On my 1996 GST I have a functional A/C system with a bad pressure switch on the top of the compressor. This was verified by a mechanic as we charged the system and he ran some kind of a bypass blowing ice cold air. My question is, how can I do this myself? I had the system leak tested and filled...
Yes I mean the Los Angeles area. I am staying at a friends house in Santa Clarita but I am going to a show at the Key Club in Hollywood Sat. night. My best bet is to just bring him another one, put it together, and drive it leaking oil or not. I havent done a compression test yet, but I will do...
I have worked on the car myself and I am completely stumped as to how its leaking the oil. I saw no cracks in the mani and the gasket is 6 months old and still looks like new. Any time under boost it just sprays oil out tho, after a good pressure wash and a trip around the block with no boost...
I took my car into the shop recently because I was putting in 3 quarts of oil a week into my 90 Laser RS to get to work and back. It turns out my valve cover was warped. The problem is, the owner of the shop tells me that there are different valve covers that he can order and he must find a...
Whenever I go on a spirited drive, my motor seems to spit oil out of the fill cap on top of the valve cover. I messed around with an STi on the way home yesterday and sure enough, I check at the gas station and I have about 6 capfuls of oil puddled in the recessed part of the valve cover. I have...
1. You are missing the filter itself as well as the basket that holds the filter in place.2. The BOV can recirc anywhere between the mass air sensor and the intake manifold3. On my car those 2 lines wrap back around up by the intake plenum. I am at work or I would go take a few pictures for...
the only time i have had a car crank really fast like you described was when I had a loss of compression in 2 cylinders, it made the motor turn over much easier
grounds are clean and corrosion free, everything is tight and I unplugged and replugged in a bunch of harness connectors in the random hope it would help.
also im lookin at my mitchell on demand and it shows a "theft control unit" AFAIK I have no stock security but is there some way that I could have it and it got triggered shutting power down to everything?
Ok just went out and double checked everything...it looks like the 80 amp fusable link (alternator) in the passenger side fuse box is discolored. The metal doesnt look broken but the discoloration makes me think its blown. I was trying to pull it out but had no luck. Do I have to unbolt the two...
My coworker and I hop in my car and head off to get lunch today. After lunch we come out, get in the car and everything is fine. As soon as I go to crank the starter I hear every relay in the car click and the entire thing dies. Not even so much as emergency flashers are working. I let it sit...
My factory turbo finally bit the dust after 140k miles so I picked up an evo3 16g. I know im not gonna see a power upgrade without any supporting mods but it was the right price and had a warranty :thumb:My problem is this: after the turbo install whenever my passenger side rad fan kicks on...
the sweet smell is normally associated with antifreeze....also I dunno how it is on a DSM but my last car all the dummy lights would come on when an alternator was goin out...it was even listed in the manual.
Well i guess im gonna go ahead and pick up a turbo when I get paid on friday. I have been looking at the evo 3 16Gs from turbochargers.com. Has anyone had any experience with these? I am wanting something with a warranty and they seem to have the best price.
OK, stock vehicle with 140k miles on it. The turbo does not want to hit a full 10 psi with the factory vac setup. I pull the wastegate line and it boosts 15 psi MAX in all gears. There is oil in the vac lines and a film in the intake but nothing major. I checked the turbo for shaft play and it...
I had some issues like that on my last turbo car and it took a while to figure it out. It was a timing problem, I was one tooth off on my intake cam. The car would hit 14 psi at ilke 2200 rpm but just wouldnt go anywhere. It also backfired alot and smelled like it was flooding out. Building...
With compression as low as these motors have, how could you blow the motor with a stock turbo at 15 psi? There is enough injector to handle it and the knock sensor should have told the ECM to pull timing when needed. Is there something more i need to know about these motors before I modify mine?
I have found that on an AWD daily driver, the lightened flywheel can be a bit of a pain. When putting around town you probably arent gonna be shifting quickly thru the gears and you will lose alot of rpms between shifts. I would do what GTM said and try to find someone with a similar setup and...
well the turbo feels a little loose as far as shaft play goes, but no more so than a 17 year old turbo should feel. I disconnected the wastegate vac line completely so it shouldnt even open the wastegate. This was done to test if it was the turbo or factory boost controlle causing inconsistant...
Yes it is an intermittent problem. It would go back to normal, then back to low boost randomly...all while cruising at freeway speeds. Also wouldnt a boost leak cause a rough idle or other signs as well? I will verify everything is tight and pressure check the intake tract to make sure tho.
I just got back from a 1500 mile round trip over the weekend and noticed something odd on the way home. I was unable to boost past 7 psi. It stayed like this for about an hour, then when I accelerated to make it past someone it shot back up to around 10 like normal. It stayed working normally...
well I ended up running both wire and vac line thru the speedo cable grommet, its a tight fit running the wire on that side of the car because the trunk and gas door latch are in the way but I managed to make it without too much fuss.
I am a pretty big boy so reaching up behind the blower motor is painful and doesnt work so well. Yesterday I ended up with my head under the blower and my feet up on the headrest trying to get in there. I pushed that bigass screwdriver thru and couldnt even find it from the inside.
whats wrong with running the wire under the car? I have done it before with no problem, all you have to do is make sure its protected. My last 2 cars had a protective strap that ran along the length of the bottom of the car to protect the fuel pump wiring. Can you guesstimate a breakthru...
So far I have only found one place to even possibly run a piece of 4 gauge thru the firewall. there is a clump of wires going thru a large grommet directly behind the battery tray on the firewall. I have been trying to get thru to the inside of the cabin for over 2 hours now with no luck, it...
That would be me being used to GM style engine management, basically engines with MAP sensor instead of mass air. I often forget how flexible the factory computers on these cars can be as far as building maps for higher than stock boost levels.
I know that boost isnt everything, I am not new to the tuning scene, just to DSMs. I have been looking around and reading alot of posts about people with stock vehicles running 17+ psi and I was looking for some feedback on it. I am trying to learn as much about the ramifications of possible...
I had a set of these on my last FWD car and they are TERRIBLE tires. They were VERY noisy on the freeway, gripped great and had some wonderful wet weather performance....for the first 10k miles. After that they were about as sticky as an h rated geo metro tire but wore out as quick as a super...
Not all 6 pucks are harsh engaging clutches. I had a CS Stage 3 clutch with upgraded PP in my Impulse RS (AWD) and the only time you could even tell it was a puck was when in reverse...for normal daily driving it felt like a brand new factory clutch.
On my 90 Laser im planning to go bone stock at 14 psi for now. I had a friend call last night and told me he was dropping an AFC II off for me because he didnt need it anymore. I know people recommend around 14-15 psi on a stock setup but what im wondering is there any way I can up the boost to...
What is the recommended fluid to use in the 5 speed tranny, I have read a few different things about it so far. I am a bit worried because the guy I purchased it from told me he put 90w gear oil in the tranny and i have seen others say it uses 10w30 like my Isuzu trannys do. What do you guys...
Turned out that it was none of the above. I took her out for a road test. Figured beat on it a lil the first night and see if anything was gonna break. Some dumbass in a civic hatch was revvin all over me so I punched it in first, tach hit just about 6200 and *pop* all the dummy lights came on...
I do have a set of RC 550's sitting here, but I didnt know if I wanted to go thru all the hassle of an AFC test and tune. I gotta do all that on my drag car and im not sure if I want to bother on the daily driver. I will have to consider this carefully, but damn that boost is addictive! :laser:
I am not sure if this should go in the turbo tech part of the forum or not, but since I am a DSM noob I figure this is as good a place as any to put it.I recently purchased a 90 Laser RS iwth 135k mi on the clock. All major maintenance has been done but it seems the turbo might be going out...
this problem happens at idle as well and when I free rev the engine, im pretty sure that rules out the brakes. I will check the turbo for shaft play when I get home, it didnt sound like it was coming from the turbo but ya never know. If it is the turbo thats no biggie, my starion buddies have...
I just purchased a 1990 Laser RS and im just getting to know the car. One of my main concerns is that when I free rev or putt around town at low RPM I hear a whining/metallic grinding sound coming from the driver side of the motor. It reminds me of having a bad throwout bearing but the grind...
