  1. 2G Base Timing Incorrect

Awesome, thanks for the information guys. If mechanical valve timing is fine, then I'll just add the missing degrees across the whole table and be done with it for now--maybe I'll do a blacktop CAS in the future. Presumably crank timing is still off in relation to the cams, but 3deg is within...
  2. 2G Base Timing Incorrect

I was under the impression that the ECU used the cam sensor to determine when to fire the coils and injectors, and given ignition timing is non-adjustible on a 2g, if I'm seeing 2deg with a light and the timing connector grounded, wouldnt that mean the intake cam is 3deg retarded from the crank...
  3. 2G Base Timing Incorrect

That's a fair point. It's hard to view the damper past all the accessories. What's the best way to view it? from above or through the wheel well?
  4. 2G Base Timing Incorrect

If I wanted to fix this issue, what would I need to do? I can bandaid it with ECMLink, adding the missing timing across the entire map, but that wont fix that valve timing is 3deg or so off in comparison to the crank. To fix this for good I would need adjustable cam gears?
  5. 2G Base Timing Incorrect

I'm the second owner, it came to me at 100k, and I've had it for the last 15 years--not 100% certain but reasonably certain it's never had the engine apart. Not much had been done to it at all when it came to me. It did have a timing belt change at least once as it had a NAPA belt on it years...
  6. 2G Base Timing Incorrect

Engine has never been taken apart--still got it's factory head gasket.
  7. 2G Why is my timing belt riding like this?

This was my thought too. The car wasn't with me for it's first timing belt change, but I did the second and third, and despite changing to various different brands of components, and replacing the idler arm, as long as the car has been mine this is where the timing belt has been on the gears...
  8. 2G Base Timing Incorrect

Replaced it with a new OEM balancer about a year ago. Shows no signs of cracking or separation. For lack of a better idea for what could be wrong mechanically, I added 2deg of timing to the entire timing table in ECMLink. This should be an acceptable solution, right?
  9. 2G Base Timing Incorrect

I just did a timing belt change on my 96 TSIAWD and I was verifying base timing and I noticed it's off. I checked ground timing connector in ECMLinkv3, and used a timing timing light. ECMLink was reading 5deg but I was seeing the mark just off "T," or what i presume is around 2deg.I checked...
  10. 2G Why is my timing belt riding like this?

Yup, it still happens after the engine has ran; in fact, it was like this before I did the 120k service on this car back in 2014, and it's ran like that for roughly 20-30k miles. I followed the procedure in the manual exactly, and had about 4mm clearance between the body of the hydraulic...
  11. 2G Why is my timing belt riding like this?

Brand new OEM. The shaft on the engine mount bracket the tensioner arm rides on was in perfect condition too--not so much as a score mark.
  12. 2G Why is my timing belt riding like this?

So the water pump went out on my 96 TSIAWD and I'm in the process of replacing it and all the timing components while I'm in there. Is it normal that my timing belt rides so far to one side of the cam gears? It's always been like this, and I'm not sure what, if anything, is wrong. Also notice...
  13. Vanity Plates

    no CRNKWLK? :p
  14. 2G Evo 8 motor swap: 2g ecu

That's a USDM Valve cover, at least. Also looks like a 2g manifold. Unless only the engine hand head were swapped and the rest retained, i doubt this is an evo engine. They usually turn up in America as fully dressed longblocks.
  15. Presents from previous owners

Ha! My '96 came with a FWD spare and the trunk carpet from a 1g??
  16. Presents from previous owners

When i bought my 97 the previous owner's son has fancied himself to be a mechanic. Told me he had changed the timing belt just before they put the car up for sale. Was pulling out of my driveway one day and CLUNK, something sounded like it fell in the engine bay. Pop the hood the engine was...
  17. 2G Low voltage in ECMLink but perfect at alt and batt???

Sounds like you got a large amount of voltage drop between battery positive and and the ECU. I would first suspect those two white wires that run from the fuse box to the positive battery terminal, those love to corrode, even on my southern car. With the engine running, and the electrical system...
  18. Cant crank car

What do you mean by a little noise? Does it sound like the starter is trying? If so, i would check the main engine ground (located on the upper bolt on the starter from the factory). If it just sounds like a relay clicking I would check your getting signal from the key at the starter.
  19. Security Systems to Stop Your RIde from Being Jacked

Nah, the door switches have nothing to do with the immobilizer on a 2G. There's a theft alarm relay on the ground side of the starter relay on the clutch switch wire on a manual car, and on the neutral safety switch on an automatic. If a key isn't in the ignition then the theft-alarm relay wont...
  20. Security Systems to Stop Your RIde from Being Jacked

The starters on these cars are hard to get to, so you'd probably do fine with a well hidden killswitch that interrupts the signal going from the key to the starter. Also remember that 2gs have factory alarms and immobilizer, as basic as they are (just detects presence of a key in the lock...
  21. 1G 4 inch speaker suggestions/recommendations

It's been about 15 years since I had my 1g, but I remember also having rockford fosgate 4" speakers in the dash, and they fit without modification. I would check out crutchfeild for a RF speaker that has a depth that would work.
  22. 420A Wire Location

It's for suppression of electrical interference from the ignition. You'd pick up the coils as interference in the radio without that wired in and grounded to the intake manifold/head.
  23. Resolved Finding previous owner Killswitch?

I had my 97 Talon wiring manual handy. Here's the headlight diagram if you need it:
  24. Resolved Finding previous owner Killswitch?

Are you sure this thing has a kill switch? Most kill switches/immobilizers will interrupt signal coming from the key to the starter, which doesn't seem to be the case here as it will attempt to crank, but acts like its not getting enough power. It's a very strange setup where the lights would...
  25. 2G Broken coolant thermostat housing

    Pics of the carnage?
  26. What is this called / Where does this go / What does this do? [MERGED]

Anti-theft system is armed and disarmed by locking and unlocking the doors, not just on the keyfob. You'll see a green security light on the dash when you lock the doors.
  27. Shipping Delays at STM?

I've been waiting for over a month for an order from them. I emailed for a status update and they said they're having a hard time getting things from Japan with the pandemic. Took them about 3 days to get back with me.
  28. 420A Building boost at idle?

What are you using to measure boost? Have you confirmed you're actually making boost at idle? You should be able to disconnect any vacuum line or intake hose while at idle and hear the pressure loss if so.
  29. EVO 8 block 2G head

Is it even possible to mount an Evo8 block in a turbo 2g frame without major modification? As far as I know, its impossible to run a 2g head on an Evo8 block. I suspect the guy was telling tales, friend.Mind snapping some pics of the engine bay?
  30. DSM vs EVO3

Ah, thank you for the corrections; I had completely forgotten about the Evo3 piston issue. I believe the Evo3 had slightly higher compression, and the Evo4 with the sirius2 engine returned to the previous ratio, and they stuck with it (9.0:1 vs 8.8:1). 1G DSMs were also 9.0:1, and the galant...
  31. DSM vs EVO3

In terms of suspension, a 1g is likely closer to the McPherson setup on a early Evo. The 2g suspension is based on the 94+ galant VR-4: double wishbone front and rear--a superior on-road suspension design to both the 1g DSM and the early Evo. Neither generation DSM, or any generation Evo makes a...
  32. Need a dsm buddy in St Petersburg for TB change.

I live not far from you actually: I'm pretty sure I've seen your car in your driveway. Off 16th street? I'm super busy for the next week or two, but I could likely help you after. PM me.
  33. The Evo returns!

Topical: https://www.motor1.com/news/356852/mitsubishi-lancer-evolution-return-rumor/Rumored to come back as a sedan. Not sure how i feel about it being based on a Renault, even if it is a damn good car.
  34. 8 year hiatus

What would a 4g67 do with a DOHC hyundai head from an early 90s car like Jaffro's got?
  35. 8 year hiatus

Whoa, 1.8L 1gs still exist? Suspension issues would be what I'd look for on a car that old. Unless it's had work, all the bushings and balljoints will likely be shot.If the rattle is not internal to the motor, maybe the motor mounts are bad and causing something to rub when it moves around?
  36. The Evo returns!

Article is from 2017, but it wouldn't surprise me if they reintroduce the evolution brand for a crossover
  37. I may have just joined a cult thanks to my new eclipse thats 10 years older than I am?

Welcome to the family. What type of eclipse you have? Pics, please :)
  38. Say something good about your car

These cars had such a terrible reputation for reliability in the early days. I've been daily driving DSMs for most of my adult life; I've put over 100k between the two of them. I think those of us still caring for these cars some 30 years after the first one hit dealer lots have proven it's more...
  39. 2gb OEM Exhaust

Vibrant makes dual tip mufflers which are relatively close to the stock look: https://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1527_1032_1535_1052&products_id=11&osCsid=c200360eb0d079153728339e9f72d47e
  40. 2G Spoiler questions

Unfortunately, a 97+ hatch without a spoiler wont have the sheet metal mounts for the high rise spoiler. You could drill holes in it for a 95-96 spoiler though. It's held on by studs and nuts and there's no special reinforcing that I can recall. You'd also have to drill a larger hole for the...
  41. 2G Spoiler questions

Yup if your hatch is 2Gb you can only use a 97+ spoiler. The 95-96 style was held in by small holes in the hatch that studs on the spoiler passed through, where as the 97+ hatch has mounting points in the sheet metal on either side on the rear window.
  42. 2G Spoiler questions

Yup this is correct. If I'm not mistaken, all but very base 2Ga Talons had the thumbnail spoiler, all of them black because all Talons had a black greenhouse. Not sure about the 2Gb high-rise spoiler--that might be turbo only. Also the spoilers are not interchangeable between the two. The...
  43. 2G Turn signal/ Hazard NOT working

Unrelated to the current topic, but it's been awhile since I seen a DSM firewall information plate that wasn't so faded it was unreadable. Neat.
  44. 1G Doorman control arms NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS

In my experience, Dorman products are absolute garbage. I have a 2g, but i've had similar bad experience with aftermarket control arms, even the more expensive Moog Problem Solver parts. Ball-joints and bushings failed in less than 30k miles. I ended up going back to OEM.For whatever reason...
  45. Exploring new platform

At minimum it's been 20 years. All the defective motors that were going to crankwalk have done it by now, so don't worry about that, just focus on getting a motor built by someone that knows 4G63s so a mistake on the part of an inexperienced builder isn't attributed to "crankwalk".
  46. 1G Rebuilding Cam Angle Sensor

I know its a little late since you're in the process of reconditioning your old one, but if you're looking for a place to source new black-top CASes, you might find this thread useful: https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/alternative-oem-1g-black-top-cas-source.517311/
  47. Trouble with boost control. 2g dsm ecm link v3.

If I remember correctly, the BCS is ground side switched: when the ECU grounds the BCS at a certain duty cycle, the BCS opens bleeding off some air, allowing the turbo to build more than wastegate pressure. When the BCS sees either no power or ground, it fails in a closed position as a...
  48. Unknown part of blow off system

The BOV should be run from a port on the front of the intake manifold itself, not the throttle body. Not sure what is leaking behind it, you'd have to take a picture. Probably remnants of the emission system--the EGR system or purge control valve.Unfortunately, you'll need to find another...
  49. Unknown part of blow off system

That's an oldschool manual boost controler. Your manual boost controller, nor anything else should be on your BOV vacuum source. You should move that elsewhere.
  50. N/A 4g63

Oh yeah, absolutely; I see where you're coming from. Every time I see a mint body 420a 2g in the junkyard I have that little pang of regret that I can't save it and drop a 4g in it.
