Definitely syncros. Tranny rebuilt. I know how it feels. Had the same thing happen to me, and I had to stick with starting off at 2nd for a while. Until, I had enough for the repair. Best of luck to you.

I second the MAFS or a leak being the cause of the havoc you're going through. Not sure which has a specific coding that might cause some compatability issues for you. Can't seem to recall if it was the MAF or MAP sensor. I believe it is the MAP, and you should be in the clear. Just in case...

I'm no car guru, but I think you need to identify the location where the smoke is coming from. You said it is noticeable after a warmed up idle. Well, take a little trip and pull over at a safe location to check under the hood. I've never seen a mild smoke at idle for a blown head gasket...
