No matter how stock the car is, it should be able to rev to redline with no problems. The issue with 1g´s is their very sensitive knock sensor that can pickup any kind of noise + the agressive timing they came with from factory. This cars have almost 20 years, and even though you may have done...

Sounds like knock, you might be running lean somehow, maybe if you modded the maf. 1g´s run pretty lean, their timing is very agressive from the factory. Check your timing and make sure is dead on (ignition timing), also check that the plugs are gapped to factory spec .028. Get a logger as soon...
