Hey all. About 7 years ago, an injector rail broke on my cylinder head for my GVR-4. I could not extract it without pulling the head. I wanted to put a built head on there that I had so I took the head off and the car has been sitting for 7 years. Life happened since then. Every year I swear...
Thanks all. So funny that I randomly linked do those clamps. I will try a combo of u-clamps like mentioned. Ironically I had the issue on a Camaro too.
Hi,I was wondering how to remove a failed catalytic converter on my MK4 ALH TDI that is not flanged on either side and then replace it with another cat using the below styled clamps or similar and not have exhaust leaks on either side.Example:I plan on using an angle grinder to cut the...
Does anyone reuse their block dowels?Every method I have used ends up with me distorting the block dowels. I know they are cheap and all that but I'd like to get them out without ripping them and distorting them if possible. Thanks
Lol! So true! Especially considering this is not the only element of the build. Lash is on the tight side unfortunately. If it survives for a few hundred miles, I will do everything that I can to keep it cool and use the best quality oils. Snake oil for avoiding burnt valves I guess.
Thanks for all of this. I appreciate it. Turns out that the 2 valves meet the spec but are on the tighter side. Might have to revisit in a few thousand miles to check up. One guy says stay in the middle of the range on the exhaust valves and the other insisted that he was fine on the closer...
Thanks, see I was reading that varied by vehicle though. Is this kind of the rule of thumb or is this vehicle specific?Man, I had no idea on the sodium plug! Would be just my luck and thanks for the falling.
Diameter of the bucket is exactly 3mm.Overall height is 25.11mmValve tip pocket to cam surface average is around 11.5mm. Desired calculated sizes are around 11.385 or 11.445 inches by best estimate.Math is not my specialty.I have a dial caliper and manometer if I didn't get something...
Thanks. I created an account at that site I linked to for some additional ideas since it was a topic already.I am going to grab my dial caliper and get those measurements. Thanks for the idea. I am swinging back and forth between buckets and stems as my option here BTW.BTW, how do I measure...
Hey...The correct sized buckets have not been available for years and I can not even get a used set. In fact, the head is extremely rare in itself. This is an 03 Focus SVT. They are all the same between 02-04. There is no engine code either. I have asked and asked but the community is so dead...
This is helpful. I wish that I had the knowledge to build such a jig if I were to take the angle of grinding the valve stems. Just keeping straight is the beast like you said.
Not sure if anyone here is familiar with tipping valves or grinding the inside of the bucket pedestal for non adjustable ford buckets which is in this case are on a Focus SVT. I swapped buckets around to get as far as I could go after lapping the valves but I still have 2 that I just can't...
So you would just average the lift of all the lobes and take the cam with the highest average or would you grab the cam that has a lobe with the highest lift?I'd say average no?Thanks.
Point taken for DSM engines. How about on tappet buckets used in my Focus SVT? I am also facing this question on that too. If you all don't know it's ok but that community is so dead. Apples and Oranges really but was wondering which set to grab. Adjusting lash is such a pain. Wish they used...
I know that there were some variations throughout the years and I am familiar with those. However, say you have cams that were the same spec from the factory. Given that they both look fine externally, which cam would you consider to be less or more worn?Would you consider the lobes or...
ohhhhhhh....well time to try and enjoy myself with an additional option should I verify the correct cam caps...which in reality I am 90% sure of anyways.
Maybe I am not tracking here, but if we swap used cams willy nilly isn't that effectively the same as using the wrong cam caps? Another way of asking the question is...If I have identified the correct camp caps, can I use either set of used cams? Thanks.
This is really cool. Nice article. So that's how they do it. I'd sooner trust a monkey then to let them take my money around here. Going for broke here. I'd better find those markings or get this worked out.FSVT head replacement and timing is a minefield anyways, so I am ready to live with...
Is a line bore a marking due wear or is it something else that I am looking for? Just wanted to clarify.Or is a line boring having a machine shop hone them. Thank you.
That is a fantastic idea man as far as marks etc! Not sure if I have pics but that is a good idea too!I forgot to add that both sets are in the right order, just not sure which set is which.I read that I can put the cam caps in and see if either set binds but I didn't want to inject any...
This is a non-dsm question, but the expertise is so high here, the Focus SVT community is not as strong, and I am comfortable here....It is not as bad as it sounds but it could be.History:I bent the valves on my FSVT when doing a timing belt job due to a failed OEM ford tensioner coming...
Thanks everyone. I am leaning towards high quality duct tape. I did cling wrap already and tried to throw the old head on (Focus SVT) but it wasn't going down all the way. I figured it wasn't worth the fight in such an important area. Industrial shrink wrap is in place but old head bolts are too...
I live off of a very dusty dirt road and I plan to do some work on my GVR4 at my new home which is just a mile away.I am going to have the vehicle towed.I can try newspaper or the like over the head opening to protect the ports, cylinders, ports etc. I figure that tape will just fly off the...
Ugghhh back from the grave. No answers on the last post but I have a new question. I have some used non-rusty 4g63T valves from the head that were on the previous non built head. Can I use these valves as replacements without going to the machine shop? I purchased the large clamp type spring...
Thanks, I guess your post brought out a lingering question that I always had in my mind. If I took it and tossed it on one of my other vehicles wouldn't it just run the same way it did the last one and have the same life expectancy as it would have on the other vehicle? I never stopped to look...
Ok thanks for the additional posts. I put some seafoam in the ports for a few minutes and it exposed a few things. Rusty valve stems. Not sure how deep but can inspect further later. I took a flashlight and could see light around one of the valves. What causes that? Deposits or something more...
You make sense. I have 6T valves laying around as well that I could use if these are rusted. Could this work instead? It's a bit cheaper and free shipping...
Guy must have been into using anything that he could. Never had any difficulties with the engine...just curious what I was driving around with. The rest are 6T. Thanks.
Thanks but....rrrrr I should have mentioned that this vehicle is only going to be driven about 400-1000 miles per year. Definitely not a daily. I have thought about it and I want to take my chances.I like the idea of the tool moving forward. It will help me learn a bit more on my junk heads...
I can try to get a better closeup of the stems. My phone is an older LG G2...way ahead of it's time but inferior these days.I did see a bit of rust on the inside of just one of the valves actually but I wasn't sure if it was the "stem" or not. I am assuming that the stem is the long stick...
Ready to get some pics up but I mounted the intake manifold up to it with a new gasket back then. I know that buying a new gasket is the least of my worries but wanted to know if you all would like me to remove the intake manifold gasket when I am taking pictures. Which makes me ask the next...
I have a few intake manifolds laying around and want to make sure that I have the best one for my GVR-4.. I know that there was a Cyclone IM and some early EVO ones. None of my intakes say Cyclone on them and all have EGR provisions.Other than that, are there any other differences or are they...
Yep I saw that too! By the way, until I can get pics of the head, I was able to identify it in one of his threads. I'd have to ship the head off somewhere since there is no one I really trust in this area which is a bit of a pain. I can pull the HLAs and followers off so there wouldn't be much...
Who stated that? I utilize the site's ignore function if a user and I don't get along and as a result am not always privy to what is requested. With that said, I'll go ahead and posts pics when I can. I'd still like to know what some generalities are until then. Thanks.
So what's the general rule for head cleanup if the rust isn't that bad AND I am going to take a chance on the head? Brake clean the whole thing and then oil all moving parts?
I had the below head shipped by Dale Morss (BogusSVO) about 4 years and 4 months ago for a project that never happened. It sat on the project DSM's head with the valve cover on it and cling wrap over the top to stop crap from falling in. The head sits with cleaned up lifters, rockers, and...
Guess this answers my other question. Seems I am likely better off with my 1g lifters then regardless of how I drive it....especially with the oil port mod.
