Unfortunately they do have to be pressed in and they are a PITA. Using a 12ton press will get you by, but it will be a struggle. If you have access to a 22ton press or larger I would recommend using that.

Have you tried the crank angle sensor? All your symptoms equal that or as you say a fuel issue.
