A quick check on the pump is to start the car and put it in neutral. Pull a cooler line off and see if any fluid comes out. It's messy, but cheaper than buying a gauge, and gives you instant results. Another pump killer that's often overlooked is the torque convertor bushing that's supposed to...
I think that with a little set up help, anybody can use the Tuner Pro method of tuning. There's enough discussion and BIN files on the Yahoo Groups DSM-ECU for the N/A's. He could be up and running with just a couple of hours worth of reading. All he really has to do is realise what good advice...
These cars use a waste spark type of ignition system. Swap wires 1 and 4 at the coil (same coil) and see if the result moves to #1 or if it stays at #4. This should help you narrow it down to ignition or a cylinder issue.Dale. Youand I were typing at the same time LOL. I had the same...
I just wanted to add that the transmission (Chrysler a604) doesn't have to be pulled to replace the gears. They are under the black cover that you see from the driver's fenderwell.
Did you ever get this resolved? I had another thought about the solenoid pack. The design of the solenoid pack was changed in 2001. All new solenoid packs come with only 1 gasket (that is different) and you are suppossed to throw away the spacer plate and gaskets that were originally on the...
Replace the input speed sensor. When they fail, the TCU will give you "incorrect gear ratio x" because it cannot calculate which gear you are in without the input speed sensor. It also takes a while for the TCU to realise that the sensor is not reading. Each gear requires two internal elemants...
I hate to say this, but check your cam belt timing. I've heard a similar noise when an intake cam jumped three teeth. Also, when the engine is running, if you take off the oil cap, do you see oil flowing?
From your video, it doesn't sound like piston slap. It sounds like you don't have any oil pressure to your head. Is your oil pressure gauge showing good pressure? What kind of engine set up did you build? Mods?
Yup. That's the one. Leave it alone. From your pictures, I can see that there is no balance shaft behind it. When the balance shafts are removed a stub is bolted in the oil pump driven gear in place of the rear balance shaft. There is no reason to remove the bolt to the stub as it will not...
Don't worry about that special lock thing. Your balance shafts have been removed. The bolt behind that is only holding a stub shaft in place for your oil pump. Just leave it alone.Get the crank bolt out and the two gears off and the cover will come off.
You can use a prybar or a long extension to lock the crank. Put whatever your using across the main webbings on the block and the crankshaft counterwieghts. You can then use a 1/2 in breaker bar to remove the bolt from the front of the crankshaft. The other two gears and plate will slide right...
Your transmission is called an a604. One of the most common things to go bad is the input speed sensor. I'll tell you though, you're chances of fixing this thing without scanning the TCU are slim. It could be anything. Blown fuse (in PDC under the hood, near the battery), relay (above the brake...
Personally, I've seen bad lower ball joints (both) cause the spindle to move outward enough to cause this. I would check the ball joints and remove the axle to check that the c-clip isn't damaged. Also check your axle seal. A leaking axle seal can destroy your transmission if it goes un-noticed.
The two also use a different engine management system and the transmission bellhousings are different also. If you are going to do a full drivetrains and electronics swap, then I'd do lke your buddy and go after the Evo swap.
The Stratus and Sebring, as well as the minivans came with a 420a styled 2.4l that your head will fit on. Be carefull, though, the valve reliefs in the pistons are cut differently on the engines that the intake is on the front of the engine. I don't know if it'll make any difference, but it's...
I second the opinion about the clutch pedal assembly. This is a weak spot for our cars. If you look at the header bar at the top of the page you'll see an ad from ShepTrans. $120.00 plus your core and they'll send you a repaired one. Not a bad deal.
If I'm unstanding correctly, the torque convertor is too far away from the flexplate. If you pull the t/c forward a 1/4 in then you'll disengage the pump gear and cause a no movement condition. If the trans is correct and the t/c is not engaged in the pump (only 2 clicks) then there will be no...
The SL2 has a higher exhaust flow rate (basically the 20g exhaust side) but still has a quick spool rate because of the lighter wheel on the intake side. I DD'd mine for about a year. Damn near instant spool with a full boost of 32 psi around 4200rpm. I'm sure that there's a lot better now, but...
I don't have the maps, but I've had this turbo (as well as other FP turbos) for a couple of years now. This is a great turbo. You will not be disappointed with it's performance.
You're right...it's not the fastest, it's not the first. But the fact is that you just took a 21 year old car down 1/4 mile and had a blast! This hobby is about having fun. Sometimes it all gets lost in the pursuit of speed, but everyone on this site started somewhere, soooo.... GOOD STUFF! Keep...
Check your shifter bushings, also. Shifter axis bushings in the assembly, cable bushings, cables, everything. I've seen the ends break on the cables (at the transmission) and it cause the cables to bind.
Unfortunately the pump bushing IS most likely shot. The only way to really find out is to pull the transmission and remove/disassemble the pump to figure it out. At that point, though, you'll be replacing all of the gaskets, seals, orings anyway. Be sure to check your t/c for leaks too. I've...
I see that you're talking about an "auto swap". Was this a 5 speed car that you converted to auto?If so, then I'm betting that you didn't install the crankshaft bushing. With out it the torque convertor will not be centered or supported and will destroy the pump bushing. I don't have the...
I can't speak about the billet cover convertors, but the OEM replacement lineup is painted blue. I used the OEM line in my transmission shop for about three years with no problems. Personnally, I'd prefer a Precision to a Dacco or other aftermarket stock replacement. The only reason that I...
Precision torque convertors are painted a light blue. They are a "stock replacement" type of aftermarket torque convertor rebuilding company. They usually have a small white sticker with a build date on the face of the convertor. I've never had any problems with Precision convertors, if that's...
I'm going to point out that the head gaskets, revised or not, will still eventually leak. I've replaced hundreds (yes, hundreds) at the Chrysler dealership. A failing cam sensor will leak in the same spot and the valve cover gaskets have been known to leak, all in the same manner. Start from the...
I hate to be the one to tell you this but you should really check your compression at this point. IMO the ecu looks just fine. As someone already stated, the ecu's come with a coating (call it clear coat, if you will) to help against damage. The last time that I heard someone describe noises...
x2Sign up with yahoo group dsm-ecu. That's where you can find all of the chip files (free!)Use Tuner Pro (FREE!) with your Ostrich. I have had a lot of fun and completely changed my perspective on how to "tune" a car by playing with this. If you play with it for just a little while, you'll...
I got the impression that you were going to pull the transmission, so I would say that the best way is to remove the disc from between the pressure plate and the flywheel, then slide it on the input shaft. I'd also check to make sure that the disc is in properly, as well as evenly torquing the...
have you checked to make sure that the clutch disc is not binding on the input shaft? If the disc does not move freely, then it will not disengage properly since it can't move away from the flywheel when the pressure plate releases.
Just to add to what John has already said; you will destroy your pump if you keep running the car with the filter stopped up. Did you change the filter and fluid after changing the end clutches? If not, then it could very well be the carnage from the first end clutches failing that is plugging...
Had one (family, that is)...... the kids couldn't stand the damn minivan, wife couldn't stand the DSM (or me).The kids love riding in the DSMs on the weekends (child visitation periods).BTW, I'm 39. I've been working on them since they were new (at the dealership), I've owned my Laser RS...
The P0700 code is a general request from the tcu to the ecu to turn on the CEL. Take your car to some place that can scan the tcu. BTW - the valve bodies in our cars suck. If everything checks out electronically, then have your transmission rebuilder install the TransLabs shift kit that's...
Check your connections at the battery. There are 3 leads that come off of the + post. If it or the - side are loose then that will cause all kinds of random problems.
RBWTRANS - Rick Barker's Wholesale TRANSmissions. When I first joined this site I owned my own transmission shop. Since then, I've closed the shop and am currently a shop foreman for another transmission shop in town.
Valvetrain noise is very common. I'd go ahead a do all of your maintenaince items first. Timing belt and tensioner, water pump, synthetic oil change, ect., or you woln't be liking this thing long. These cars have interferance engines (the valves bend if the timing belt breaks.) With the age on...
Auto guy here. I've been rocking a '92 2wd auto Laser RS since '99. I just built a FWD trans for it using the Alto redline clutches and treated plates with the high energy band and a modified TransLabs shift kit. I also installed a Phantom Grip to lose the one-wheel-wonder aspect of the FWD. My...
