 87 turbo regal. I'm lucky if I see two to three G...
Balance shafts are there for a reason. I made the mistake of having a mechanic remove them from a 4 cylinder mazda truck I had at his suggestion. I regretted it ever since. I wound up putting them back after I had to replace the head. The vibration was awful.
If the valves were not hit like they had metal jammed up against them then the valve guides are probably OK. When I lost my timing belt I had to replace 12 valves and four valve guides. That's because the valves were bent.
Welcome to the AWD money pit:ohdamn:. Look into the recalls for the 1G. Specifically, the transfer case leaking problem which causes it to lock up if lubrication is lost. You can get the recall kit cheaper than you can get a single OEM universal joint. The other is the leaking capacitors in the...
I had to prime mine not too lone ago. Off course all the belts were off. I found that a couple of the tension mounting bolt holes are tapped into the oil gally. Like the balance shaft tentioner bolt hole. I think there was another one too. Anyway, When I put the drill motor to the pump shaft and...
