Timing belt slipped (oil on tbelt). I did hear some tapping when the engine was running, so I suppose valves were touching pistons (is there anything else that sounds like that?). But the pistons look good to me, maybe slightly scuffed on the intake side. When I poor some liquid into the intak...
If a bad TPS/throttle position sensor; if you accelerate really gradually it works alright, but if you floor it the car is really slow. THat's what mine did. With a bad IPS, usually it effects the idle too.
Let's see those odometers and who has the most miles on their DSM?Mine has 207K miles on the chassis! Mostly Seattle commuting and highway combined :)I am so missing driving this old car!
I gave it a feel; no play with the input or the output. The output looks like new I think, the input I took another pic it really needs replaced! Rusty and sharp pointy :O
I saw a video of how to inspect the tcase for play, and that's helpful. I see quite a bit of rust on this input shaft. The transfer case has had the recall done in the past (I think), it has about 60K since then (or possibly more). I don't know the total miles on this tcase I think it came from...
Well for me at age 49 it was not easy to get torque while I was underneath the vehicle (I only have the front on jack stands currently). So, I used a PVC pipe as a breaker bar extension on my socket ratchet wrench. That made it super easy. The head is off my car and so is the intake manifold...
I am gonna pull this block out someday hopefully within the next week or 2. But once I get the block out of the car, how do I take the pistons and crank out, how do inspect it all and does anyone want to also tell me who sells bearings and rings for cheap I am looking for stock/oem equivalents...
I found out here in Washington State that the car has to be 30 years old so I still have a few more years to go. I think it used to be 25 but they pushed it out further to snub the import owners :) And it's only supposed to be for show cars basically.
So I have seen people talking about getting classic car tabs on their DSM's. Sounds nice but I also noticed it says not to use the car lfor normal transportation, it's supposed to be for like show cars only.Anyone using those plates and driving the car frequently without the cops giving them a...
Alright; for some reason I can only find a short stubby ratcheting wrench so that is probably my problem, it's too short to get leverage.I will be surprised if I can break it with a socket, and a regular ratchet wrench since I had to use a breaker bar on the others. But yeah I will hunt down...
I got 4 of the 5 bolts out; I just don't seem to have the right wrench to get to the last bolt, the one that is on top and in the rear? I can find it, I just can't get any leverage.Which tool(s) should I be using?
My block needs rings, bearings, seals. The head is good and already pulled along with all the other stuff, only think left on the block is the oil cooler and the transmission is bolted to it naturally. So I want to pull the block and transmission together. What is the best walk thru or vfaq for...
Was it easy to sell your car? Did you sell high medium or low? I'm asking because I want to sell my DSM also. But first I have to pull the motor! And fix....question is would it be worth it or should I part it out. Seems like I should be able to get $2k-3k for it running but only about 1K in...
Hey I was thinking of finally selling my 1G; owned it since 2003. I was curious what the market is like. Are people able to get the normal price for their cars, are they selling relatively quickly, or is it taking longer than normal and having to drop the price? Thanks much for any feedback.
Thanks everyone for your ideas. I don't see a whole lot of advice for cleaning the material off of aluminum. I did use some oven cleaner, hopefully it didn't weaken the head material. Still was dirty after that. I got the plastic scraper, but they didn't have gasket cleaner in a aerosol can at...
Head came off but is still good, not wanting to take it to the shop. I want to clean the old gasket material off the bottom of the head. What should I use?
Yeah, here's the story; I had a rebuilt head put on the engine. Well I didn't do the bottom end, and a seal leaked oil all over the timing belt. I think that was in the block, like the crankshaft seal or some other seal. The block has a lot of miles (it was rebuilt before), I don't know exactly...
Hey; what about dropping the transmission from down below first, then tak the engine out from above? Would that make it easier? BTW, the head is off the engine, so it's just the engine block basically.
Hey I just saw this video on how to do the valves yourself. In the case of your head is in good shape, but you just have a some leaking valves, here is how to do it!The guy in the video has a head the same as ours.
HOW TO DO A VALVE JOB! Bent Valves, Broken Timing Belt, No Machine Shop!
I heard that it depends on which valves; that the intake only often you can just replace the valves, but with exhaust valves those you have to replace the guides also.
Alright this head had been rebuilt and then there was an oil leak in my bottom end that got on the timing belt, bent intake valves only is what it looks like (haven't pulled the valves yet).So I am wondering where I can get an OEM quality valve at a low price, just wanting to sap the valves...
Alright; thanks everyone...I noticed the transmission also has a 199MM bolt/plug on top of the transmission, what is that bolt for then. the 19MM on top?
Wow I was just going to drain my transmission, which uses a 19 MM wrench for the fill bolt, and a 17mm drain bolt. I got the drain bolt off, and not a drop came out! Strange thing is my transmission was working fine when I last drove the car. Car's been sitting about 4 years. There is a film of...
Well, I don't know if this is sabotage or if it came off inside the engine? A small bolt about 1/3 inch long, says M 8.8 on the bolt head. The bolt was stuck to the end of my magnetic drain plug when I drained the oil. I guess it's points for magnetic drain plugs in this case, it worked :)Does...
I want to pull the engine and transmission together. My A/C worked before, so I want to still use the A/C when en I drop the motor into the car.Should I disconnect the A/C lines or just take the compressor off and use a coat hanger to hang it in the engine bay? Will it leak freon if I...
Had a timing belt incident a while back, car been sitting forever since then. I finally pulled the head. The car had either no compression, or very little (it's been so long I forget). Before I pulled the head, when the engine was running, I heard a sound that sounded like the pistons hitting...
Hey I am changing my mind though I think I shold leave the transmission in the car because the transmission is good I just want to put a clutch in. I am outdoors gravel driveway cars parked right next to me, people coming and going. So should I just pull the engine and leave the transmission in...
Which EVO 3 turbos are people buying lately how much you spending where you buying them? And 14b/16g etc? What is the general in that size what's people been buying?
Yeah I've done the head a couple of times, did my own timing belt jobs about 3 times all successfully without any problems afterwards.I've just never jacked it up except for like to pull a single wheel at a time.So what happened is the engine I have now it leaked a seal in the block, it...
I want to swap out a long block, and also put in a new clutch. I need to know where to jack it up and where to put the jack stands, and also I want to know, should I pull the engine and transmission at once or seperately?
I'm going to be rebuilding or swapping out my engine.I also need a clutch, the transmission itself is fine.Should I pull the transmission with the engine, pull it seperatly, or leave it in?I've never replaced a clutch so i wan't sure if i had to pull the tranny to do that.I do...
That price sounds double what i would anticipate, or at least $2,000 too musch, even paying $1,000 to swap it.Damn well better be a strong motor at that price!Sounds totally normal on the metal paste though.
I'm not assumng anything, that's just what I anticipate is going to happen. I won't know until I pull the engine and measure the specs. The reason i have narrowed it down to oil rings as because I've done replaced everything else that can cause it...so that is the last thing on the list of what...
OK, here's the deal; Oil leaked on timing belt, valve hit pistons. Car was burning oil on boost long b4 that and narrowed it down to oil rings. So what it looks like I need to do, based on my budget, I want to pull the engine, it needs a head, rings and bearings and my clutch has 80K on it so i...
Well the timing belt got oil all over it so I wonder how risky it would be. I mean I eventually pulled the belt and cleaned it dry but it got oil soaked, I believe it all happened in one day, and I think I yanked the belt about a week or so after it happened so it's pretty soaked in there.i...
Hey I got a drill and the bit to put a 14MM socket on it to turn over the oil pump, to find the leak source with all timing covers removed of course.Problem is, I turn it over with the drill, but no oil is leaking. How long should I have to spin the oil pump with the drill before it makes...
