Problem solved. The injectors were actually working but their pulse signal was extremely short. The reason for that was because the coolant sensor was open...telling the ECU that the engine was hot and needed very little fuel to start.-Dave
Yes, the pump maintains pressure during cranking (I open a fuel port required for racing) and it also maintains pressure during run.
The difference being during crank the injectors won't fire.
During run, the injectors will fire if I turn the motor over (turning the cam sensor by hand) like...
Gentlemen,I have an extremely difficult no-start condition on my rally car ('90 Talon tsi) I wanted to throw by you.
I haven't rallied this car since 2006...it's been stored and not running since then. This spring I patched everything up and tried to start it...here is the problem:
The...
BIR has completed a new 2.5 mile track and is christening it with a 40th Anniversary weekend. There will be motorcycle and road racing along with nostalgia, demonstrations and live music, etc.
The cool thing is that you can parade, lap or race (requiring comp license) for $20/day!!
Fri is test...
Again, I am jealous. Road Atlanta is on my short list of tracks I must race on. Glad to see you like the 16G...IMHO it is the best combination for road racing. What did you set the boost at?
Glad to see the equipment holds up too. It sounds like you get the same feedback I do concerning the...
Unfortunately I don't think I can afford any more races this season and I should have the Championship wrapped up by now so I think I will replace the door, paint the car and try to sell it. I want to go to something else in a different class (something with numerous competitors). Maybe an Evo...
NASA Pro Race Elkhart Lake, WI
August 2,3 2008Pre-Race: By this time I had 2 decent Hooisers, 2 decent Toyos, 1 worn out Toyo and 1 Toyo with a blister. The race car needed some new shoes. I ordered 4 new Toyos to be picked up at the track. This is also the first event I wear a HANS device. I...
I'll probably be tapped out financially by the time SATCARS's season starts but I would like to run Blackhawk at least once as NASA doesn't seem to run there anymore.
I'll put myself in the 'maybe' column.
(Assuming they don't make me go to comp school again!) :p
I'm jealous...I would love to run that track but it's a bit too far away for me. I have the opposite problem you have; my water temps never rise above 190 while my oil temps always flirt with 270.
Maybe I'll see you at Hastings next year.-Dave

Thanks Eddie. I believe they feel that since I was alone in my class that day that it didn't matter where they put me. Since I finally complained I don't think it will happen again.
NASA Pro Race Grattan, MI
June 07,08 2008Pre-Race: To follow the technical regulations I had to re-wire the kill switch to include the alternator output. A 11 hour tow in tremendous cross winds brought me to Grattan, MI...a few miles east of Grand Rapids.Saturday:Practice: I have heard...
Haha...I don't think they make a Threadlocker strong enough for me!
Thanks much...it was more fun than I thought it would be. I enjoyed the infield here more than Iowa...but I enjoyed the banking at Iowa more.
You folks had some serious weather over the weekend!Unfortunately one thing NASA does not spend much time doing is
advertising themselves and making locals aware of the races. :(All you would have had to do is spend $10 at the gate for the
whole weekend...you could crew, work or just...
Quick update from grattan raceway:Practice: went off at turn 9 due to pad knockback and too much air in the calipers. AWD got me out :)Qual: Qualed 5th overall...no one else in my class.Race: finally find a good line but only gain .5 seconds. Finish 2nd overall, first in class. The...
Gateway International Speedway
Apr 26,27 2008Pre-race: During the off season I gutted the doors and removed the side windows. With the help of Metric Auto we yanked the ABS, re-plumbed almost the entire braking system and added a rear brake adjuster.
After much consternation I decided to leave...
NASA Nationals at Mid-Ohio
Lexington, OH
Sep 13-16, 2007Pre-Race: Arrived at Lexington OH about 15:00 on Wednesday after a 14 hour tow from Minneapolis. My father was with me as crew. I brought almost every DSM spare I had
(which is alot) along with fluids and tools. I have my old (but still...
I'm a firm believer in the Evo III setup for road racing..I get a nice pull off the corners with little lag. And so far it has been very reliable. And apparently you can boost the hell out of it though I have no experience with this. There may be a better setup out there bit I wouldn't go any...
NASA Road America
Aug 4,5 2007Pre-Race: I have driven a track day here in the early 90's with a Fox chassis Mustang. It was a short stint when I realized how puny my brakes really were. What I did learn was that Road America IMO is the Big Kahuna of all American tracks...it demands all the...
Autobahn Country Club
Joliet, IL
July 21, 22 2007Pre-Race: Since the car passed tech and performed so well at the last race, I didn't see a need to change the car in any way at this time. After an oil change and tire rotation I was ready to go.Friday: I couldn't find anyone to help me crew...
Ooops...you're right. Sorry I forgot the cost of license itself. Membership is also like $40 or so...and you get a free copy of Grassroots Motorsports.
Thanks for keeping me honest...don't want to sticker shock anyone on the forums ;)
IMO, NASA by far, has the cheapest and easiest process to get your comp license.
The actual cost for Comp School is around $300.00. This doesn't include how many HPDE events they would like you to run in...this will vary depending on NASA region and your experience level. Before this latest...
FYI for any NASA racers...TOPEKA, Kan. (May 9, 2008) Sports Car Club of Americas Board of Directors approved today at its face-to-face meeting in Topeka the approval of National Auto Sport Association licenses for Regional Club Racing competition, effective immediately. The NASA...
Thanks guys! I appreciate it. My sponsor likes to see this as well. I'm doing my best to keep the blog updated...I hope to have it up to date in 2 weeks after the upcoming Grattan race.To be fair I can't honestly say both my DSM's are running at the same time...I steal some parts as spares...
Mid America Motorplex
June 30, July 1Pre-Race: Considering how much fun I had at the last NASA event in HPDE 4. I was really looking forward to push my DSM even harder at a true race. Normally a driver should spend at least 4 weekends in HPDE 4 before attempting Comp school but I somehow...
Thanks Eddie! Those rovals are quite the experience! What I didn't mention was I argued with my instructor a bit about the best line coming into the infield off the oval. After riding with me he didn't argue with me anymore. There was only one accident on thes track during the weekend but that...
NASA Road Racing
Iowa Speedway
April 28, 29Pre-Event: Rally racing was becoming a bit too expensive for me with the recent insurance increases. I now had a wandering eye toward road racing. Coincidentally NASA had started a Midwest region in 2006. I purchased a white '93 GSX from Texas with a...
Sno Drift Pro Rally
Atlanta, MI
Jan 27-28 2006
Pre-Race: I have had a fair amount of success at Sno-Drift so I like to run in this event when I can. I also wanted to race in a rally run by the new Rally America sanctioning body. I pulled the car out from under its cover and dusted her off...
Lake Superior Pro Rally
Oct 21, 22
Houghton, MIPre-Race: Due to finances and more traveling I was unable to rally for a full season. The last rally at Shooting Star was disastrous...we DNF'ed on the first stage with a hole in the side of the transmission. Over the summer Chris from Metric...
Shooting Star Clubrally
Mahnomen, MN
June 9, 2005Pre Race: I took 2004 off from racing so I could recover financially and take some vacation. Not to mention the new WRX was the class of the field in American rallying...due to numerous rule changes within the PGT class, rally was becoming even...
I have tried a couple different gasket types, including OEM but no luck yet.gst_racer just gave me an idea though...what if I weld a bung to the turbo end?
I'll have to figure out which rod to use and not melt the internals but it just...might...work!Thanks for the feedback guys.
The leak is coming from the flange on the turbo side. I have cracked my share of factory lines so I know what that looks like ;)
The pan side is not an issue. (today anyway)I love the idea of the fittings and the stainless line but I don't know if that will fix my particular problem. Even...
I've done plenty of searching on this issue and I have been using hi-temp RTV goop on the oil pan and turbo side. It works ok but I have to reapply between every race. The turbo is at full tilt boogie for a total of 160 minutes after an event and even the best RTV doesn't last the whole weekend...

Pre-Race: Since this rally has the well-earned description as the "Oldest, Toughest, Meanest" Pro Rally in the country, I spent some extra time prepping the car before the event. The "clutch" damage at the previous race was...
Thanks man, so far so good.
I didn't remove the steering wheel lock out of laziness.
My kill switch switches the batt ground and fuel pump ground...not good enough for NASA.
I will have to rewire the switch for the hot side of the battery and the alternator output.I have 3 or 4 weeks to...

100 Acre Wood National Club Rally
Feb 25-26, 2003
Salem, MOPre-Race: Outside of a punctured tire, bent rim and tweaked fender, the car needed nothing for the next rally. This would be the second year this event would decide the National ClubRally Championships. Because I finished 2nd in PGT...
The New Season:The Car: After looking back at last year's disappointing season, I found the car performed fairly well once it was sorted out. Therefore I didn't see much need for too many performance improvements...not to mention the PGT rules package severely limited what could be done to the...
What about welding the new pedal assembly before you install it??
Eh? Best of both worlds right?
(Sorry, I'm being a bit sarcastic as I have dealt with this before as well)
