It has been awhile, but I will make the Official Announcement about RoadSurge

So it has been several years since I quit making the RoadSurge shift boxes and I will say that Forced Four has taken the market on the Shift Boxes for our cars :) I now have 2 kids and another on the way (Girl this time!) and an electronic repair shop I own and run which has taken up all my...

    giving autos a try

You should get a RoadSurge Shift box :) It has one key feature that makes driving with a shift box a little safer than others. You can actually set the downshift protection in each gear including from second to first. Downshifting at 4000 RPM into first gear causes catastrophe! Been there...

    98 gxs auto help

Yes, this is normal. The front wheels are probably spinning opposite directions which is the way the gearing is set up inside the transmission. The drive shaft should not spin with the rear wheels on the ground. If it did, the car would move and you would get hurt. You could jack up the back...

Auto. No Drive. Reverse works. Help!

MrNeedles, I will have to say that out of the past 13 years that I have owned DSM's, the Auto is by far the most reliable as long as you take care of it (Change fluid and don't brake boost every 5 minutes). I have destroyed over 8 manual transmissions in 6 years and finally got an Auto. So...

    RoadSurge 1G budget Build

You have to take the rack completely apart and cut off the piston on the shaft. Once you begin assembling it, put good grease on the gear and shaft to help keep it well lubricated. You also need to plug off the holes that power steering fluid went in or out of. I bought fittings from work...

Did you degree your aftermarket cams/gears

I was recently told by an engine dyno shop that setting the proper degree of the cams is highly recommended especially if you have ever had the block or head milled or are using a different head gasket than OEM. He went on to explain that with the cam gears just a bit out, it can cause the...

    RoadSurge 1G budget Build

Update! Just got done porting and polishing the second head....yes, the second :( I jumped right in and ported and polished the first head and found that the head was warped and way out of factory spec as far as head height. The other head is close enough to factory spec the adjustable cam...

    No second, no overdrive

It sounds like you have a bad solenoid which is either stuck or leaking. Have you Ohm'ed the solenoids yet? They should be really close to the same ohm reading. If you hear clicking in the transmission while switching the manual shifter with the engine off, the solenoids may still be ok but...

    Your most recent welding pics

I really need to buy me a TIG welder for home! Sucks having to drag pieces to work to weld them up and my 110 MIG is not that strong. Welds really good on thinner stuff though.
  12. EagleTalonTim

How do you weld flanges without warping?

If you burn a hole in your metal, you need to let it cool down before trying to fill it up. Once it is no longer glowing red hot, go at the spot again in circles adding filler metal little by little and reducing heat as it fills in Too hot, the weld will sag, too cold, the weld will not flow...

1G no spark, thinking about sending ECU to ECMLink

Does the CEL come on when you turn the key to the ON position but do not start it? If it comes on and stays on, something may be wrong with a sensor. If it comes on and goes off, everything checks out fine. If the CEL does not come on at all, the ECU is not powering up or it is dead.

    6 bolt head height question....

I don't want to run a composite unless there is absolutely no way I can run an mls. To run an mls, the surface needs to be flatter than .007 or .006 which is how much the recent head is off.
  18. EagleTalonTim

    6 bolt head height question....

I just remeasured everything on the head I was just using and another head I had from the previous build. The old head has all exhaust valve guides cracked so I bought another head from an individual for cheaper than the machine shop quoted me to do all the work to the other head. Here are my...

    6 bolt head height question....

I honestly don't know how much was taken off the block since the machine shop who milled everything first messed up and had to redo the surfaces due to the RA tolerance of an MLS. Where can I get a thicker head gasket? I was told by another machine shop that I could be experiencing "cross...

    6 bolt head height question....

Good evening all! I am in the middle of a build and am checking what the last machine shop did on the head of my car and found something interesting... The milled surface is not even and I think it is out of the service range :( Here are the readings I got :Transmission side (#4 piston...

Convert Hydraulic to Manual Steering rack?

Convert Hydraulic to Manual Steering rack?

I have my entire front end stripped and had the power steering rack already out. The conversion was not hard and took about 45 minutes since I was not 100% on what I was getting into :). Turned out good. I am waiting for some plugs to come in that I ordered from my work to cap off all the old...

Convert Hydraulic to Manual Steering rack?

Thank you much for the post! I think I will try the conversion. I have access to a TIG if I decide to weld the quill. I probably will since it only takes a few minutes and I can weld it on my lunch break at work. It also gives me a little more piece of mind that it will not break on me since...

Painting the body under the hood. What Paint?

This is by no mean a show car since I am pretty much stripping it to race it now that I have another DD. I painted my valve cover with rustoleum spray paint we had left at my work and it turned out great. 5 light coats of paint and 5 light coats of clear. I killed the clear coat when I tried...

Painting the body under the hood. What Paint?

I am looking to paint under the hood of my car while I have everything stripped out of it. What I am wondering is what paint to go with. I would like something durable that can hold up to oil getting on it and basic under the hood fluids possibly coming in contact with it. I am also looking...

    Your most recent welding pics

My third time at welding aluminum. I don't think it turned out too bad considering it was welded with an Arc welder, a separate Freq box and a "Clip on" TIG setup :) I also weld stainless, but I don't have any pictures of anything since it is all from work... maybe one day I will get a pic.

What is this expoxy like stuff in my ecu?

A little excessive on the solder, but they look like they will hold just fine. I would run it like it is and not worry about it :)
  36. EagleTalonTim

What is this expoxy like stuff in my ecu?

I would think it was because of vibration. That is really the only reason why the putty is used. It is an excessive amount on there for sure! For such small caps and the little amount of vibration they would see, I could not see a reason why they would be installed especially be a "through...
  37. EagleTalonTim

What is this expoxy like stuff in my ecu?

Yes, remove the circuit board from the case and look under it to see the solder joints where the capacitors go through the board. If they don't look like the rest of the solder joints, it may need to be repaired. It is a simple fix if you have a solder iron and some solder flux (Not plumbing...
  38. EagleTalonTim

What is this expoxy like stuff in my ecu?

Lol, wow! That is the first time I have ever seen anyone do that before. It looks like the glue they used to hold down components or keep them from vibrating too much. Apparently, someone has replaced the caps in your ECU and decided to make sure they were held in really good! I, personally...

    speed density on link only?

Save up and buy ECMlink! It is worth it in the end! If you are impatient, I have a 2G MAF and an SAFC2 if you want them. The MAF needs to be cleaned, but it works. PM me if you want it cheap.

Low head oil pressure? Lifters will not stop ticking.

This engine is not stock and it is for sure a 6 bolt. It is a JDM engine and it still has the cyclone on it which I will eventually do away with. I crank walked my 7 bolt years ago and bought this 6 bolt to take it's place.
  42. EagleTalonTim

Low head oil pressure? Lifters will not stop ticking.

It is a new head. Had the head milled for MLS and all the new valves seated and installed. Nothing else was done to the head.If I am not mistaken, I have read that the stock HLA regulator dumps off extra oil once a certain pressure is reached. I believe this is done by port sizes and...
  43. EagleTalonTim

Low head oil pressure? Lifters will not stop ticking.

The head is for sure a 6 bolt head since the APR's fit in the holes just fine. I am really worried about having to pull half my motor apart just to check it for gunk. The oil pressure gauge is connected at the stock turbo oil feed port. The turbo is being fed from the OFH right now.
  44. EagleTalonTim

Low head oil pressure? Lifters will not stop ticking.

Yes, both bearings were flipped when I did the BS elimination. I remember this since I had to borrow a bearing remover tool from a friend for the center front bearing. The next thing I am going to try is to replace the front head bolt with a stock one to see if that changes anything. Will...

Low head oil pressure? Lifters will not stop ticking.

Yes, I was running 1G lifters. I am now running 2G lifters.Upon further testing, the oil pressure in the head goes to 0 at idle after driving for more than 30 minutes. I have checked the oil flow in the head by removing the oil fill cap and watching the cam lobes being oiled through the...

Yes, I checked the regulator and replaced it with another I have with no change :( Both were torqued to OEM torque specs.

Low head oil pressure? Lifters will not stop ticking.

Oil pump was brand new OEM when motor was rebuilt and has about 30K miles on it. 2 years of driving 40 miles one way to work.... puts a bunch of miles on this thing for sure! If oil pump was out, would that not make the bottom end pressure low as well? I have had to clip the spring to bring...
  48. EagleTalonTim

Low head oil pressure? Lifters will not stop ticking.

Finally got the oil pressure gauge installed to see oil pressure at the head. The pressure is read at the turbo oil feed port. My turbo oil is coming from the OFH. Here we go...Cold start (idling): head oil pressure is ~10 psi and the bottom end oil pressure is ~40 psi Engine fully warmed...
  49. EagleTalonTim

Low head oil pressure? Lifters will not stop ticking.

Sealing the turbo feed in the head would increase pressure, but I am not sure it would fix everything. Now.... I have to find that little bolt that seals the head oil feed.... Don't want bugs crawling in there while I wait for my gauge stuff to come in.
  50. EagleTalonTim

Low head oil pressure? Lifters will not stop ticking.

Right now, the turbo is feeding from the head because the last turbo blew due to high oil pressure at the OFH. The oil pressure is fixed in the bottom end, so I feel safer re-installing the turbo oil feed line to the OFH. I will probably do that tomorrow since the new gauge will tap into the...
