It is a N/T Eclipse hatchback with power everything, the harnesses both appear to be unmolested. Since we have the harnesses unwrapped, my son plans to remove A/C and P/S after we have this hurdle cleared. He is certain the elimination of them will allow a little more power to the ground and...
We unwrapped both harnesses underhood all the way to the firewall to find no cut wires and no plug for the crank sensor. is the 96 an odd duck? Is this car a bastid stepchild?
Thanks, Chip.I feel like this is what I'm doing.
:beatentodeath:
We pulled the intake last night hoping to find something we missed. There are no cut wires or terminal to plug into the crank sensor. Looks like we'll be unwrapping the engine loom and seeing if maybe it was cut and the tucked into the bundle of wires. Thanks for all your responses everybody...
That's awesome! This car isn't at the top of the list for got to get done right now, but as soon as we get it running, we'll be more inspired to get on the body work. My son has been through a few DSM's since I registered but this is the first one to really stump us. I lurk alot here and post...
Thanks, I've been looking through it and can't find a wiring diagram. It just seems odd that both Chiltons and Haynes would exclude the 96 Eclipse from their engine wiring diagrams. I'm sorry for putting you through all this and appreciate your help. I'm still looking through the link you gave...
We are working on my son's Eclipse built August 95. The dang thing is driving me crazy. The wires on the Cam sensor are White, Red and Black with grey. In both manuals I have they skip over the 96 Eclipse but list the 96 Talon. The wire colors don't match on the cam sensor on any of them. Any...
Never mind, I ended up applying some thick grease to the rollers so they wouldn't settle and stop the case halves from matching up. it slipped right together.Next question, What color neons under a red car?
My son has a 97 Eclipse N/T and we are attempting to reassemble the trans after installing new synchronizers and bearings. Everything fits right except the straight roller bearing pretty much in the middle of the case. We can't get the two halves to slide together because of it. Is there a trick...
He found the sunroof stashed in the shop attic and asked if he could have it, I said sure. He used the cordless Sawzall to get into the car. Looks like the car will have a sunroof this summer.
Early carbon fiber hood my buddy had sitting around and is going to hang on his wall. Beer, airbrush and artistic talent created the flames last night.Extra Talon bumper made for a cool bench light surroundOops, I guess I don't have the picture of the Talon bumper light surround. I...
All the electrical is out from under hood. We are going to repaint the car either yellow or Alsa Corp Chrome. He is still trying to decide which way to go. His girlfriend was in the car when we dragged it out of the shop and out of habit she locked the driver's side door. Obviously she didn't...
Power lock idea would be great if the entire driveline weren't sitting on the shop floor. I guess I will break out my lockout tools and give it a shot. Thanks for the replies, Chip.
Sorry for the hiatus. We have been increasing our collection of DSM vehicles and attempting to work on our son's blown up 97 420A.
My question is, Can I use a standard slim jim to unlock the doors on this car? Or do I need to have a lock smith come out to do it? I sure hope not since we are...
DO NOT MESS WITH ANY SCREWS ON THE THROTTLE BODY THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ADJUSTMENTS. You will create major problems for yourself, the PCM is programmed to fit the parameters the factory set. Is your brake pedal harder to push than normal? You might have a vacuum leak in the booster if so and it...
That is one clean front bumper modification. I do like the idea of opening it up evenly and so cleanly. This is one cool ass build.
Zero, thanks for posting the progress on this.
Thanks, my previous post regarding the simplicity wasn't aimed at the cars. It was meant to say if you follow procedure these cars are easy to maintain. My son failed to follow procedure the last time he had the head off. I think he had it apart four times. We finally broke down and bought all...
I am really liking the "simplicity" of these cars, if you follow the procedures. Just by not torquing the timing belt, it jumped time and did a buttload of damage.
I will try to get some pics tonight. My world jus got a little jacked up just now. Don't ever take a check for a vehicle, cash only, not even cashier's check. I am buying a pen for checking bills and dealing only in cash from now on. Sold a truck to a guy Saturday, established business account...
Which cylinder heads will interchange with the 420A head in my son's 97 Talon? I have tried the search feature and either I am so inept it doesn't return the right answer(highly likely) or this is a question that hasn't come up previously( I doubt that). His head is lunched, it holed number one...
The Parts America link worked very well. I have called Slo'Reilly and they are interchanging it to something in stock. If they tank it again, I will go to NAPA. I just don't shop our local NAPA store because i used to work there and swore I wouldn't buy anything there after I quit. The store...
My son's 97 Talon is giving us fits. We cannot manage to get the right gasket for the flange between the exhaust pipe and exhaust manifold. I have been through my federal Mogul book to no avail and Slo"Reilly has ordered four different ones for me. It is a flat gasket with two bolt holes. There...
I start with a wool pad and a cutting compound on oxidized or color sanded paint. I work my way up through the 3M Finesse It line and finish with a hand glaze and then several coats of Meguiars carnauba liquid wax. If you stop at the glaze and don't seal it with wax, the shine will be gone and...
Thanks for the compliment. It is a pigsty now. I have started filling it up with more stuff than I should have. My Triumph GT6 gonna be a pro street hotrod project and my 34 Chevy 3 window coupe mold fill up one bay. The Buick, TV/library is filling another bay. The work area is supposed to be...
They are eventually. He bought them for the right price when he bought the car. He is going to eventually buy some lighter wheels and tires. Those are heavy as all get.
Finally got the shiny stuff on it.http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=260955http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e121/cyclopsblown34/cjcar1.jpg

All the work was done by my son and me. We still need to color sand and buff it.
It was the switch, the pin that moves the "cam"inside the switch had broken off the lever. We ordered a new switch from the aprts store and it came in wrong twice, so my son took the switch apart and drilled the lever and installed a roll pin. It works fine now.
Thanks for all your replies, Chip.
Yes, I do mean the lever in the middle position. Supposedly there was no problem with it when his girlfriends brother parked the car other than a blown head gasket and missing front sheetmetal. We are finding various little irritations on the car as we get it to the point of driveable. I will...
Just the driver side no matter what position the switch is in left, right or center. If I turn the hazard flashers on, all the lights flash at a slower rate.
I am perplexed. My son's 97 Eagle Talon has a problem with the turn signals. When the key is on, the left turn signal flashes rapidly with the turn signal switch in neutral/park, when you hit the hazard flashers it slows down and both sides flash. If I pull the turn signal fuse it quits. With...
Check the thread/sticky on Eclipse/Talon headlights. It tells how to disassemble the headlights and reassemble them. Thanks to the thread, my son was able to disassemble his headlights, paint the interior body color and reassemble them. They look killer. I will post pics of the completed...
Replace the timing belt if the current owner hasn't replaced it. While you are at it, you may as well replace all the other belts on the engine. Follow the procedure outlined in the manual and you will have it on the money with little or no drama. Don't follow the procedure and you will more...
I am building a work area/paint booth. We will have probably 800.00 in the paint. It is all DuPont products. I am hopefully going to paint it this week. I took Wednesday and Thursday off to work on it. We already have about 40 hours in the car just fitting the fenders and front/rear fascias.
Thanks man, I will check out the site. I will let you know when I get caught up enough to paint another vehicle. I have just about finished assembling my work area/paint booth. These engines might be tough, but I can't fathom taking the abuse a turbo on a non turbo car can do to an engine.
The smiles are cute, but I think the dead horse is hilarious. He installed a turbo without upgrading the fuel pump? What a genius. Maybe you can tach him a few things.
This is his fourth car, possibly to be his first to be licensed in his name. As for the turbo, we may be getting Shadow98 down from Columbia to advise us. We do all our own work except machining and transmission work. We will paint the car ourselves and it should look killer when it is done...
My son and I are putting it together for a driver for him. He eventually wants to build a higher compression engine with different cams and other performance modifications. At the moment he is wanting to stay NA since the car obviously is not a stock turbo set up. Of course he will have the...
I have been absent because of too much stuff going on. We are making progress on the Talon and the garage redo. We lost our great dane last week to a nervous system disorder that has no definite cause but is a death sentence when diagnosed. Here are the carhole and car pics.
I am trying to figure out the vacuum line routing. They were all removed and I just need to figure out where all of them go. I have been unable to find a diagram for the non turbo 2.0 litre. It is a 97 Talon.
Thanks, Chip.
Will it go into gear while running? If not, I would venture to guess it is the clutch slave cylinder. I get to replace the one on my son's car tonight. As simple as these cars are to work on you should have no problem replacing it. Maybe try bleeding the slave cylinder before you consider...
